Traps in Alcatraz, Mob of the Dead - Call of Duty, Black Ops 2, Zombies

Alcatraz is the first Black Ops 2 Zombie Map to bring us traps, and these traps do not disappoint. Now you have the option to cut zombies to pieces, melt them in acid, or order cover from above. The only thing better than a trap is an upgraded trap. You can upgrade your Tower Trap, but you need to do it while in Afterlife.

General Trap Information

In order to activate a trap you will need to find the switch. It is a small green box and will be attached to the wall near the trap. It has a lever on its side and a light bulb on top. The light glows green when the trap is ready to be used and red when it is in use or recharging.

I was very happy to see that we did not need to build the traps. The only preparation that is needed for using the traps is to open any doors that are blocking zombies from walking through the trap.

Traps are not quite as fun as cutting down zombies with an upgraded Death Machine. But they can save you in a punch or buy you some time when you need it. Of course, you will pay for that time. Traps can be expensive in two ways. First, you need to pay 1000 points for the privilege of using the trap. You will also lose the opportunity to get points from the zombies the traps kill.

The Fan Trap

The fan trap is build into the main doorway in the Warden's Office. There is a switch on both the inside and the outside of the door. When you buy the trap two large fan blades extend and block entry into the Warden's Office.

Plan carefully using this trap. If you trigger it from the inside it also makes it difficult to get back out of this room. You can crawl under the door. But be prepared for zombies waiting on the other side if you do this in the middle of a high round.

  • You can take out an entire train with this trap.
  • This can allow you the opportunity to hit the box or buy Speed Cola.
  • Zombies will still get in through the windows inside the Warden's Office.
  • The Fan Trap will inflict damage to a player also. The player will go instantly down.
  • The fan blades move fast and are not easily noticed. Look for the green light before rushing into this room.
  • This Trap is also available in Cell Blocks Grief.

The Acid Trap

This trap makes sense on a map where the Wonder Weapon shoots acid. The Acid Trap is located at the entrance of the Cafeteria. It covers a large area and blocks both entrances into the Cafeteria. It is basically a sprinkler system that dispenses acid instead of water. It also has the ability to kill an entire train of zombies. This trap has three switches, two on the inside and one on the outside.

Just like the Fan Trap, if you trigger this from the inside you will stuck in this room. However, you can not crawl out of here.

  • This can allow you the opportunity to pick up a new Zombie Shield or hit the box.
  • Zombies will get in through the windows inside the Cafeteria.
  • Any player that is under the acid will go down. It is always a good idea to check for players before hitting the switch.
  • This Trap is also available in Cell Blocks Grief.

The Tower Trap

This trap is located on the Docks. It is hard to miss the large tower jutting out of the ground. The trigger for this trap is on the wall of the tower that is facing the plane part. If you activate this trap it will shoot sniper rounds into the zombies. These shots become less effective at higher rounds.

Unlike the other two traps, this trap can be upgraded. Once upgraded it will shoot RPG rounds. The RPG rounds are effective for thinning out the zombies, but they can also make a lot of crawlers. In order upgrade the tower you will need to charge the Voltmeter. The meter is blocked while the trap is off, but opens when the trap is on. White Afterlife Symbols mark the area in which the Volt Meter can be accessed.

Steps for Upgrading the Tower Trap

  1. First the trap must be turned on.
  2. Enter Afterlife
  3. Shoot electricity at the Vower Meter
  4. Revive yourself

This trap will not stop an entire train as quickly as the Fan or Acid Trap will. But, it will thin out the approaching zombies and it does not trap you in this area. Players do not take damage from the RPG fire.

  • This is the only Trap that is not available in Cell Blocks Grief.

The Achievement

There is an Achievement for turning on the traps and upgrading them before round 10. This achievement is easy to complete. All you have to do is turn on the Fan Trap, turn on the Acid Trap, and turn on and upgrade the Tower Trap before the end of round 9. The traps do not have to kill any zombies.
