Lord of Heroes is a story-driven role-playing mobile game with equipment gacha and limited character gacha features. The game currently contains 84 heroes that a user can unlock and use in combat features in between story dialogue. These are all heroes that are introduced in the story and come in one of five elements - fire, earth, water, light, or dark - and in one of five classes - striker, sniper, warrior, guardian, or cleric. Many of the heroes can be obtained in multiple elements and in multiple classes. The reason for this is explained during the story (you'll find out in Hard mode), so I will not spoil that here.
Though the character gacha and Contract mechanism are introduced as part of the tutorial, how to obtain the rest of the characters can be unclear to new players. Obtaining new heroes is essential to advance through the story and to improve your lord level, as this only increases by obtaining characters, ascending characters, and promoting characters. And a higher lord level is needed to unlock new combat formations and even to obtain some of the heroes.
Here I describe the various ways that characters can be obtained in Lord of Heroes to help new players make the most of their gaming experience.
Ways to Obtain New Characters
As I mentioned before, there are a number of different ways to obtain new characters in Lord of Heroes. These consist of the following, which I will explain in more detail later:
- Starter heroes
- Story progression
- Summon (gacha)
How to View Unlockable Characters on the Heroes Screen
One way to view unlockable characters is by using the Heroes screen. To access this screen, click on Heroes in the home Citadel screen as shown below.
Once you click on Heroes, you will see the Heroes screen with the characters you own on the left-hand side. If you scroll down past your heroes, you will see unlockable characters. Clicking on one of these characters will show you their class, skills, and a Recruit option.
Clicking on the Recruit button will display a screen showing the character's stats, skills, class, a short description, likes by other players, comments by other players, and prerequisites for unlocking the character.
How to View Unlockable Characters With the Chronicles Screen
Another way to see unlockable characters and prerequisites is using the Chronicles screen. This can be found on the home Citadel screen by clicking on Chronicles above the blue-haired girl Mu as shown in the following image.
Once you click on Chronicles, you will see the following screen with the unlockable characters displayed in hexagons above grid diamonds in various parts of the screen depending on what region of the story they originate from. Scroll to the right to see them all. Characters you have not yet unlocked have a dimmed image with a locked padlock towards the top. Clicking on the heroes will display their name, element, class, a short description, number of likes by other players, comments by other players, and prerequisites for unlocking the hero. However, unlike the Recruit screen accessed through the Heroes screen, you will not see the character's stats and skills until you attempt to unlock the character.
You start with several free heroes, primarily from Avillon, which is the nation you as the player are the monarch of. These include water Fram, light Johan, and earth Charlotte, plus dark Mikhail from Lumisade. All of these heroes are circled in red above.
You also get a number of free heroes as you progress through the story during Normal mode. These include earth Schneider, fire Zaira, fire Mei Ling, water Helga, and earth Astrid. You will receive these heroes after encountering them in the story and completing a particular story stage.
Summon, or Contract Summon, is the gacha mechanism for obtaining 5-star heroes. This screen is accessed by clicking on the Summon pocket watch icon at the bottom of the home Citadel screen, as shown above. You get one free 10x summon as part of the tutorial. After that, each summon costs 50 linkstone. There is no benefit to saving up linkstone to do the 10x summon. Linkstone is pretty rare in the game and is usually only obtained through limited time events or by purchasing it with real-world money. It can also occasionally be obtained by watching an ad in the Mystic Shop, so check regularly.
This summoning mechanism is also known as Contract Summon because there are a limited number of heroes available through this method. These heroes are the ones that you can normally obtain through a Contract, described below.
The chances of getting a hero are 2%, as shown above. This seems low, but it is a decent rate for a gacha game. You are also guaranteed a hero in 90 attempts. This resets if you obtain one. The hero you may receive is random, but you can increase the chances of getting 3 heroes out of those available by picking them from the lineup. You can change your choices at any time.
Most of what you will receive from summing are relics, which are like extra weapons only available for Contract heroes. Relics have 3 tiers: divine, refined, and normal. Typically, higher tier relics provide better benefits. Relics are exclusive to a single character, so chances are that you will end up with a lot of unused relics until you get more of the characters.
Contracts are basically long-term login bonuses. You are directed to start your first contract during the tutorial, but it is easy to forget about it. Do not make this mistake! Click on the Contract banner on the home Citadel screen as shown above to pick a hero to form a contract with. You will have a choice of 3 heroes. The first three options are water Krom, fire Lairei, and earth Lucilicca. The first contract lasts 15 days. You have to log in every day and on the 15th day, you will receive the hero you picked. You will then have the opportunity to choose 1 of the other 2 heroes. This next contract lasts 30 days. Below you can see a partially complete 30-day contract for fire Lairei. As you can see, each day you receive a different login bonus. These tend to get better as you get farther along into the contract. Make sure you log in every day because the contract will be voided if you miss a day. To renew the contract, you will need to pay crystals.
There are currently 5 contract pools of heroes, and each time you can pick 2 of the 3 heroes. This means you can complete a contract 10 times. You would have to play the game for quite a long time to receive them all. The hero you do not select from each pool can then only be received from Contract Summons.
Other heroes are generally obtained in the Chronicles screen. By clicking around on the various heroes, you can see what the prerequisites are for obtaining them. The easiest heroes to obtain cost either 3,000 or 6,000 crystals. Crystals are obtained in various ways including first-time stage completions, daily coliseum rewards, clearing Obelisk stages, events, and feats.
More heroes can be obtained with renown, which is obtained from clearing regions of the story map, winning coliseum matches, expeditions, clearing Obelisk stages, and completing events. The cost to unlock heroes with renown varies but ranges from 100,000 to 5,000,000.
Two heroes can be unlocked with Alliance credits: earth Zaira and water Nine. Credits are earned by battling the raid boss. You only get two raid battles per day, so make sure you don't skip them. If you're worried that your heroes are not strong enough to do much damage, you can use provided support heroes to supplement your roster. Regardless, even if you do minimal damage, you will still earn Alliance credits.
Once you have enough Alliance credits, you need to access the Alliance Shop to unlock the heroes. To do this, select Alliance at the bottom of the home Citadel screen and then click on Alliance Shop on the left, as shown below.
One hero can be unlocked with gold: dark Astrid. She is clearly an end-game unit, as you need to occupy one of the final regions of the game in the hardest difficulty before you can unlock her. She also costs 77,777,777 gold, which will take a significant amount of time to acquire (especially since upgrading equipment, which is essential to progress through the game, eats up gold quickly).
Though Lord of Heroes can definitely be played as a free-to-play game, there are also unlockable characters that require payments of real-world money. There are currently 30 heroes that you have to pay to obtain. However, only a few of these characters are available to be purchased at any one time. These characters can be purchased in the Shop, or in the Hero screen or Chronicles screen. Typically purchasing a character will also provide bonus benefits as well. Below you can see how to pay for dark Lucilicca in the Chronicles screen.
If you click on a character that is only unlockable with money but is not currently available for purchase, you will see the following message: "This hero is wandering and cannot be recruited."
There are also occasionally heroes you can receive through events. The one everyone can obtain is earth Olivia, shown below. She is provided to the player after the first 7 logins, similar to a Contract.
Another recent example of an event hero is water Johan, shown below.
Water Johan can be obtained through the With Friends For Children event in collaboration with UNICEF Korea. You receive points for inviting friends to play Lord of Heroes, and with enough points, you can unlock water Johan. How often these events will occur and whether heroes can be obtained at a later time is unclear.
