Hot food cooking (HFC for short) is one of the more important skills to have a few levels in if you intend to play the game somewhat solo. The reason for this is that a higher hot food cooking skill will give you higher quality meals which in turn will give you more nutrition per kg.

Tools You Will Need

The following list contains the tools you will need to have to level up your hot food cooking skill.

  • At least 1 frying pan.
  • At least 1 pottery bowl.
  • An oven (and later a forge).
  • A butchering knife (optional).

Leveling up Hot Food Cooking

The fastest way to level hot food cooking is to make meals that have a difficulty level close to your skill level. It's considered optimal to use a difficulty level which is +/- 10 from your hot food cooking skill level.

Before you start you should get 10 to 15 frying pans and pottery bowls. You should also have a decent amount of meat, fruit, and vegetables stored in your food storage bin.

The following method might not be the absolute best way to level HFC, but I found it to be really good and simple to follow.

Leveling up HFC - Phase 1

The first phase is to level your hot food cooking from level 1 to level 5 – 7 or so. To do this you just need to make cooked meat in a frying pan.

The steps in this phase are:

  1. Turn on your sleep bonus.
  2. (optional) Turn all your meat into fillets (This gives butchering skill).
  3. Take the fillets you have prepared and put one piece in each pottery bowl or frying pan you have.
  4. Light up your oven.
  5. Place the pottery bowls or frying pan with the meat in the oven.
  6. Wait until the meat turns into cooked meat.
  7. Rine and repeat.

Continue doing these steps until you hit level 4 – 5 or so.

How to Get Meat

There are two ways to get meat, by butchering creatures in the wild (or on your deed) or by fishing. If you have a deed with a spirit warrior, then you can just butcher the creatures that end up dying on your deed. Otherwise, you will need to go hunting or fishing which is outside the scope of this guide.

Phase 2 - Making Casseroles

In this phase, you will level your HFC up to level 10 – 11. To do this you need to make casseroles, which can only be made in pottery bowls. You can make pottery bowls out of clay which you can dig for in the wild or you can bother your fellow players for clay or just the pottery bowls themselves.

To make a casserole you need one piece of meat and one piece of fruit or grain. Fruits and grains are, for example, strawberries, lingonberries, rye, barley, and so forth. You can also use mushrooms.

Note that you can skip this step and continue using the phase one method until your HFC hits level 10. But it will cost you a lot more meat.

  2. (optional) Turn all your meat into fillets (This gives butchering skill).
  3. Take the fillets and fruits or grain you have prepared and put one of each in each pottery bowl you have.
  4. Light up your oven.
  5. Place the pottery bowls with the meat and fruit or grain in the oven.
  6. Wait until the ingredients turn into a casserole.
  7. Rinse and repeat.

Continue doing these steps until you hit level 10 – 11 or so.

How to Get Fruits, Grains, and Mushrooms

This is probably the more bothersome aspect of leveling HFC. The fastest way to get these items is by foraging for them, but it will take a decent amount of in-game time to get enough. You could also farm for your grains, but that will also take time, albeit while you can be doing other things in-game.

Personally, I'd just do the foraging as you won't need that many items to get your HFC above 10.

Phase 3 - Making Breakfast

In this phase, you will level your HFC up to level 25 – 30 by making breakfasts. To do this you will need to use your pottery bowls from before. And you also need meat and/or vegetables.

The nice part here is that you can choose to use either one piece of meat or one piece of a vegetable to make breakfast.

  1. Turn on your sleep bonus.
  2. (optional) Turn all your meat into fillets (This gives butchering skill).
  3. Take the fillets and vegetables you have prepared and put one in each frying pan you have. Only one piece of meat or one piece of a vegetable per pan.
  4. Light up your oven.
  5. Place the frying pans in the oven.
  6. Wait until the meat and veggies turn into breakfast
  7. Rinse and repeat.

Continue doing these steps until you hit level 25 – 30 or so.

Phase 4 - Making Meals

In this phase, you will level your HFC up to level 35 – 40 by making meals. To do that you will need a few frying pans, meat, and vegetables. You can make frying pans out of iron with an anvil, or you can bother your fellow players for a few pans.

Technically you don't need to grind anymore as you can just allow this skill to grow naturally as you prepare meals to eat.

  4. Light up your oven.
  5. Place the frying pans with the meat and veggies in the oven.
  6. Wait until the meat and veggies turn into a meal.
  7. Rinse and repeat.

How to Get Vegetables

This phase requires you to have collected a decent number of vegetables. To get vegetables you can either forage or farm them. If you're alone in the wild or on your own deed I'd recommend getting the vegetables from foraging as it takes far more time to farm them. This applies to the vegetables you are going to use for leveling HFC. For cooking your own meals I'd recommend farming pumpkins as they are easy to farm and each weighs 1.0 kg so it adds a lot to the meal.

I'd also recommend using 10 – 20 frying pans and waiting until you have 100 meat and 100 vegetables before starting, but you can of course decide to start with a different amount of ingredients and bowls if you see fit.

When You Hit 35 in HFC

From this point forward this becomes a little trickier. You can start to add more ingredients to your meal, making it more complex and thus harder to make. What you want is to have the difficulty of the meal about the same as your HFC skill level is. To see the difficulty of a dish you can right-click the frying pan with the ingredients and click the lore option. You can try different combinations of veggies and spices to see how they affect the difficulty of the dish.

As a side note. I am not entirely sure if this works, but I have been told that using a forge instead of an oven makes the meal "harder" to make so you can continue using the phase 3 method up to HFC level 50. I'll try it out one of these days and report on it here.

So that's about all I know about leveling hot food cooking. Hope this simple explanation comes in handy and please add some comments if you have any tips or tricks for us Wurmians to use.
