6 Games Like Starcraft/Starcraft 2
This game is only available on the iPad or smart phones. It is like a Starcraft clone. You get to choose 3 races; a human race, an alien race and robots. Sounds like Starcraft isn't it? One of the things you have to get used to in this game is tapping the screen and creating boxes to control more than one unit.
Since this is a real time strategy game, you will have to be quite nimble with your hands. If you are slow, then chances are you will have a hard time controlling your troops. The campaign features gameplay and stories of all three races. You also get to do PvP against other players as well. If you are looking for an RTS game on your android or iPhone, this is the game that you will want to get your hands on.
War Hammer II: Dawn of War
This is quite a unique game and quite refreshing to play. It is a real time strategy and role playing game combined. I would say it is a Diablo plus Starcraft hybrid. You get to choose to control 4 different armies. They are Space Marines, Orks, Eldar, and Tyranids.
You can choose to play single player or co-op, which is nice. You get to play as squads and below are the ones that you get to choose:
Force Commander: The silent protagonist
Tarkus: Veteran of countless battles
Avitus: Heavy weapons specialist
Thaddeus: Close range combat expert
Cyrus: Ghost like and stealthy
Davian Thule: A cybernetic combat walker
There isn't any base building, as the campaign mission focuses on you deploying certain squads for strategic battles. However, you get to control armies and equip your character with weapons to aid you in the campaign.
Age of Empires 2: Age of Kings
While there are no guns involved in this real time strategy game, this game like Starcraft is widely popular in terms of developing strategy and defeating your opponents.
You get to choose many different civilizations to play. Each civilization starts off at the Dark Age, and advance their way to Imperial Age for better technology. You will have to gather resources to build buildings and create a huge army of a different variety to conquer your foes. There are also different series other than Age of Empires 2. There is the original Age of Empires, an online version and also Age of Empires 3. It all comes down to preference here. I enjoyed 2 the most, therefore I chose it. You are more than welcome to try out the other ones.
Company of Heroes
We are moving on to army like games. It has more resemblance to tactical battlefields like marines in Starcraft. At least in this game the soldiers aren't that easily slaughtered. There isn't really a set place to gather resources in this game. You move around and capture buildings to gather resources. Just like Starcraft, you will have to be good at micro managing your troops. Nimble hands are required. Units can occupy the buildings and convert it to barracks, allowing you to build certain units.
If you are a big fan of history like the World War II, then this game is definitely going to excite you. You actually get to experience the gameplay in that era, making it quite interesting.
World in Conflict
Developed by a Swedish company, this is a real time strategy game that does not have resource gathering or base building. They focus on "shopping" for units that is pre-determined by reinforcement points.
It does offer a lot of strategic gameplay like Starcraft though. While you do not require as much micro management in this game, you still have to carefully plan your attack as you have to pay attention to your army that is scattered around. There are four major roles you get to choose when you start. They are Infantry, Air, Armor and Support. You can choose mixed roles, but it is more expensive.
Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3
This is also similar to the 2 games mentioned above in terms of plot. In this one, you get to gather resources and build your base though. You are taken back to World War II, where the Soviet leadership goes back in time to kill Albert Einstein and prevent his assistance to the allies, making the Soviet Union a powerhouse. The cool thing about this game is that the campaign is co-op, where you have an ally to play with you. That is quite refreshing versus the traditional solo gameplay.
Games Like Starcraft Conclusion
There you have it. Try them out while waiting for the Starcraft 2 last expansion. They are all fun in their own way.
