Updated on December 14, 2017

Poppy is a proofreader and Dragon Age fan. She lives in Tokyo with her husband and likes to spend time reading and playing video games.

We've all done it—despite a character from a cartoon or video game being, technically, a bunch of well-placed pixels, we've still sometimes said "oooh, he/she's lovely. Shame they're not real." Here's a list of hot male characters from video games who have their own fan clubs and are popular choices for cosplay. Got any more suggestions? Comment below.

12. Cloud Strife (Final Fantasy VII)

English voice actor: Steve Burton (movie)
Game's year of release: 1997
Company: Square Enix

Final Fantasy VII is still the most famous and popular Final Fantasy game and it really put the franchise on the map. A movie was even made based on the game, named Advent Children, where Cloud was revealed in all his HD glory.

Cloud is an extremely popular character for women players and watchers all over the world—from his destructive sword to his Tokyo-style hair, he's everything you'd want in a hero.

11. Nier (Nier Gestalt)

English voice actor: Jamieson Price
Game's year of release: 2010
Company: Cavia and Square Enix

Nier is the main protagonist of the vastly underrated video game of the same name. I'm a sucker for nice guys, and Nier's fierce love for his sick daughter, loyalty and kindness matches his heroic physique and awesome strength. Definitely one for the list.

Nier Replicant is a game that's identical to Nier Gestalt, but the main character is Yonah's brother, not her father, and he's younger and slimmer than in Nier Gestalt.

10. Goro Majima (Yakuza 0)

Voice actor: Hidenari Ugaki
Year of game's release: 2015
Company: SEGA

Yakuza 0 is the prequel to the more recent Yakuza games and was released on Playstation 4 in 2015. Majima is one of the two playable characters in Yakuza 0 and is a member of the Japanese mafia from Osaka.

He's the owner of a nightclub and a powerful fighter.I fell in love with him when he was sent to assassinate a young woman, but took pity on her when he heard her story. The girl is blind, and he helps protect her for most of the game. His sweetness and patience with her (although he pretends to be grumpy) is adorable. Oh, and he also fights other yakuza members to protect her. *Dreamy sigh*.

9. Geralt of Rivia (The Witcher III: Wild Hunt)

English voice actor: Doug Cockle
Game's year of release: 2015
Company: CD Projekt RED / Bandai Namco Entertainment

The Witcher III: Wild Hunt is one of the most celebrated video games of our generation. The main character is strong, sexy, and his main profession is killing monsters. What more could we ask for?

8. Link (The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess)

English voice actor: N/A
Game's year of release: 2006
Company: Nintendo

Link is a silent hero who's been around to save Princess Zelda since the release of the first Legend of Zelda 2D game in the '90s. He's even made guest appearances in fighting games such as the Soul Calibur and Super Smash Brothers series.

With his sword, shield, arrows, and unquenchable thirst for justice, he's a brave and handsome hero we all know and love.

7. Kratos (God of War Series)

English voice actor: Terrence C. Carson
Game's year of release: 2005
Company: Sony Computer Entertainment

Kratos is a powerful Spartan wielding huge swords chained to his arms. He fights Greek mythological beasts, climbs a titan for three days without rest and battles gods —he's about as manly as one can get. On top of that, he's gorgeous if you're into the masculine, grumpy type. As well as being a great game series, you also get to control this hunk of muscle.

6. Solid Snake (Metal Gear Solid Series)

English voice actor: David Hayter
Game's year of release: 1998
Company: Konami Computer Entertainment

Another incredibly popular game series is Metal Gear, with the famous Solid Snake as its protagonist. He's a spy, he's a killer, he wants to save the world - what more could you want? Not to mention that tight suit and headband. He's also been named one of the manliest video game characters ever.

5. Letho (The Witcher II: Assassins of Kings)

English voice actor: Mark Lewis Jones
Game's year of release: 2011
Company: CD Projekt RED

Letho, also known as Kingslayer, is the villain assassin and main antagonist in the Polish video game The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. He's muscular, he's mean, he kills mercilessly. And he also happens to be hot. Like Solid Snake, he also appeared in toughest video game characters.

4. Ezio Auditore da Firenze (Assassin's Creed 2)

English voice actor: Roger Craig Smith
Year of game's release: 2009
Company: Ubisoft

There's nothing quite like a trained killer with assassin heritage and a thirst for vengeance. Set in the 15th century, Assassin's Creed 2 tells the story of an Italian nobleman who trains as an assassin from age 17, and embarks on a quest to uncover the truth about the Templar Order. Ezio is sexy, dresses well, and the main protagonist of AC2. One for the list for sure.

3. Commander Cullen (Dragon Age: Inquisition)

English voice actor: Jonny Rees
Game's year of release: 2014
Company: Bioware/Electronic Arts

Cullen Rutherford is a (non-playable) part of your character's team and commander of your Inquisition's army. An ex-templar, strong yet shy, he's a charming addition to your force.

He is also possible for your playable character to romance, which made him even cuter.

2. Jacob Taylor (Mass Effect 2)

Voice actor: Adam Lazarre-White
Game's year of release: 2010
Company: Bioware and Electronic Arts

For number 2 we have Jacob Taylor from Mass Effect 2. Who's idea was it to have a shirtless scene? Whoever it was, female players from all over were playing with a big grin on their faces. Jacob is fine!

1. Alistair (Dragon Age Origins)

English voice actor: Steve Valentine
Game's year of release: 2009
Company: Electronic Arts

Alistair is incredibly popular not only because of his knighthood, but his personality too—he's charming, witty, kind-hearted and just too cute for words. Best of all, you can woo him in the game with gifts and correct dialogue choices.

Alistair appears as a companion very close to the beginning of the game. As you get to know him better, you can find out more about his past—including a secret that makes him all the more attractive. Alistair wins the #1 spot on this list of the hottest male video game character.

Do you agree with this list? Who would you rate as number 1?

Even though they're very similar, I think Venom Snake is hotter than Solid. His rugged face and body covered in scars is really attractive, plus I'm a sucker for guys with pony tails~
