Until Dawn – The Best Survival Horror Game
Until Dawn is one of my favorite horror games. It combines the scary aspects of a horror movie with quick decision-making, which gets you thoroughly immersed. As soon as this game was released in 2015, gamers got hooked because of its unique storyline, awesome graphics, and immersive gameplay.
The game revolves around eight young adults that you have to control. Being stuck in a lodge on Blackwood Mountain, they need to survive the unforeseeable events that will occur until they get rescued at dawn.
The game features a “butterfly effect” theme in which gamers decide the fate of each character. There can be instances where the game asks you to do certain tasks like picking up a bat or reading a diary of someone. Depending on the choices you make, the story will change its outcome. There’s also a relationship system that changes as you make these choices, and they either help you or lead you to your demise.
Up to this day, Until Dawn is still one of the most innovative games in its genre. It gives you the feeling of watching a good horror movie while playing. Not only that, but it also makes you wonder what happens if you make different choices on your next playthrough.
Until Dawn is nothing short of a masterpiece. If you want to play games like Until Dawn, you have a lot of alternatives to choose from. Check out these fantastic horror games.

The Inpatient should rank high on your list as it is the prequel of Until Dawn. You start out as a patient that suffers from amnesia within the Blackwood Sanatorium. Your objective is to reclaim your memories. Just like Until Dawn, the decisions you make will dictate the game’s outcome.
There is also a new feature in the game where non-playable characters (NPCs) react to your actions thru voice recognition. The only difference is that you play this game from a first-person’s point of view. The creators want you to have a different feel for the game unlike in Until Dawn, which is a third-person game.
2. The Last of Us
The Last of Us puts your decision-making and reaction time to the test. You start the game playing as Joel. His objective is to escort a teenager named Ellie to a safe place in a desolated United States setting. Similar to Until Dawn, you need to make the right decisions, react to fast button prompts, and complete puzzles for you to complete this game.
The graphics of The Last of Us is amazing. Not only are the characters and buildings in this game realistic, but the scenery is breathtaking as well.
3. Detroit: Become Human
Another decision-making game like Until Dawn, Detroit: Become Human is a masterpiece that you can’t afford to miss. It is a third-person adventure game that relies on the decisions you make to get different outcomes in the story. Some of the characters you play could meet their inevitable demise if you choose certain decisions. Graphic-wise, Detroit: Become Human joins the list of the most breathtaking games.
4. Man of Medan
Man of Medan is a horror survival game that takes place on a ghost ship. It comes from the same developers as Until Dawn, so similarly you play it from the third-person perspective. A good thing about this game is that you can either do single-player or multiplayer mode. So, imagine playing Until Dawn in a multiplayer setting. Each of you can make decisions in this game. Whichever choice you make, the game will give you different outcomes.
5. The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series
If you are looking for a point-and-click type of decision-making game, then you should include this on your list. The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series is a zombie apocalyptic themed game based on its comic series. There are cinematic events with real-time decision making options that you need to select in order to progress through the game. The game features an immersive storyline that will compel you to play for hours on end.
Vampyr would be the perfect Until Dawn alternative for you when jump scares and shocks are your cup of tea. The main take of this game is that your character becomes a vampire and you face the horrors of the game as this creature of the night. Decision making is also important in this game as it would influence your game’s ending.
Oxenfree is another alternative you can play that slightly resembles Until Dawn. Known as a mystery graphic game, Oxenfree gives you the freedom to walk around the area and converse with other NPCs There are also puzzles and decisions that you need to make in order to further progress your game. The graphics are quite different from Until Dawn, but playing this game would not give you regrets.
8. Life is Strange 2
Life is Strange 2 should also be included in your must-play games like Until Dawn. It is an episodic graphic adventure game. Your main character can interact with objects and the environment. You can also talk with NPCs and there are dialogue boxes that make you choose a decision. Your decisions have an immense impact on the flow of the story.
9. State of Decay
If you want to add stealth to your survival horror game experience, then this game is worth playing. State of Decay not only depends on your decision-making abilities, but also requires you to engage in combat and simulation. You are in charge of a small group of survivors. It depends on you whether you like to follow the storyline of the game or do tasks that would ensure the survival of your group.
10. Indigo Prophecy
Also known as Fahrenheit, Indigo Prophecy has enjoyed somewhat of a cult following over the years. You play as Lucas Kane, a man who is possessed into committing murder. Decision-making is crucial in this game as well—you can end up with three endings that make you want to play this game three times to get all of the endings.
The captivating storyline will definitely hook you from the very beginning. There are also on-screen prompts that should be performed quickly because if you don’t, you might not reach the game’s ending.
