Kshitiz has been gaming for more than 15 years. He owns a PS4 and enjoys playing console exclusives from time to time.
I have been gaming since I was eight- or nine-years-old. The gaming market has changed, but one thing that hasn't is the importance of picking the right game.
Based on my experience and passion for gaming, I will help you weed out the unwanted and boring games that will collect dust on your shelf. This is the ultimate guide for buying the best PS4 games under $20. So let's get started.
9 Best PS4 Games Under $20
- God of War
- Shadow of the Tomb Raider
- Horizon Zero Dawn
- Tekken 7
- Days Gone
- Monster Hunter: World
- Uncharted 4: A Thief's End
- Just Cause 4
1. God of War
God of War is a personal favorite of mine, and one of the main reasons why I bought a PS4. The trailer was enough to convince me that this was going to be a game-changer. I bought it for $45, but you can get it for under $20. Even though the game is a lot cheaper now, I don't regret buying it when I did.
Did I mention that it won Game of the Year? Even though it went against other great AAA games such as Red Dead Redemption 2. I already knew that it was going to win because this game was everything that it promised to be and more.
Features include a creative story, exciting combat, amazing graphics, beautiful music, and complex relationships that will keep you engaged for several hours.
After finishing the game, you can keep playing and exploring the beautiful open world. There are plenty of quests and areas that you can explore after finishing the main storyline.
There are 10 Valkyries that you can try to defeat, but I don't think it is that much fun, to be honest. The Valkyries are really hard to defeat, and it just keeps getting harder with every kill. I could only defeat three or four before I gave up and decided to let the remaining Valkyries live.
Santa Monica Studios have done a fabulous job with this game. I insist that you add this game to your collection if you are a PS4 owner.
My Rating: 10/10
2. Shadow of the Tomb Raider
Shadow of the Tomb Raider may not fully satisfy those who haven't been a fan of the Tomb Raider games. It is a decent game that you can only really appreciate if you are already a fan of the series.
This game is brutal, stealthy, and features massive battles with big explosions. You will play as Lara Croft, the series' protagonist, who is trying to save the world from a Maya apocalypse. It reminds me of the Uncharted games, which is not a bad thing.
This PS4 game has a lot of things going for it, but the story is lacking. It starts off well but ends up being a little boring after a while. If you are the type of player who doesn't care about the story that much, then you can consider this one.
The game has tons of side quests and areas to explore. The side quests reward you well, so it is worth doing them. Like all new modern adventure games, you have to upgrade your weapons and equipment to progress smoothly.
They have changed the approach to the gameplay a little bit with this entry—now the focus is on exploration instead of combat. This could be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on who you ask. Personally, I prefer games that focus on combat. But I appreciate the fact that they took a risk and tried to do something different.
In short, this is a good game that was almost great. However, you can still have a lot of fun, especially if you are familiar with the franchise.
My Rating: 8/10
3. Horizon Zero Dawn
Horizon Zero Dawn is a PS4 game set in a future where humanity has almost perished. The remaining humans live among various animal-like machines. And they aren't exactly friendly.
I got this one for free with my PS4, so it was the first game I played on it. It is truly beautiful—with a huge open-world showcasing various terrains and areas. You can explore the snowy mountains, the grassy plains, and the messy jungles. The scenery changes rapidly as you move on the map—which is huge, even by modern standards. There are beautiful and smooth transitions as well. The transition from day to night feels real, and night looks a lot more beautiful than day.
Another factor that really stands out in this game is the protagonist. I have never been a fan of female video game characters, but Aloy is amazing. They have done a great job with the story, and it is worth watching all of the cutscenes to experience the amazing story.
You will have plenty of things to do even after finishing the game like side quests, exploration, finding vantage points, etc. Even though I have had this game for three years, I still play it sometimes because of how beautiful it is. It is hard to imagine that this game was launched in 2017 with the graphics that it has.
This game has a raw feel, but it also has a modern flavor. You can think of it like a cup of coffee that has the right amount of coffee and sugar—it guides you into a world where survival is hard and getting accepted is even harder.
My Rating: 9/10
4. Tekken 7
Tekken 7 is a game for the old-school fighting game lovers. I have been playing Tekken since Tekken 3. Tekken 3 was an iconic game, and this one is also close to being iconic.
As is the case in any game of this series, there are plenty of characters to choose from. You can play online, which will help you avoid getting bored quickly. Online gameplay is really fun because you get to see the progress that you are making against human players. It is competitive and quite balanced.
If they had worked on the story and made sure that certain characters weren't overpowered, then it could have been a lot better. Still, this game will be loved by the Tekken series fans, as well as the newer players who just want to play a fighting game.
My advice for you is that if you are a Tekken fan, then this PS4 game is something that you need to get right now. You will not regret it at all.
If you care about story or don't like DLCs, then maybe this game is not for you. If you are a newer player, you can pick this game or some other fighting game like Dragonball Z: Kakarot, depending on your preference.
My Rating: 8/10
5. Days Gone
Days Gone is an open world action-adventure that will satisfy those who love adventure-horror games like The Last of Us. This is another PlayStation exclusive like Horizon Zero Dawn.
Like Horizon Zero Dawn, it has a post-apocalyptic theme, but this one is about zombie-like creatures (they aren't exactly zombies or vampires) and modern weapons while Horizon offers machines and futuristic bows and arrows. The point I am trying to make is that you can pick one of these two games if you are low on cash because they are similar. You should pick Days Gone in my opinion because I like it more.
Like all the other PS4 exclusive games, it has great graphics, solid mechanics, a variety of enemies, and plenty of missions. It has a lot of replayability—you can do a ton of stuff even after the main storyline is finished.
My Rating: 9/10
6. Monster Hunter: World
Monster Hunter: World is not just a game about hunting monsters, but it is a game about hunting big and hard to kill monsters. It will require you to grind to get the upper hand on the stronger monsters, but it will be worth it.
You can't just hope to jump in and start slaying monsters left, right, and center. You will need to learn the game and adapt to the mechanics before putting up a good fight against the monsters.
There are plenty of monsters to hunt just like any other Monster Hunter game. The game features a lot of different environments so that you don't get bored of hunting in similar environments.
Don't forget the fact that this game is all about grinding and getting better gear and upgrades to slay more monsters and doing it again and again. So this game is surely not for everyone. If you are just a casual player, this game could be too much for you. If you are someone who loves to grind and doesn't mind getting killed more than once or twice, this game can impress you.
There are plenty of weapons in the game with different playstyles that you can upgrade. The bigger weapons are your best bet because they inflict more damage, but you can choose the weapon that best fits your playstyle. You will enjoy killing monsters just to make new weapons and armor for your character.
They have got the option to play online with other players, but it is not great if we are being honest. You don't have as much freedom as you would like to have when it comes to online gameplay.
In the end, this PS4 game is worth buying mainly because it allows you to spend a lot of time playing without getting bored. This is rare when it comes to modern games that you will rarely play after finishing the main story. I just wish that they had worked on the online gameplay to make it even better.
My Rating: 8/10
7. Uncharted 4: A Thief's End
Uncharted 4: A Thief's End doesn't deserve to be so lower in this article because it is a great game. I still remember playing Uncharted 2 on PS3, and it was the best action game that I played at that time. The gameplay was smooth, and it featured a decent amount of puzzles and epic action sequences where I was always outnumbered but never outgunned. Uncharted 4 does what the other Uncharted games do and that delivers awesome action with a decent story.
If you have played the earlier Uncharted games, you will feel right at home with this one. However, this is a different game that offers you something that the other games don't and that is a better story with proper character building. I am not saying that the other Uncharted games didn't have character building, but it was not as detailed.
I am not going to waste a lot of time on the graphics because you expect them to be great when it is an Uncharted game, and they are indeed great. Just check out the trailer above.
The fourth entry has added the ability to use a rope to swing from place to place. In my opinion, it is an awesome addition to a game that relies a lot on parkour. You can sneak around and take enemies down stealthily. I wonder what it would be like to try finishing the entire game stealthily. Maybe it wouldn't be a good idea, because this is an action game that is meant to be fast-paced and loud.
This is a lengthy game with long cut-scenes, which may not be enjoyable for everyone. They even have a multiplayer mode in this one, which seems crazy to me. You can enjoy the multiplayer, but don't buy the game for the multiplayer.
In short, you should get this game if you are an action game lover.
My Rating: 10/10
Bloodborne is an acquired taste that is not for those who get irritated quickly. The main selling point of this game is the focus on gameplay. If you love to grind for hours trying to fight those bosses that just refuse to die, this game is for you. In short, you will either love it or hate it so much that you will never play it again.
The combat in this game is not that hard when compared to similar games. The main issue is the lack of checkpoints, which make it difficult to save the game and progress smoothly. If you die, you have to start all over again, which could be very frustrating for the vast majority.
I bet that this is one of the few games that will make you feel like you have achieved something big after beating a boss or just getting over an area where you kept dying for hours.
If you will compare it to some of the recent games, it doesn't look that good. The game looks a lot like Dark Souls, and presents some scary looking bosses. The design of some of the bosses is great and well-thought-out, while others are just confusing. They have deliberately made the designs mysterious and horrifying.
You will actually feel hopeless and lost while playing but that makes the experience even more rewarding when you eventually win. I really like the music of this game because it builds the tension and adds to the overall experience.
I don't think that you should consider this game if you just play casually and want to have a fun experience. If you are a hardcore gamer, who just wants to grind, then this game is for you.
My Rating: 7/10
9. Just Cause 4
Just Cause 4 gives you the chance to be a badass just like Just Cause 3. I know that some people like Just Cause 3 more than this one, but this one has better graphics and gives you more options. This game is meant to make you feel invincible and grant you mobility, unlike any other game that you have ever played.
As far as the story is concerned—you can say that there is one, but it is not something that will make you excited or enhance your overall experience. Honestly, the Just Cause series is not known for the story. It is known for blowing stuff up and dealing with a lot of bad guys in all sorts of ways. You can use grapple tethers to make people fly in the air, use a helicopter to wreak havoc, shoot stuff while gliding, or maybe just shoot people while running.
It will get repetitive, and you may feel bored. This game doesn't offer something entirely new, so it might not suit that many people. It is certainly a new experience for those who haven't played the games from this series yet, but even they may feel bored before the game is finished.
I don't think I can give you advice as to whether you should pick this PS4 game or not. It depends on what you like. If you want a crazy game where you can take on armies on your own by using a wide variety of tools, this may be for you. If you want a game that requires finesse and tactics, you can get The Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
My Rating: 7/10
Which PS4 Game Should You Buy?
With so many options to choose from, it is not easy to only pick one. I rarely play on my PlayStation, and yet I have a collection of eight games. If a PC gamer like me can have such a collection, it wouldn't be surprising to see a collection of more than 15 games for a PS4 aficionado.
In my opinion, God of War is the game to buy if you are going to choose one.
I have tried my hardest to include the best PS4 games under $20 at the time of writing this article. However, there can't be a perfect list of the best games because the selection of the best games is subjective. I just hope that you find at least one game that you like in my article.
If you have any suggestions, feel free to drop them in the comments. I will update this article if I really like your suggestion. Thank you for reading.
