Having a build in mind will make your journey in Diablo II: Resurrected easier during higher difficulties.

Paladins are known for their offensive and defensive auras, and those can be combined with combat skills that use a weapon and shield.

This article contains a list of popular templates for building your Paladin in Diablo II: Resurrected.

1. Zealot Build

Zealot is the most common Paladin build in Diablo II. It relies on using Zeal to rapidly attack single or multiple enemies. The build is powered by offensive auras and elemental items.

Skills

  • Zeal (Max): The build won’t be called Zealot without this skill. Zeal lets you attack rapidly multiple times on a single enemy or multiples of them. Using Zeal also increases attack rating (accuracy), attack speed, and attack damage. Another good thing about Zeal is its very low mana cost (2 mana per use).
  • Sacrifice (Max): It gives synergy to Zeal. Max this skill to increase the damage of the Zeal period.
  • Fanaticism (Max): This skill increases your attack damage, attack speed, and attack rating. The aura increases your party’s damage, so allies will also benefit from this skill.
  • Holy Shield (Max): All Paladins should have this. This skill greatly increases defense and the chance to block. By the way, you can ignore learning Holy Shield if you're planning to use a two-handed melee weapon.
  • Charge (1 Skill Point): One point is enough to serve its purpose. That is for quickly closing the gap between your Paladin and your enemy.

Stat Points Distribution

  • Strength (120 Minimum – 190 if you're planning to wear high end equipment): Don’t expect suitable damage boosts from strength alone. The main purpose of distributing points here is for wearing more powerful equipment.
  • Dexterity (100 Minimum): Just put enough points to wear the necessary equipment.
  • Vitality (200 Minimum): Almost every stat point should be put here to increase your maximum life and stamina.
  • One-handed melee weapon with a shield or a two-handed melee weapon
  • All resistance
  • Add magic damage
  • Add fire/cold/lightning/poison damage
  • Equipment that automatically casts spells
  • Increase attack rating
  • Bonus to skill level
  • Bonus to attributes
  • Increase maximum life
  • Life stolen per hit
  • Enhanced damage
  • Enhanced defense
  • Faster run/walk
  • Cannot be frozen

2. Holy Shock Build

This is the most recommended offensive aura base build, especially for starters. This build is all about unleashing lightning base damage periodically to surrounding enemies.

Skills

  • Holy Shock (Max): This is your primary skill for the build. Although its minimum damage is low, the maximum damage is outstanding. Holy Shock periodically damages surrounding enemies with lightning. Massive lightning damage is also added to your attacks, which compliments with Zeal.
  • Resist Lightning (Max): Holy Shock receives synergy from this skill. Max this to greatly increase Holy Shock damage. Start distributing points in this skill at level 12 in preparation for your Holy Shock.
  • Salvation (Max): Holy Shock receives synergy from this skill. Max this to increase Holy Shock damage. Salvation is a good defensive aura for your party during Hell difficulty.
  • Zeal (Max): Zeal is your main physical damage dealer. It procs Holy Shock with each swing, letting you rapidly strike massive lightning damage. The main reason why you need to max this skill is to increase your attack rating (accuracy). At early levels, distributing four points in this skill is enough to pave the way for Holy Shock’s prerequisites at low level.
  • Holy Shield (Remaining Points): All Paladins should have this. This skill greatly increases defense and the chance to block.
  • Charge (1 Skill Point): This is a one-point gap closer.

Stat Points Distribution

  • Strength (120 minimum): Just put enough points for you to wear the necessary equipment.
  • Dexterity (130 minimum): Just put enough points for you to wear the necessary equipment. Put more if you need a higher attack rating and a chance to block.
  • Vitality (200 minimum): This is your main stat. Almost every stat point should be put here to increase your maximum life and stamina.
  • One-handed melee weapon
  • Shield
  • All resistance
  • Adds magic damage
  • Adds fire/cold/lightning/poison damage
  • Increase attack rating
  • Bonus to skill level
  • Bonus to attributes
  • Increase maximum life
  • Life stolen per hit
  • Enhanced damage
  • Enhanced defense
  • Faster run/walk
  • Cannot be frozen

3. Holy Freeze Build

This is a variant of the Holy Shock build. This build unleashes cold base damage periodically to surrounding enemies.

Skills

  • Holy Freeze (Max): This is your primary skill for the build. Although it does not deal as much damage as Holy Shock or Holy Fire, its ability to slow surrounding enemies makes it better for surviving mobs. Holy Freeze periodically deals cold damage to surrounding enemies and slows them down. Cold damage with slow is also added to your attacks. It is a good combination with Zeal.
  • Resist Cold (Max): Holy Freeze receives synergy from this skill. Max this to greatly increase Holy Freeze damage. Start distributing points in this skill at level 6 in preparation for your Holy Freeze.
  • Salvation (Max): Holy Freeze receives synergy from this skill. Max this to increase Holy Freeze damage. Salvation is a good defensive aura for your party during Hell difficulty.
  • Zeal (Max): Zeal is your main physical damage dealer. It procs Holy Freeze, making you rapidly strike cold damage with slow. The main reason why you need to max this skill is to increase your attack rating (accuracy). At early levels, distributing four points in this skill is enough.
  • Holy Shield (Remaining Points): All Paladins should have this. This skill greatly increases defense and the chance to block.
  • Charge (1 Skill Point): One point is enough to close the gap on enemies.

4. Holy Fire Build

Here is another variant of the Holy Shock build. This alternative build is all about unleashing fire base damage periodically to surrounding enemies.

Skills

  • Holy Fire (Max): This is your primary skill for the build. The damage of Holy Fire is more stable compared to Holy Shock and Holy Freeze. You can also have it unlocked as early as level six. Holy Fire periodically deals fire damage to surrounding enemies. Fire damage is also added to your attacks. It's a good combination with Zeal.
  • Resist Fire (Max): Holy Fire receives synergy from this skill. Max this to greatly increase Holy Fire damage.
  • Salvation (Max): Holy Fire receives synergy from this skill. Max this to increase Holy Fire damage. Salvation is a good defensive aura for your party during Hell difficulty.
  • Zeal (Max): Zeal is your main physical damage dealer. It procs Holy Fire that can make you rapidly strike stable fire damage. The main reason why you need to max this skill is to increase your attack rating (accuracy). At early levels, distributing four points in this skill is enough.
  • Holy Shield (Remaining Points): All Paladins should have this. This skill greatly increases defense and the chance to block.
  • Charge (1 Skill Point): One point is enough to serve its gap closing purpose.

5. Dragon Auradin Build

This is an overpowered variant of the Holy Fire build. The build’s key component is the attribute Holy Fire aura from Dragon Rune Word in body armor and shield. So this build is heavily reliant on items. It’s extremely powerful, though you need to make an effort in collecting the necessary items.

Skills

Note: Only distribute one point on Holy Fire for prerequisite purposes since the Dragon Rune Word will provide it.

  • Resist Fire (Max): Holy Fire receives synergy from this skill even if it’s from Dragon Rune Word. Max this to greatly increase Holy Fire damage.
  • Salvation (Max): Holy Fire receives synergy from this skill even if it’s from Dragon Rune Word. Max this to increase Holy Fire damage. Salvation is a good defensive aura for your party during Hell difficulty.
  • Conviction (Max): Conviction reduces the defense of surrounding enemies. It also reduces fire, cold, and lightning resistance. Ultimately, what I like about this skill is its ability to break enemy’s immunity. Combine this aura with Holy Fire and you can deal massive fire damage.
  • Holy Shield (Max): All Paladins should have this. This skill greatly increases defense and the chance to block.
  • Zeal (Remaining Points): Zeal can make you proc Holy Fire damage for each swing.
  • Charge (1 Skill Point): Your usual gap closer skill.

Stat Points Distribution

Same as the Holy Shock build.

  • Shield with Dragon Rune Word (Sur, Lo, Sol)
  • Armor with Dragon Rune Word (Sur, Lo, Sol)
  • One-handed melee weapon
  • All resistance
  • Adds magic damage
  • Adds fire/cold/lightning/poison damage
  • Increase attack rating
  • Bonus to skill level
  • Bonus to attributes
  • Increase maximum life
  • Life stolen per hit
  • Enhanced damage
  • Enhanced defense
  • Faster run/walk
  • Cannot be frozen

6. Dream Auradin Build

This is an overpowered variant of Holy Shock build. The build’s key component is the attribute Holy Shock aura from Dream Rune Word in both helm and shield. This build is heavily reliant on items, so you need to exert some effort in farming for the correct runes. But it’s all worth it once you’re able to unlock the Dream Rune Word’s overpowered damage.

Skills

Note: You should not waste any skill points on Holy Shock since Dream Rune Word will provide it.

  • Resist Lightning (Max): Holy Shock receives synergy from this skill even it’s from Dream Rune Word. Max this to greatly increase Holy Shock damage.
  • Salvation (Max): Holy Shock receives synergy from this skill even it’s from Dream Rune Word. Max this to increase Holy Shock damage. Salvation is a good defensive aura for your party during Hell difficulty.
  • Conviction (Max): Conviction reduces surrounding enemy’s defense as well as fire, cold, and lightning resistance. Ultimately, what I like about this skill is its ability to break enemy’s immunity. Combine this aura with Holy Shock and you’ll deal massive lightning damage.
  • Holy Shield (Max): All Paladins should have this. This skill greatly increases defense and the chance to block.
  • Zeal (Remaining Points): This is just like the other aura builds. Using Zeal is the most effective way in unleashing Holy Shock’s massive lightning damage.
  • Charge (1 Skill Point): This is a gap closer as usual.

  • Cannot be frozen

7. Doom Auradin Build

This is not as overpowered as the Dragon Rune Word or Dream Rune Word build, but its ability to slow opponents makes it reliable. This is a more powerful variant of the Holy Freeze build. The build’s key component is the attribute Holy Freeze aura from Doom Rune Word in melee weapons like axe, polearm, or hammer. This build is heavily reliant on items, and it needs some effort to farm the right runes. But the reward in the end is worth it.

Skills

  • Holy Freeze (Max): This is your primary skill for the build. Although it does not deal as much damage as Holy Shock or Holy Fire, its ability to slow surrounding enemies is very helpful for survivability. Holy Freeze periodically deals cold damage to surrounding enemies and slows them down. Cold damage with slow is also added to your attacks. It's a good combination with Zeal.
  • Resist Cold (Max): Holy Freeze receives synergy from this skill even it’s from Doom Rune Word. Max this to greatly increase Holy Freeze damage.
  • Salvation (Max): Holy Freeze receives synergy from this skill even it’s from Doom Rune Word. Max this to increase Holy Freeze damage. Salvation is a good defensive aura for your party during Hell difficulty.
  • Conviction (Max): Conviction reduces surrounding enemy’s defense as well as fire, cold, and lightning resistance. Ultimately, what I like about this skill is its ability to break enemy’s immunity. Combine this aura with Holy Freeze and you will deal massive cold damage.
  • Holy Shield (Remaining Points): All Paladins should have this. This skill greatly increases defense and the chance to block.
  • Zeal (Remaining Points): This is for unleashing Holy Freeze damage in a form of attack.
  • Charge (1 Skill Point): This is your level 1 gap closer.

Note: Distribute remaining skill points to both Holy Shield and Zeal based on your preference.

  • Enhanced defense
  • Faster run/walk
  • Cannot be frozen

8. Hybrid Auradin Build

This combines Holy Fire, Holy Shock, Holy Freeze, Conviction, and Defiance aura. This is the ultimate form of the Auradin build, but it's the hardest to farm since you’ll be needing rune words from Dragon, Dream, Doom, and Exile.

Skills

  • Salvation (Max): Holy Fire, Holy Freeze, and Holy Shock receives synergy from this skill even it’s from Dragon, Dream, and Doom Rune Word. Max this to increase Holy Fire, Holy Freeze, and Holy Shock damage. Salvation is a good defensive aura for your party during Hell difficulty.
  • Conviction (Max): Out of all Auradin builds, this hybrid one will benefit Conviction the most. Combine this aura with Holy Fire, Holy Freeze, Holy Shock, and you'll deal massive fire, cold, and lightning damage.
  • Holy Shield (Max): In addition, Holy Shield receives synergy to Defiance.
  • Zeal or Vengeance (Max): Choose Zeal if you want to inflict multiple blows with your three elemental auras. Choose Vengeance if you want to inflict solid elemental attacks.

  • Enhanced defense
  • Faster run/walk

9. Fist of the Heavens Paladin Build

This is one of the best Paladin builds for PVP (player vs player). This is a caster-type build.

Skills

  • Fist of the Heavens (Max): This is your primary skill for the build. FotH unleashes heavy lightning damage on single enemy. Once the enemy is struck by this skill, multiple Holy Bolts are released in random directions. These can heal party members or damage undead monsters. The skill always hits, and most opponents will be dead in one to three hits.
  • Holy Shock (Max): Greatly increases the lightning damage of Fist of the Heavens.
  • Conviction (Max): For breaking your enemy’s immunity if they have any. It can also make your FotH more deadly.
  • Holy Shield (Max): For increasing defense as usual.
  • Holy Bolt (1 Skill Points or Higher): Put a single skill point here for prerequisite purposes. Add more points if you're planning to use this skill. Holy Bolt heals target party members or greatly damages undead enemies. Leveling up this skill also increases the Holy Bolt of FotH.

  • Cannot be frozen

10. Avenger Build

This is the easiest build for dealing with monster immunities on higher difficulties. It inflicts fire, cold, and lightning damage on enemies thanks to Vengeance.

Skills

  • Vengeance (Max): This is your primary skill for the build. It inflicts fire, cold, and lightning damage with each successful hit. Your attack rating also increases when using Vengeance. Since this skill is mana hungry, don’t max it quickly in the early game. Level up resist auras first for damage increases.
  • Salvation (Max): Max this skill to increase elemental damage of Vengeance. Salvation is a good defensive aura for your party during Hell difficulty.
  • Resist Fire, Resist Cold, and Resist Lightning (13 Points for each skill): These three skills can greatly increase the damage of Vengeance. How I wish we had more skill points to max these three synergies.
  • Holy Shield (Remaining Skill Points): Ignore learning Holy Shield if you're planning to use two-handed melee weapons. The points can be put on resist aura skills.

Stat Points Distribution

Same as the Holy Shock build.

11. Support Paladin Build (AKA Priest)

This is the Paladin build that everybody loves to invite in their party. You can also invest on high defensive items to let this build tank for the party.

Skills

  • Holy Bolt (Max): With this skill, allies will like you and the undead will fear you. Holy Bolt heals target party members and greatly damages undead enemies.
  • Prayer (Max): The aura heals all party members at the expense of your mana. Max this skill to increase the power of Holy Bolt and to add healing effects while using Meditation.
  • Meditation (Max): This skill greatly increases mana regeneration for the whole party. Maxing Prayer adds a healing effect in this skill without mana cost.
  • Salvation (Max): This aura protects the whole party against harmful elemental damage. It's best used when you're on Hell difficulty.
  • Holy Shield (Remaining Skill Points): For a tankier build.

12. Hammerdin Build

Hammerdin is considered to be the most played overpowered Paladin build by pro players. The build excels in both PVP and PVM (player vs monster). The downside is that items are required to reach its full potential, and these are quite expensive. Playing this build also requires some practice in order to effectively hit enemies.

Skills

  • Blessed Hammer (Max): Blessed Hammer is the primary and iconic skill in this build. At full potential, Blessed Hammer can inflict a devastating 10,000 to 20,000 magic damage per hit. This skill requires some practice if you want to hit your opponents.
  • Vigor (Max): The skill gives synergy to Blessed Hammer. Level up this skill to greatly increase the magic damage of Blessed Hammer. Use Vigor to travel faster; this lets you explore maps in no time. The aura is also good for chasing or escaping. Your party will also benefit from this skill.
  • Blessed Aim (Max): The skill also gives synergy to Blessed Hammer. Just max this skill to greatly increase the magic damage of Blessed Hammer. But there’s no need to use this aura since Blessed Hammer always hits, so it doesn’t need the attack rating.
  • Concentration (Max): This aura further boosts the damage of Blessed Hammer when active. This skill is your main aura while using Blessed Hammer. Your party will benefit from it as well.
  • Holy Shield (Remaining Skill Points): Put point in here for an increase in defense and a chance to block.
