Generally speaking, the Paladin job is for players that want to be the first to attack and the last to stand in the battlefield. However, this job is not limited to tanking alone. It also has variety of skills that can deal tons of damage to its enemies.

Skills

Here are the skills your Paladin should have.

Swordsman Skills

  • Bash – Deals heavy damage to a single enemy with a chance to stun your target at higher skill level.
  • Magnum Break – This is your only AOE damage skill until you become a Paladin. Magnum Break is also a free source of converting your attack into fire.
  • Taunt – Taunt is the most important skill if you're playing as a tank. The skill will force the enemies to attack your character so that they won’t attack the main damage dealers in the party.
  • Endure – There are two primary functions of this skill. The first one is to prevent your character from pausing or being pushed back when attacked. The second one is for increasing MDEF.
  • Sword Mastery – Passively increases your attack when using a sword.
  • Increase Recuperative Power – Passively increases your recovery rate.

Crusader Skills

  • Heal – Replenishes the health of you and your party. The healing power is based on your intelligence and level.
  • Holy Cross – Deals heavy holy damage on a single enemy. The skill also has a chance to blind your target. You should take note that a spear type weapon should be used in order to get the full damage of Holy Cross.
  • Shield Charge – A short-range shield attack that has a chance to stun your target.
  • Shield Chain – The bread and butter skill of the Crusader. Shield Chain can deal heavy damage to a single target in range.
  • Auto Guard – This is your primary defensive skill. At level 10, Auto Guard has a 50% chance to block damage. Even if you're not playing as a tank. This skill provides excellent defensive capabilities.
  • Devotion – An important skill for a tank build. This will let you protect a party member by transferring all the damage that they will receive to your character.
  • Spear Mastery – Passively increases your attack when using a spear.
  • Spear Quicken – A must-have skill for an agility/critical build. Spear Quicken increases your attack speed when using a spear. It also increases your critical chance and flee rate. At breakthrough, the skill can also increase auto attack for a massive amount.
  • Cavalry Combat – Recommended when using mount to avoid the attack speed reduction penalty.
  • Cavalry Mastery – Grants an increase in damage to large-sized enemies. FYI, the majority of bosses are large monsters.
  • Divine Protection – Passively increases your defense, especially against undead and devil monsters.

Paladin Skills

  • Grand Cross – Deals massive AOE holy damage at the cost of some percentage of your life.
  • Providence – Greatly increases the whole party’s defense against demon and holy damage. Providence also increases the damage of both Holy Cross and Grand Cross.
  • Retribution – Passively increases your attack and the damage you deal against undead and devil monsters.
  • Defensive Aura – When cast, you'll take less damage from ranged physical auto attacks at the cost of movement speed and attack speed. This works well against archer type enemies.
  • Shield Boomerang – Deals powerful long-ranged damage to your target. The catch of this skill is its longer cooldown.
  • Selfless Shield – Greatly reduces the damage received by the whole party. Take note that the caster is not included in the damage reduction.
  • Reflect Shield – Returns some portion of the melee attack received.
  • Sacrifice – Sacrifice some portion of your HP to make your auto attack deal heavy damage that ignores both flee and defense. This skill is very effective in PVP.
  • Bliss – Passively increases vitality and healing received.
  • Faith – Passively receive an HP boost and a reduction in holy damage.

Speed Level Build Guide

Below is my recommended build from Novice to Crusader. It focuses on dealing as much damage as possible to enemies so that you can efficiently use your limited combat time to level up quickly.

Novice Speed Level Build Guide

Put all your stats on strength for maximum damage since you will only rely on your basic attack.

Swordsman Speed Level Build Guide

Assume that you took the growth pack bag which gives you a sword that is better than the commonly looted weapons. Your primary damage dealer here is Magnum Break. You should grind on monsters that are weak to fire, such as undead and earth element monsters.

Skills

  • Bash: 5
  • Magnum Break: 10
  • Sword Mastery: 10
  • Increase Recuperative Power: 10
  • Taunt: 5

Stats

  • Strength – Put everything here.
  • Dexeterity – Minimum of 30.

Crusader Speed Level Build Guide

Shield Chain will be your primary damage dealer for this build. The skill itself is really strong against single enemies, which maximizes your combat time.

At this rate, it is better to equip a spear so that you’ll get higher attack from Spear Mastery. And make sure that your minimum dexterity is 60 so that you won’t have any casting time on Shield Chain.

Skills

  • Shield Charge: 3
  • Shield Chain: 10
  • Cavalry Combat: 5
  • Spear Mastery: 10
  • Cavalry Mastery: 5
  • Devotion: 1
  • Divine Protection: 6

Stats

  • Strength – Put everything here.
  • Dexterity – Minimum of 60 for no cast Shield Chain.

How to Solve Your SP Problems

The majority of the builds in this article are SP hungry since it relies heavily on skills to deal damage. Your primary source of SP here are not from potions. Your SP will come from eating meals. Below are two things that you need to do to have a bountiful amount of SP.

1. Consume Warm Meal or Hot Meal

Both of these items can easily be bought at the Food Shop. Consuming these meals grants you some HP and SP.

You can have one free Warm Meal everyday and one free Hot Meal as an option if you’re a premium player.

2. Consume Cooked Meals

One of the important things that you need to learn in Ragnarok M is cooking. Eating Cooked Meals grants you stat bonuses and fills up your discharge HP and SP. Discharge works like auto potions that are in reserve. It will automatically be used when you're low on HP or SP.

Note: HP and SP that is in discharge will never expire, so don’t hesitate to stock up as much HP and SP as you can.

Shield Chain Build

This Shield Chain build is considered to be the most popular and versatile build for the Paladin. The build works well in both grinding and PVP.

The downside of this build is that the skill Shield Chain consumes a lot of SP. Not to mention that Mirror Shield also makes it more SP hungry. So make sure you store a lot of SP discharge in your pool.

  • Bash: 10
  • Magnum Break: 1
  • Taunt: 9
  • Endure: 10

Shield Boomerang Build

This is a tank build that can deal powerful damage to a single target via Shield Boomerang.

The known downside of this build is Shield Boomerang’s four-second cooldown and low hit rate. So during PVP, use Shield Charge to stun your target first. For grinding, it is recommended that you grind on monsters that you can one-hit-kill with Shield Boomerang.

Grand Cross/Holy Cross Build

If you’re trying to find a build that specializes in vanishing evil, then this is the one that you’re looking for. This is a caster-type Paladin that can deal huge holy area damage.

Many consider this to be the best build for grinding at Glast Heim since most of the enemies there are undead and shadow element monsters.

Skills

  • Bash: 10
  • Magnum Break: 1
  • Taunt: 9
  • Endure: 10
  • Increase Recuperative Power: 10

  • Holy Cross - Empower

Equipment

  • Spearfish Pike
  • Shield of Naga
  • Orlean’s Necklace/Orlean’s Gloves

Agi Crit Spear Build

This build is cheaper to maintain compared to other Paladin builds since it doesn’t rely on a large amount of SP to work. The key skill here is Spear Quicken, which generously increases your attack speed, critical, flee, and auto attack at breakthrough.

  • Bash: 10
  • Magnum Break: 1
  • Taunt: 9
  • Endure: 10
  • Increase Recuperative Power: 10

  • Spear Mastery: 10 – 20 at breakthrough
  • Cavalry Combat: 5
  • Cavalry Mastery: 5
  • Auto Guard: 10
  • Retribution: 10 – 20 at breakthrough
  • Faith: 10
  • Bliss: 5
  • Reflect Shield: 10
  • Defensive Aura: 5/Providence: 5

Stats

  • Agility – 99
  • Luck - 40
  • Strength – Put all the remaining points here for maximum possible damage.

Runes

  • Auto Attack - Enpower
  • Atk
  • Refine Atk

Equipment

  • Long Horn/Crescent Scythe/Storm Pike
  • Cat’s Blessing
  • Sack Teddy Shoes
  • Blueeve Cape
  • Brooch/AGI Pin

Sacrifice Build

This is one of the best builds for PVP because you won’t need expensive equipment to dominate your opponents. What this build lacks is grinding capability, so as much as I highly recommend this build for PVP, I don’t suggest that you use this for leveling up and farming.

  • Bash: 9
  • Magnum Break: 1

  • Endure: 10
  • Increase Recuperative Power: 10

  • Auto Attack – Empower
  • HP
  • Atk
  • Refine Atk

Equipment

  • Cardo/Storm Pike
  • Goibne’s Armor
  • Goibne’s Helm
  • Goibne’s Greaves
