How to Earn Money in Grand Theft Auto 5 (GTA V)

Updated on February 9, 2019

Unlike previous games in the series, earning money in Grand Theft Auto 5 is definitely not as easy. There are many ways to spend your hard earned cash in GTA 5. Some properties in the game cost an insane amount to purchase, such as the elusive Golf Course, which will cost you 15 million (Yes, $150,000,000) in GTA cash! As a comparison, the cheapest property, the Hen House requires a handsome sum of $80,000. This comprehensive money making guide guides you on how to earn money in the single player mode of Grand Theft Auto V, without any cheating involved! I will probably touch on GTA Online in a separate article as the mechanics are totally different.

Spoilers Ahead!

Like the many ways to spend your dough in GTA V, there are also different ways to earn them - robberies, completing missions, heists (not as profitable as you may think and I wish there was a way you can have customized heists, hopefully in the next GTA game, GTA 6) and the LCN stock market (what this article is mainly about). This article contains huge amount of spoilers, so you can stop reading right now if you do not want parts of the story to be spoilt.

The Stock Assassin

The best way to obtain large amounts of money in GTA V is through investments at the correct time. The key to becoming a billionare in Grand Theft Auto 5 are the assassination missions, offered by Lester Crest to Franklin throughout the game. The idea is this: assassinating the key personnel of one company will increase the stock value of its competitor. These missions should be done as late as possible into the game to maximize the effect.

First Investment - Betta Pharmaceuticals

The first mission is the "The Hotel Assassination" mission, where you are tasked to kill Brett Lowry. Before starting this mission, invest all your money into Betta Pharmaceuticals. Sell after it caps on the market, for a 50% to 80% profit.

If you are wondering if replaying the mission allows you to repeat this trick over and over again, the answer is no. You can only perform it once and this is the same for all the assassination missions. However, do note you can use and switch between the 3 characters to buy/sell the stocks.

Second Investment - AUG Augury Insurance

After the previous "Hotel Assassination", invest your money into AUG Augury Insurance. Reminder: You can do this for all 3 characters. This stock will rise incredibly up to a 100% ROI towards the end of the last heist, "The Big Score". According to some players, it appears that destroying vehicles in Los Santos will cause the share price to increase as well. Afterall, they a provider of automobile insurance.

Third Investment - Debonair Cigarettes

Before undertaking and completing the second mission, The "Redwood Cigarette Assassination", invest all you have in Debonair Cigarettes (its competitor in GTA tobacco business), again for all 3 main characters. You can sell after it reaches a 70-90% increase in stock value.

Fourth Investment - Redwood Cigarettes

After selling your Debonair shares, it's time to invest and buy Redwood shares as soon as you can while the price is still low due to the assassination. Redwood Cigarettes should see a re-bounce in value in just a few in-game days. You can effectively profit twice from a single assassination.

Fifth Investment - Fruit

Invest your money in Fruit (maker of the Fruit phone in game) before embarking on the "Vice Assassination" mission. After the mission, the stock value of its competitor Facade (FAC) will fall due to the death of its product director which you assassinated. Fruit's stock value should see an increase about 25 to 50% in a few days and you can then sell it. On a quick note, you can probably quickly invest in Facade while its down and sell it when it returns back to normal again.

Sixth Investment - Vapid

After (Note: After) the "Bus Assassination" mission is completed entirely, invest your money into Vapid, an automotive company based on Ford Motor. The concept is the same, buy the Vapid stocks when they fall after the death of their key personnel and sell them again when they re-bounce back to normal after a few in-game days.

Seventh Investment - Gold Coast

Invest heavily into Gold Coast before the "Construction Assassination" mission, where you have to kill Enzo Bonelli, a mob boss in the construction business. After completing the mission, the stock value of Gold Coast will increase. Sell it when it reaches about 50%-80% increase (mine topped at 80%).

Eighth Investment - Tinkle

Send a hitchhiker to the Airport in this random event. This investment is not related to any of the assassination missions given by Franklin. Therefore, you can perform this "escort" mission with any of the 3 main characters.

The hitchiker can be found on the the west coast (Great Ocean Highway) in Banham Canyon on Ineseno Road, right before Chumah. Before completing his escort mission, invest into Tinkle. After he makes it to the airport on time, he will provide you with a stock tip. Immediately invest in it (if you have not done so) and the stock will start to rise to around 33%.

Note: Other hitchhikers do not give you any stock tips as rewards.

I have been playing GTA V for a while and I really like it. I waited until the end of the game to finish the assassination missions. I did thins because I got like 33 million from the last mission and I could double that money with just one of the assassination missions. Thanks for the info.
