Legend Tokens & Character Unlock Guide

What are Legend Tokens?

Legend Tokens are a standard, non-premium currency in Apex Legends. They cannot be purchased, only earned by playing the game. You can view your balance in the top right corner of the main screen when not in a match. It's signified by a small icon surrounded by a red border, in-between your Apex Coin balance and your crafting metals balance.

Spending Legend Tokens: Unlocking Legends

Currently the primary use of Legend Tokens for any typical person is to purchase unlock-able characters, or legends, to play in addition to the 6 you have unlocked by default. Currently, there are 2 unlock-able Legends though rumors are flying of a 3rd coming soon.

  • Caustic for 12,000 Legend Tokens
Caustic features abilities to poison enemies with toxic gas, dealing damage and obscuring vision.
  • Mirage for 12,000 Legend Tokens
Mirage features the ability to create clones of himself to distract, confuse, and "bamboozle" enemies.
  • Octane, a character likely coming in March 2019, will also likely cost Legend Tokens as the 3rd unlock-able character.

(While you cannot purchase Legend Tokens, these Legends can also be purchased for 750 Apex Coins, about $7.50 USD)

Mirage takes 12,000 Legend Tokens or 750 Apex Coins to unlock. It's unclear if this is the price you should expect newly introduced Legends to cost, but we'll find out soon!

Spending Legend Tokens: Skins in the Store

You can also use these tokens to purchase re-colors of skins you already own in a rotating weekly area of the shop.

When you go to the store tab, by default you will be in the featured section. You will see several cosmetic items (likely Legendaries) you can purchase for Apex Coins. To the right of them, you will find some re-colored versions that you can purchase for Legend Tokens. These will often be between 6,500 and 10,500 tokens though the exact details of all prices and items they sell are currently unclear. These will rotate roughly once a week, but items in the store are not necessarily on the same schedule. These skins are often just different colors, not necessarily better in any other way, though arguable some of the colors may be more desirable. Refer to my screenshot below comparing 2 versions. These skins are likely just a place to sink Legend Tokens if you've already purchased all the characters and have nothing else to spend your tokens on.

How Do You Get Legend Tokens?

Legend Tokens are one of the rewards for leveling up, the other one being Apex Packs containing random cosmetic items. However, unlike Apex Packs, after you reach the max level of 100, you will still earn Legend Tokens periodically as a reward. You effectively still level up as you normally would, but at this point your level count simply doesn't increase.

  • You receive 600 Legend Tokens every time you level, but do not receive Legend Tokens for your first 3 levels.
  • You earn enough to unlock 1 character at level 23, and the 2nd at level 43

For more complete information on leveling up, check out my guide.

It's unclear if more methods for earnings Legend Tokens will be introduced however without many things to spend them on, we can expect to not see many changes. The upcoming battle pass with season 1 may bring changes, but we'll have to wait and see.

Final Thoughts

Legend Tokens do very little for the game other than hold some content back for players to earn over time while they play with the default set of Legends. The re-colored skins are neat, but it's unlikely to be very meaningful. It's mostly just something to throw tokens towards if you've bought Legends or are a high enough level to have tokens burning a hole in your pocket.

Overall, I hope to see more being done with Legend Tokens, and it may be worth not throwing some away on re-colored skins should something new be introduced.
