Introduction

This hub is going to talk about Cynthia, the second generation Pegasus Knight of Fire Emblem: Awakening, as well as Sumia's daughter. In canon, Chrom is Cynthia's father. As a Pegasus Knight Cynthia has above-average Resistance, and awesome Skill and Speed growths.

During the course of this hub, I will give my thoughts on details such as the best father for Cynthia and what skills she would most benefit from.

Overview

So, who is Cynthia?

Cynthia is Fire Emblem: Awakening's second generation Pegasus Knight. She is the daughter of Sumia (and Chrom, by canon) and is just as clumsy and flighty as her mother. She has a strong sense of justice and loves to play the role of hero, to oft-times hilarious effects. She is naïve to a point, but also has a sense of the world that her personality downplays (this is highlighted in certain supports where she realizes the implications of what her support partner is saying, although it would seem like something that would fly over her head, as most things tend to do with Cynthia).

Where can I get Cynthia?

Cynthia can be found in Paralogue 9, where she is working along a group of bandits after she is tricked by their leader who makes her believe that he is Chrom. Cynthia is one of only two child units that starts as an enemy (and the other, being Yarne, is only an enemy if you explicitly ally against his mercenary group). Have Chrom or Sumia talk to Cynthia and she will switch to your side. Just make sure that there are no archers nearby when you do so.

Why should I use Cynthia?

Well, if you do the canon pairing of Chrom x Sumia, then Cynthia will have Aether. You can then get her Galeforce via skill inheritance or Dark Flier (which actually brings up a rare case of where you might Sumia to pass another skill down to Cynthia given that she can go get Galeforce on her own time, but that's up to you).

Basically, she's pretty useful no matter who her father is (she only has five possible fathers).

Who's the best father for Cynthia?

Short answer: There's a reason why Chrom is the canon father.

Longer answer: I consider that Chrom is the best father for Cynthia. However, Frederick would do quite well in a pinch (and, in fact, could pass down Luna, which would be pretty cool for Cynthia). Gaius is pointless since his main use is passing down Pegasus Knight to a female child without the class and Cynthia's default class is Pegasus Knight. Henry could work if you decided you wanted to make Cynthia a Dark Mage (works better than you would imagine since Pegasus Knights tend to have non-trivial Magic growth rates). Male My Unit is a terrible idea since all you really get out of it is maximum possible class options on Cynthia, and that's a severe case of overkill.

Summary: Stick with the canon pairing for simplicity's sake. If you want to experiment, Frederick and Henry would make good fathers as well. I do not recommend male My Unit or Gaius as fathers for Cynthia.

The information in the above table plays into the following formula to determine Nah's true base stats for a specific given playthrough:

[(Mother's current stats - Mother's class base stats) + (Father's current stats - Father's class base stats) + Child's absolute base stats] / 3 + Child's class base stats

Note: Keep in mind that a child unit's base stats are generated when the Paralogue chapter is started. So, you'll want to train Nowi and her husband up (and place appropriate skills to pass on to Nah in the last active slot of each parent as well) before you enter Nah's chapter.

Should I use a Second Seal on Cynthia?

I personally wouldn't do so, since I like Pegasus Knights and their promotions, but you could always try a Dark Mage set up if Cynthia's bonus class options allow it.

What skills should I use on Cynthia?

  • Galeforce - Definitely a given.
  • Relief - I like to use Pegasus Knights to take out enemy stragglers. Relief lets Cynthia heal up for free without the need for Vulneraries or allied healers. You don't even have to work for this skill as Pegasus Knights get it at Level 10.
  • Aether - If Chrom is her father, this is also a given.

Those three skills are the core of Cynthia (feel free to replace Aether for Luna or Vengeance if applicable). You could consider going Bow Knight, if possible, at some point to get Bowbreaker, which will severely hinder one of the two Pegasus Knight's greatest weaknesses. Also, as mentioned before, Luna would be a pretty cool skill to have as well.

Looking For Some General Information Related To The Child Units?

No need to fear, I am here for you! I wrote up a hub detailing many general things about the various child units in Fire Emblem: Awakening. To check it out, just click on any part of this sentence!

Do you use Cynthia on your team?

Conclusion

In conclusion, Cynthia is the second generation Pegasus Knight of Fire Emblem: Awakening and Sumia's daughter. You may have noticed that this hub is decidedly shorter than most of the other child unit hubs. Well, it's partially due to the fact that Sumia has very few choices for husbands and the canon choice is actually the best choice, in the end. Cynthia will be an integral part of your army once she gets a few levels, and she can work both as an offensive powerhouse (Dark Flier) or you can turn her into a backup healer and staff user (Falcon Knight).

Feel free to talk about Cynthia and things related to her in the comments section. Also, don't hesitate to ask questions if something in this hub is unclear!

Until the next time, take care and have fun! ;)

For my personal preference Cynthia would be better with Renewall, also Pavise and Aegis (for reducing the arrow damage, and with no access to Lote shield) are a must have skills maybe not in all builds but they are very useful on her.

      I would say Counter, honestly.

While +20% crit rate is nice in a pinch (since it activates when HP dips below 50%), critical rates in Awakening are rather fickle in my experience. You can get better results from simply giving Cynthia a Killer Lance and watching the heads roll.

Counter, on the other hand, is always a fantastic skill thanks to the fact that it can often assist in a retaliation kill (killing an enemy during the enemy phase). Counter's benefits are also far more reliable than Wrath's, as Counter will always activate if anything within a 1 tile radius so much as breaths on you.

I used henry as father, but I haven't recruited her yet. I am still thinking wether to pass down Counter or Wrath from his father. What do you think? Which one is better?

Because having both active at the same time is a waste of a slot. It's better to swap out Relief for something better.

The best set of skills (in my opinion) for a Lancer* Cynthia (Falcon Knight) is Limit Breaker, Renewal, Galeforce, Iote's Shield, and Aether. Of course

*(By Lancer, I mean a character who is built to spear ahead of the group, charge behind enemy lines, and eliminate specific targets while still coming back alive).

I think Relief and Renewal stack so why not take both?

      Thanks, FE11.

Another thing that's worth doing is taking her through War Cleric for Renewal. Renewal is superior to Relief not only because it recovers 30% HP (as opposed to Relief's 20%), but also because it always works. Relief, meanwhile, requires there to be no units within 3 spaces to activate.

Granted, Cynthia works best by charging forward, killing off a dangerous foe (Archers or Wind mages if you've got Iote's Shield), and then using Galeforce to retreat back to safety. In that case, Renewal is just more potent, but I still like having characters capable of "holding the line" in any situation, so Renewal all the way!

Brandon, you read my mind! Sure it's a tough fight for it, but you only need to do it like 10 times and you'll be set.

Personally, I would find it much more worthwhile to give Cynthia Iote's Shield if you have the necessary DLC, as opposed to get Bowbreaker through Bow Knight.

Rather than simply weakening *one* of the two Pegasus Knight weakness (like Bowbreaker), Iote's Shield completely eliminates both outright. Overpowered? Maybe. Worth it? Definitely :D

if you don't mind having one less pegasus knight on your team, cynthia as a general is actually really good, especially if you grind for renewal and pavise. the stat cap for defense is around 48, which is complemented with a pretty hefty 36 in resistance
