The 10 Coolest Epic Mounts in "World of Warcraft"

Epiphany is a gamer and a big fan of "World of Warcraft," especially collecting mounts.

Welcome to the 10 coolest epic mounts in World of Warcraft! As many WoW players know, there is a lot of status to be gained from riding a cool mount. This article tries to review the most awesome epic mounts on offer and hopefully give you a helping hand on getting them. The following are our 10 favorite mounts, in no particular order.

Top 10 Epic Mounts in WoW

  1. Rivendare's Charger
  2. Swift Razzashi Raptor
  3. Swift Spectral Tiger
  4. Raven Lord
  5. White Polar Bear
  6. Fiery Warhorse
  7. Amani War Bear
  8. Winterspring Frostsaber
  9. Headless Horseman's Mount
  10. Black Qiraji Battle Tank
Rivendare's Charger

Rivendare's Charger

1. Rivendare's Charger

This was a major status symbol back before the days of The Burning Crusade. This mount is incredibly sought-after and is still available to this day.

Rivendare's Charger, as you may have guessed, is the undead horse ridden by Baron Rivendare at the end of Stratholme. Baron Rivendare is a very busy chap; he can also be found in the newly retooled Naxxramas. However, the Baron you're after if you want the horse is the one from Stratholme.

Recently, Rivendare's Charger has gone down from being what was considered one of the hardest mounts to obtain in game to one of the easiest. Not only has Blizzard decided to increase the drop chance, but virtually any class is now able to solo the whole of Stratholme; therefore, it's just a matter of patience and rerunning the instance until you see this drop.

That being said, it's still one of the coolest epic mounts in World of Warcraft.

Mount Name: Rivendare's Charger
Item Name
: Deathcharger's Reins
Obtainable From
: Stratholme (Level 58–60)
Dropped By
: Baron Rivendare
Available To: Both Alliance and Horde
Still Available: Yes

Swift Razzashi Raptor

Swift Razzashi Raptor

2. Swift Razzashi Raptor

The Raptors are very cool mounts, and very seldom available to the Alliance. Thankfully enough, it is actually possible to obtain one of these Raptors in Zul'Gurub.

The Swift Razzashi Raptor is dropped by an optional boss called Bloodlord Mandokir. Again, this is another mount that is easier to obtain since characters now have much higher levels.

Mount Name: Swift Razzashi Raptor
Item Name: Swift Razzashi Raptor
Obtainable From: Zul'Gurub (level 60)
Dropped By: Bloodlord Mandokir
Available To: Both Alliance and Horde
Still Available: Yes

Swift Spectral Tiger

Swift Spectral Tiger

3. Swift Spectral Tiger

This is one of the coolest epic mounts in the game; however, it loses cool points due to how you obtain it.

The Swift Spectral Tiger is only obtainable through the World of Warcraft Customisable Card Game. That means that you have to spend real world money if you want it. Thankfully places like eBay make this easier for you, but still, you have to have a long hard think about whether it is really worth spending your hard earned cash on it.

The tiger itself is an incredibly cool mount. As you can see in the picture, it is actually translucent, meaning it looks very cool and ghostly! Hence the name Spectral.

At the time of writing, this card was selling on eBay for around £800 ($1100 USD)

Despite the way in which it is obtained, this is definitely one of the coolest epic mounts in World of Warcraft.

Mount Name: Swift Spectral Tiger
Item Name: Reins of the Swift Spectral Tiger
Obtainable From: World of Warcraft CCG
Card Required: Spectral Tiger (Fires of Outland expansion)
Available To: Both Alliance and Horde
Still Available: Yes, but expensive

Raven Lord

Raven Lord

4. Raven Lord

The Raven Lord is either a very cool, or very stupid mount. For looks, the Raven Lord should get 10 out of 10. Unfortunately, one of the key problems is that the Raven Lord is a giant bird . . . and a land-only mount.

Despite its failings, the Raven Lord gets onto the list of the top coolest epic mounts in World of Warcraft because of its uniqueness and its difficulty to obtain.

You must have a druid in your party that possesses the Essence-Infused Moonstone, an item the druid would have picked up during their epic flight form quest.

This item is used to summon Anzu, a bird boss in Sethekk Halls, who upon slaying might drop the Reins of the Raven Lord.

Despite it's clipped wings, the Raven Lord is still seen as a major status symbol in the game. Very cool.

Mount Name: Raven Lord
Item Name: Reins of the Raven Lord.
Obtainable From: Sethekk Halls (level 67–69)
Dropped By: Anzu (can only be summoned by a druid)
Available To: Both Alliance and Horde
Still Available: Yes

White Polar Bear

White Polar Bear

5. White Polar Bear

Despite the number of new epic mounts introduced in Wrath of the Lich King, this is the only entry in our list that comes from that expansion.

The White Polar Bear is a very cool mount, and is reasonably difficult to obtain. It is a random drop from a bag that you get as a quest reward for a daily quest in Storm Peaks.

It has a 1% drop chance, and you can only do the daily once per day. Therefore some very basic napkin maths will show us that it could take you 100 days to obtain it.

This is definitely one of the coolest epic mounts in the game. Who wouldn't want to ride their own Polar Bear?

Mount Name: White Polar Bear Mount
Item Name: Reins of the White Polar Bear
Obtainable From: Brunnhildar Village daily quest (Storm Peaks)
Dropped By: Hyldnir Spoils (bag)
Available To: Both Alliance and Horde
Still Available: Yes

Fiery Warhorse

Fiery Warhorse

6. Fiery Warhorse

The Fiery Warhorse is obtainable in a very similar way to Baron Rivendare's Charger. The Warhorse is dropped by Attumen the Huntsman in Karazhan (the level 70 10-man Raid instance)

Today, this mount is easily farmable. Attumen is the first boss in Karazhan, so it doesn't take much time to reach him.

It used to be one of the coolest epic mounts in World of Warcraft, and I think it still deserves its place amongst the 10 coolest.

Mount Name: Fiery Warhorse
Item Name: Fiery Warhorse's Reins
Obtainable From: Karazhan (Level 70 10-man raid)
Dropped By: Attumen the Huntsman
Available To: Both Alliance and Horde
Still Available: Yes

Amani War Bear

Amani War Bear

7. Amani War Bear

The Amani War Bear is a cool mount. This is a major status symbol. Even more so now as it is no longer obtainable. It has since been replaced by the Amani Battle Bear, which is the same model with a different color scheme. Since the Battle Bear is easy to get, though, it does not have the same status as the original War Bear.

The War Bear mount was awarded to players who managed to finish a timed event in Zul'aman that basically involved killing all the bosses in super speed. It started to go down from the height of coolness after The Burning Crusade has been out for a very long time, and most guilds who had Zul'aman on farm status had players with these things.

You would often see players sitting idle in the middle of Stormwind or Orgrimmar mounted, just to show off this thing.

A cool mount in its day, that lost popularity as more and more guilds were rushing through Zul'aman. Returned to its coolness status by no longer being available.

Mount Name: Amani War Bear
Item Name: Amani War Bear
Obtainable From: Zul'aman (Level 70 - 10 man raid)
Dropped In: Ashli's Bag
Available To: Both Alliance and Horde
Still Available: No (instead, you get the Amani Battle Bear)

Winterspring Frostsaber

Winterspring Frostsaber

8. Winterspring Frostsaber

This rates very highly amongst the coolest epic mounts in World of Warcraft. It also takes a very long time to obtain. Although unlike the White Polar Bear, you can definitely work your way towards this one.

The Winterspring Frostsaber is obtained through repeatable quests in the zone of... you've probably guessed by now... Winterspring.

To get the mount you need to do the repeatable quests until you hit exalted with the Wintersaber Trainers. It can take a long time - some people boast of having done it in only 4 or 5 days of grinding, others claim to have done it on and off for a few months. It is really up to you how you do it, but good luck if you decide to get it!

Once you do obtain the mount, don't be surprised if your fellow guildies think it's a rather sad achievement, rather than a cool mount!

Mount Name: Winterspring Frostsaber
Item Name: Reins of the Winterspring Frostsaber
Obtainable From: Winterspring
Reward For: Exalted with Wintersaber Trainers
Available To: Alliance only
Still Available: Yes

Headless Horseman's Mount

Headless Horseman's Mount

9. Headless Horseman's Mount

Unlike the Raven Lord, this is a very cool mount because despite of it's looks at first glance, this horse actually scales with your riding skill. Therefore if you learn how to ride flying mounts, you can fly this horse in the Outlands and Northrend.

It might be a little unfair including a flying mount in a list of epic land mounts, but hey, it's my list.

The other cool factor of this horse, is that you can only obtain it during the Hallow's End festival, and only by summoning the Headless Horseman in the scarlet monastery graveyard.

A very cool mount, being able to use the same mount in Northrend, Outlands and Azeroth certainly has appeal.

Mount Name: Headless Horseman's Mount
Item Name: The Horseman's Reins
Obtainable From: Scarlet Monastery Graveyard (during Hallow's End festival)
Dropped By: The Headless Horseman
Available To: Both Alliance and Horde
Still Available: Yes (but only during the Hallow's End festival)

10. Black Qiraji Battle Tank

I have deliberately not ranked these 10 mounts; however, I would have to say that the Black Qiraji Battle Tank is the coolest epic mount in World of Warcraft.

One of the main reasons why this remains as the coolest epic mount in the game is because of the fact that it could only ever be obtained from the quest line heading up to the opening of the gates to Ahn'Qiraj. Once the gates are open on your server, other players had 10 hours in which to hand in the same quest or be doomed to forever not have the coolest mount in the game.

This is a very cool mount now, simply because a lot of the players (dare I guess the majority of players?) were not around when AQ40 was first opened, and therefore it is certainly a minority mount.

It is supposedly possible to still obtain this mount by joining a brand new realm as Blizzard opens it. However people are still doubtful about how true these claims are.

Most definitely the coolest epic mount in World of Warcraft.

Mount Name: Black Qiraji Battle Tank
Item Name: Black Qiraji Resonating Crystal
Obtainable From: Ahn'Qiraj gate opening event quests
Available To: Both Alliance and Horde
Still Available: Possibly!

Robhuter on August 03, 2020:

Im level 95

Poecequeddy on November 19, 2013:

That is the suitable weblog for anyone who needs to seek out out about this topic. You realize so much its virtually onerous to argue with you (not that I really would want…HaHa). You undoubtedly put a brand new spin on a subject that's been written about for years. Great stuff, just great!

iceols on October 31, 2012:

The Black Qiraji Battle Tank will no longer exist at all in WoW once the players quit move on or delete their accounts .

Grease on July 06, 2012:

All this talk of mounts reminds me that there is a better game than this called Mount & Blade. The only mounts are horse, though, and Warband is the best according to:

But hey, WOW is a great game, only I don't like how much time it takes to level up and unlock new mounts and stuff like that. It's just not my game

John Roberts from South Yorkshire, England on April 15, 2012:

Have to agree with all except the last one you mentioned. I much prefer the old RaF Zehvra, seeing as Zebras are my favourite animals.

Ooh, and Yaks are available mounts in Mists of Pandaria! ^^

mygameguides from The Internet... ;) on April 05, 2012:

We sould be able to design own own mounts! Good idea or what?

So we would choose from various design, head options, size, features etc.

Tom jellybean on April 05, 2012:

Wow is alsome it changes my life hopefully there will be cooler ones soon

Brett rajkowski on April 05, 2012:

Why not show a dragon u lasy retarts

Cool but saw better ones but still really cool on April 05, 2012:

Cool but saw better ones but it's still pretty cool

mygameguides from The Internet... ;) on March 31, 2012:

Yep the Qiraji Battle Tank is very cool indeed :)

Laryn on January 29, 2012:

What about golden king or flame ward hippogryph?? Those are awesome

christinepurr on November 09, 2011:

Cool list, but there are so many cooler mounts over the raptor, or the Baron's mount. White War Talbuk is AWESOME in looks and animation, and Vial of the Sands should be at the very top. Expensive, and turning into a dragon is just plain awesome!

gareth on October 07, 2011:

just to clarify the amani war bear is still available in the heroic version o the timed run.. I know I got it 2 nights ago on nordrassil eu

chaladar on September 28, 2011:

Nice guide, these mounts are awesome! I also suggest that If you guys are looking for more information on epic mounts and how to get them to take a look at the wow guides on Cheers!

Cameron on September 19, 2011:

U missed out my favorite mount... the Time lost proto drake

willowjana on September 11, 2011:

Ooops I mean ZA. I think I need some ZZ's lol.

willowjana on September 11, 2011:

Rivendare's mount is still available (I do realize this is article was written a good while ago, but I did want to clarify). I actually got the drop a few days ago! I decided to give it a try and on my fourth reset it dropped. A few others are also available with a new look now that ZG and ZZ are reopened for lvl 85's.

chriss on May 28, 2011:

cmon man you tottaly left out the ZG zulian tiger

dwaik on February 09, 2011:

goblin turbotrike is awsome!!

Joseph on February 03, 2011:

You left out the ZG Zulian tiger which easily surpasses the polar bear or winterspring tiger. Not sure when this arcticle was made, but Arthas mount Invincible should be on that list as well since people had to kill LK 25 heroic which only a small minority of guilds could accomplish. The spectral tiger doesn't have to be obtained through TCG like the OP mentioned. You can literally buy these in game for 90k-225k depending on the seller. I managed to buy a swift spectral tiger last night for 175k which isn't bad at all since the availablity grows smaller over time and the price only gets higher.

Jacob on January 16, 2011:

Wait so people drop mounts? And you pick them up as an item? I thought u had to buy mounts... :/

TGS on January 02, 2011:

Yeah, some of them haven't been available for a good while, but with Cataclysm they took out Rivendares, along with the Raptor. 3/4 of them weren't available before that even though and some are seasonal. Still a good list, as these are some of the coolest regular mounts in game. The Celestial steed is also pretty friggin awesome, for $25?

Michael Murchie from Parts Unknown on December 30, 2010:

Nice hub, but some of these are no longer available since the launch of Cataclysm :(

Still, rate up !!

ladywow on December 28, 2010:

it would be funny to have the raven lord and headless horseman mount, a bird that can't fly and a horse that can :P

mc on December 17, 2010:

Black Qiraji Battle Tank is NOT an EPIC mount. It is a LEGENDARY mount. The only one in game at the moment that was ever obtainable by normal players. The only other Legendary mount was Peep's Whistle, but that is not available to players...

=( on November 13, 2010:

Deffinently left out the only tiger mount a horde player can get. which is swift zulian tiger and Eldkaste the equivalent is the frostwolf

Eldkaste on July 22, 2010:

Venomhide Ravasur is the equivalent of Winterspring Saber.

Horde on July 20, 2010:

I know the winterspring tiger isn't obtainable to horde, so what's the horde version of that mount? Just a wild guess but maybe a wolf?

Matt Brady on June 05, 2010:

Great pics here - it's like a hall of fame of epic mounts. The Winterspring mount looks so cool, and is sure an upgrade. And of course, have a fashion set of gear available in case you need to really shoe off he mount in its best light!

Aemilou on January 04, 2010:

I just looked it up and Nareli is correct.

It says which realm was the first to be opened that way, so yours may have been made before that.

I wish I could get it though, or if they would at least make the other crystals rideable outside the temple.

xaviamage on August 16, 2009:

great work , good details about mounts

Nareli on June 10, 2009:

Actually Arkanis, you must've been hallucinating. Check anywhere - the battle tank is no longer obtainable. I realize your comment was three months ago, but even back then I was going by the comments of many people on both the offical WoW forums and WoWHead. :/

Ze tiger on April 30, 2009:

one mount you forgot to metio is the swift zulian tiger, its the best looking land mount in game imo. anyway, nice list :)

namehere on April 22, 2009:

It's funny because there is 0 mention of "land epic" mounts until the second to last mount offered up.

Perhaps the author should have clarified at the start, not hidden that tidbit in the middle of the article.

kizile on March 31, 2009:

If you're making comments about how flying mounts are not on this list, you should probably read where it says these are epic land mounts. The internets are not infinate space, so please dont waste it with your garbage.

That being said, nice list. Wish i was epic for the opening of AQ on my server.

Engzell from Stockholm on March 25, 2009:

Nice pics actually!

Arkanis on March 24, 2009:

Actually, Nareli, you're wrong. I remember that, on the server I had my Blood Elf Paladin on, they were going through the AQ40 event again. Either that, or I was on crack and hallucinating. And I've never used crack or any other drugs for that matter. So it might indeed still be possible to obtain

Nareli on March 23, 2009:

The Qiraji tank is no longer available, due to the fact Blizzard will now have the Gates of AQ automatically open with a new server. Such a pity.

Mathematics on March 23, 2009:

If something has a 1% drop chance, and you attempt it 100 times, the chance of succeeding is only about 63%.

The chance of not getting it is 99/100. 100 trials comes out to (99/100)^100, which is about 36%, which means you still have a roughly 36% of not getting it after 100 attempts.

namehere on March 23, 2009:

Dude, you totally left out the Ashes of Alar...flaming phoenix is way better than a white polar bear any day.
