The Hell's Retriever on Blood of the Dead

There are numerous secrets on Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Blood of the Dead Zombies. Players are uncovering the secrets by accident or through careful search. The Hell's Retriever is a tomahawk weapon that can be thrown at zombies. It was originally a weapon featured on the Mob of the Dead level from 2013. You can obtain the Hell's Retriever on Blood of the Dead as well, but the steps required to upgrade it are quite different.

This article will explain what steps are required to get the Hell's Retriever and upgrade it. Screenshots will provided to find the secret dog symbols that are in the prison.

Required Steps:

  • Feed zombie souls into the 3 Hellhound dog heads.
  • Build the Zombie Shield.
  • Teleport to obtain the Hell's Retriever.
  • Get zombie kills with the Hell's Retriever in the Recreation Yard until a howling dog sound goes off.
  • Use the Zombie Shield to locate one of the blue dog heads, then throw the tomahawk at it.
  • Use the Zombie Shield to collect Hellhound souls in the Warden's Office.
  • Use the spirit blast on the ghost dog walking around in the Warden's Office.
  • Teleport a second time to get the Hell's Redeemer.

Black Ops 4 Blood of the Dead Hellhounds

In order to get the Hell's Retriever, you must feed the Hellhound enemies that protrude out of the walls with zombie souls. They look very similar to the Hellhound dogs that attack you during special rounds, but you can only see their heads.

There are three Hellhound heads on Blood of the Dead. You must kill zombies in front of the Hellhound heads. You'll know you did it correctly when the dogs suck in the zombies and eat them. Around 5-10 zombies must be killed in front of the Hellhounds. After you've fed the dogs, they'll disappear back into the wall.

It's very important that you feed the Hellhound dogs during the early rounds. It becomes very difficult to kill zombies next to the Hellhounds in higher rounds because you have to stand in congested areas.

The first dog on the wall is located in the New Industries building. You can access New Industries very early by opening up two doors with points. You'll see a symbol of a dog on the wall. Killing a zombie near the symbol will activate it.

The second dog head can be found inside the Alcatraz prison on Black Ops 4 Blood of the Dead. You'll have to turn on the first power switch to access the main prison area. Afterwards, you can go through the Recreation Yard. Be careful, as zombies will stretch their hands out to attack you on the catwalks. They won't deal full damage, but it's still possible to go down.

Once you're in the prison, go to the Cell Block 2nd Floor area. Feed the dog head with zombies souls until it goes away.

The last location for the Hellhound is in the Eagle Plaza. It's in between the Warden's Office and Warden's House. You'll see the dog head above a window. In order to access the area, you'll need to make sure the second power switch is on.

It can be a bit difficult to feed zombie souls to the last Hellhound because you need to open up a lot of doors. You'll be on a higher round.

Teleporting in Black Ops 4 Blood of the Dead

After you've completed all three dogs, find a teleporter. Blood of the Dead has multiple teleporters on the level that allow you quick access to other areas. It will cost a few hundred points to teleport.

You'll be flying near lava when teleporting. The Hell's Retriever is above the lava. Press the interaction button when you see the prompt at the bottom of the screen. If timed properly, your character will pick up the Hell's Retriever.

The Hell's Retriever is a tomahawk weapon that can be thrown at zombies or other enemies. You can use it multiple times, but there is a cooldown time. The upgraded version is called the Hell's Redeemer.

Upgrading the Hell's Retriever

The process required to upgrade the Hell's Retriever on Black Ops 4 Blood of the Dead is more difficult. Go to the Recreation yard where the wall weapon is located. Kill zombies with the tomahawk until you hear a howling dog sound. The howling sound indicated that you've defeated enough zombies with the tomahawk.

Because it can get quite chaotic, make sure to use Pack-a-Punched weapons, perks, and Elixirs. If you're not on solo, team up with other players.

The second step requires you to find a dog symbol on Blood of the Dead with the Zombie Shield afterlife. There are multiple locations. Make sure to hold the Zombie Shield up, otherwise, the symbol will not appear.

Throw the Hell's Retriever at the dog symbol. Below are a list of screenshots that show the dog symbols location if you're having trouble.

Warden's Office

Wait till there is a special dog round on Black Ops 4 Blood of the Dead. You have to go to the Warden's Office and collect hellhound souls with the Zombie Shield. Once you have a fully charged key, you'll see a ghostly dog walking around the Warden's Office. Use spirit blast on the ghost dog. That will cause the Hell's Redeemer to spawn in the original location of the Hell's Retriever.

Take a teleporter (fast travel) and pick up the Hell's Redeemer. The tomahawk weapon is much more powerful now. Additionally, it will have a greater throw distance and kills more zombies at once. The weapon is great to use in the higher rounds.

You'll have to complete the steps again to get the weapon when starting a new match on Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Zombies. It's possible to get the Hell's Redeemer on solo, but it might be easier if you're playing with players who can cover your back.
