Introduction

The Turtle Beach Ear Force X12 headset for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 or PC can be crippled by various issues, including: overheating, chat or game echo, one side of the headset not working, buzzing and hissing in the headset, and more. Most of these problems can be resolved through troubleshooting, keeping you from having to fork over the cash for another nice headset or having to revert back to the headset that came with your gaming console.

The Turtle Beach Ear Force X12 headset offers flexibility and can be used with the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and computer systems.

Ear Force X12 Gets Hot When Hooked Up to PC

  • Too many USB devices connected to your computer can result in the Turtle Beach Ear Force X12 headset becoming warm or even hot. One cause of this is that the PC's USB root hub can't handle the number of USB devices connected to your computer. Disconnect some other unnecessary USB devices from the computer and then try using the headset.
  • The headset's power supply may be damaged or not up to the task of handling the power demands of both the computer and the headset, even with no other USB devices connected. Check the computer's power supply for signs of physical damage, and also check the specifications on the power supply to see if it can handle the power needs of both the PC and the headset. If it can't, consider upgrading the PC's power supply.

One Side of X12 Headset Not Working

  • Make sure all of the Turtle Beach Ear Force X12 audio cables are firmly connected. If the headset is connected to a PC, this means ensuring the green connector is plugged in firmly to the headphone jack on the PC, and if you're connecting the headset to a gaming console, this means ensuring the red and white audio cables are firmly connected to the correct audio outputs on the audio source and that those cables are firmly connected to the green connector on the headset's primary cable.
  • If you're encountering this problem listening to audio in a program on your computer, ensure that the balance output of the program is set to play in both the left and right channels and not just one channel.
  • If the headset works fine with a PC but you encounter this problem with a gaming console, try using a different 1/8-inch audio cable, if you have one, to connect the gaming controller to the headset. You can find these cables at most electronics stores or order them from Turtle Beach.

Rate Your Turtle Beach Ear Force X12 Headset

2.3 out of 5 stars from 75 ratings of Turtle Beach Ear Force X12 Headset

X12 Headset Buzzing/Hissing

  • Disconnect the charging cable from the wireless Xbox 360 controller and see if the noise goes away. A buzzing or hissing sound while the headset is connected to the Xbox 360 wireless controller can be the result of the charging cable and headset being connected to the controller at the same time.
  • You may be suffering the effects of a ground loop, which occurs when the headset is connected to two devices that are both plugged into an AC adapter with a grounding prong. Connect one or both of the power cables to two-prong adapters and then connect them to an AC outlet and see if you're still experiencing that specific problem.

Ear Force X12 Echo

  • You are likely playing the game and/or chat audio through both an external sound system and the Turtle Beach Ear Force X12 headset. Access the sound settings in each gaming console and then set up the console to output all audio through the headset only. However, keep in mind that you'll need to change this setting when you don't want to use the headset.
  • Alternatively, if your gaming console is set correctly or you're hearing an echo in your headset during a game on one of the gaming consoles or on a PC, you may be hearing the external audio coming through the headset of someone in your party.

X12 Mic Not Working

  • The Turtle Beach Ear Force X12 microphone may be muted on your computer or gaming console. Checking your computer's audio settings to ensure the mic isn't muted and move the "Mute" button on the control plate on the headset's primary cable until the light on the control plate is green to un-mute the mic.
  • Make sure the chat volume isn't turned down in the gaming consoles audio settings or in your computer's audio settings.
  • Make sure the mic cable is firmly connected to the mic input jack on a computer or that the audio cables connecting the headset to the gaming console are all firmly connected.

I put my x12 away for a little over a year. I got them out today, and everything works fine except the vox function. The mic won't stop transmitting. Is there a mic sensitivity issue that I don't know about?

PLEASE HELP! My X12s worked fine until I was booted from a party, and when I joined again I couldn't hear any chat audio(others were completely silent),but they could hear me and talk to each other. I made sure that all the wires are connected (externally, not inside the turtle beaches). This happened about 40 mins ago, and my turtle beaches are less than 1 year old.

I accidentally plugged my cord for the controller in the cord for the game sound and chat sound and vice versa. There is no green or red light on it's just off. I can't talk in the mic but I can faintly hear the game and chat volume. Is it broken or can I fix it?

So these headphones were working fine until I unplugged them from my computer and tried plugging in my sony headphones (I normally use them for my phone) Then the sony headphones didn't work and when I tried plugging in the turtle beaches there's no sound.

Hi Max, my X12's have been working perfectly up till a couple days ago, when I'm skyping with my friends, they say they can hear a buzzing noise from my mic - and I can hear it too (I assume because of the 'hear what you're saying' feature), I've only had the X12's for a couple months...

I'm getting extremely frustrated. I just bought the x12s today and I go to use them, everything's plugged in correctly, I can hear chat, my mic works, but I CAN'T HEAR THE INGAME SOUND. and it's driving me up the wall. I see others on the internet with the same problem, but I can't seem to find a friggen solution. Why won't it work... is it because I have an HDMI cable attached to my xbox?

      Hello Max.

I have been having a problem with my Turtle Beach X12 Headset.

My Xbox Live friends have been telling me that my mic has been making ruffled/static noises. I believe it is when I move the wire that connects from the "volume controller" to the xbox controller.

This might just be a problem because I move/turn/spin the wire slightly when I move around (in real life).

I don't know if there is a way to fix this, or if I should just not move around at all (impossible).

      Thanks if you can help.

      Hey,

let me quickly stress this my problem is not related to play n charge.

After around 15-30 mins people in my party start to hear a loud noise like static and buzzing and there is no way to stop it without removing the mic cable even when it is put back in it still will contiune making this noise until the xbox is rebooted, also sometimes when i first join a party or create on even though i can hear my voice in the background of the speakers there is no audio detection. I am sending these back tomorrow i just would like to know if you know what is wrong with it

My set up is as follows Xbox x12 HDPVR Surround sound TV

The X12's are directly pluged into the xbox cable of which the x12s are then pluged into the HDPVR and so on

Alright so i just got a brand new xbox controller and the x12 turtle beach headset, only problem is i had bought a black controller to match the headset and every time i talked there was nothing but static so i exchanged the controller for another one. It did the same thing until i exchanged the black ones out for a white one, everything was working ok. Now im getting complaints that when i talk it sounds like theres a fan in the back ground and when i stop talking the mic still shows saying im still talking. *NOTE* I haven't had any problems until i started playing mw3. I have no idea what could be wrong and i definitely can't take it back to walmart to exchange it.

      Hi Cath,

Make sure the mic aspect of the headset is enabled and turned up. I don't know what operating system you're using, but dig around in the audio settings for the mic component and check which mic is selected and the volume to see if this helps. I'll go home and connect my headset to my PC tonight and take a look at things and see how it's set up and let you know if I find anything out.

      Hey Jen,

Check the advanced audio options on your computer. That's about the only thing I can think of. Also, make sure all of the headset's cables are connected to the correct inputs. It is a strange problem. Also, check the audio settings associated with chatting on the game you're playing. I think that may be your problem.

      Hi Eric,

I'd disconnect other non-essential devices connected to the other USB ports on your computer, restart it and then connect your headset and see if it works. Try connecting the headset to another computer or a gaming system. If the headset works, it sounds like there may be an issue with your sound card, but I can't say for certain without seeing the computer.

Sorry I can't be more specific, but it doesn't sound like the problem is with your headset.

      Best,

      Max.

      Hi Anthony,

Try connecting the headset to your computer to see if it works. If you're still experiencing the same problem, the headset cable may be damaged or defective in some way, and your best bet in that case is to contact Turtle Beach. However, if the headset works without issue when connected to the PC, navigate to the Sound part of your Xbox's settings and ensure the game and chat audio are both turned up, and that the system is set up to output audio to the headset. There is one other thing you can do: Connect a two-prong adapter to your Xbox 360's power cable and see if you still experience the problem.

Let me know if any of that works.

      Best,

      Max.

      Hello,

When I hook up my mic to my PC, for some reason a problem occurs that I can't find a solution for on the internet. When I plug it in, with all the cables, the sound comes through for a second, then it dies and no sound comes out. When I then unplug it, no sound comes out of the computer until I shut it off and turn it back on. The mic won't work either, again, until I turn off my PC. I don't know what causes this, and I need help, please respond.

      Hi Brandon,

Do you get any sound if you don't put pressure on the wire? If you do and that sound is normal, I'd just let it be. Just because the wiring looks doesn't mean there's not a problem, and taking that piece apart may have made matters worse. You could try plugging the headset in to an iPod, other MP3 player or TV to see what kind of audio you get. I suspect this is a case where you'll need to contact Turtle Beach and cross your fingers you're still under some kind of manufacturer's warranty. Also, check the cable for damage. I have a buddy who ran over his all of the time with a rolling chair he sat in that messed up his headset over time.

      Best,

      Max.

My wiring is messed up in my x12's. If i put pressure on the end of the wire going in to the control box thing, it will fade in and fade out. i opened it up, and looked at the wires, and I'm not electrician but everything looked okay to me. I'm not sure what else is going on but i really do not want to spend money on a new headset.

      Hi Brandon,

It sounds silly, but make sure the cables associated with the X12 headset are all connected to the correct matching-colored inputs. In your case, if you plugged the white audio cable into the wrong connector, such as the yellow video jack, you won't hear any audio.

Additionally, try connecting the headset to a computer and see what kind of audio you get. If you experience the same problem, your headset has a larger issue, but if you don't, reconnect the headset to your gaming console and make sure that all of the cables are firmly connected to the connectors.

      Hope this helps.

      Best,

      Max.
