Dark Souls 2: How To Kill Phantoms (Crown of the Sunken King)

Updated on July 23, 2014

Dark Souls 2 Phantoms

There are several new enemies, bosses, items, and secrets to discover in the "Crown of the Sunken King" DLC for Dark Souls 2. Crown of the Sunken King DLC became available on July 22, 2014. It is the first of three downloadable content for Dark Souls 2. Originally, there was no planned additional content for the game, but now apparently, due to the games success most likely, two more DLC packs will eventually be released.

Many treacherous enemies await you in the Crown of the Sunken King DLC. Many of the enemies are positioned in a way that can trap you in a corner.

In the Dragon's Sanctum, which is the second area of the Crown of the Sunken King DLC, you will encounter a new enemy type. These new enemy types cannot be defeated conventionally. They are gray phantoms that are translucent. You will be able to see them, but their form is not completely solid. They are not easily dispatched in their incorporeal (ghostly non-physical) form. Their form is reminiscent of the gray player character phantoms that are seen often during online play or when near a blood stain.

Most of your attacks will be mostly futile against the phantoms when they are in their translucent form. Attacks will merely go through them with very minimal damage. You have to solidify their form to destroy these aggressive & dangerous creatures.

How To Kill Phantoms in Crown of the Sunken King

There are a total of nine phantoms within the Dragons Sanctum. Most of them are scattered around the snake pit. However, two of them are in the higher areas of the fortress, guarding the raised pedestals with armor on top.

To make the phantoms vulnerable to damage, players must find out where the enchanted suits of armor are located. These enchanted suits of armor must be destroyed so the player can damage the phantoms. Each suit is linked to a specific phantom. You can identify the enchanted armor by looking for a red aura that is lit above the armor.

The enchanted armor in the Dark Souls 2 Crown of the Sunken King can be found by crossing the short bridge that is above the pit. This takes you to a subterranean chamber where the armor is scattered throughout the area. Find and destroy all the armor that has red aura above it. Only a single attack is needed to destroy the armor.

Be aware, however, once you destroy an enchanted armor, the phantom that was linked to that armor will now have access to a crossbow. The phantom will attack using two types of attacks that come from the crossbow. They will either fire dark magic or will shoot triple-fire bolts at you.

Note that it is much more difficult to take on multiple phantoms at once. It's best if you lure one of them out and dispatch each of them when they are isolated. This will make killing the phantoms in Dark Souls 2 Crown of the Sunken DLC much easier.
