Introduction

This hub is going to talk about Gerome, Cherche's son and the second generation Wyvern Rider of Fire Emblem: Awakening. Gerome is one of the three male child units that has no access to Galeforce which, combined with his low Resistance, can make him more of a liability than an asset. Even so, this article is up for those of you who wish to try to use Gerome in spite of that.

During the course of this hub, I will give my thoughts on details such as the best father for Gerome and what skills he would most benefit from.

Overview

So, who is Gerome?

Gerome is Cherche's son and the second generation Wyvern Rider of Fire Emblem: Awakening. He rides Cherche's Wyvern Minerva and is perhaps the most fatalistic of all of the child units. The constant death and suffering that his future has endured has hardened him and brought him to the brink of quitting. In fact, he makes a point of explaining in some early support conversations that he was in the valley where you find and recruit him because he was going to leave Minerva there to live amongst others of her own kind and just walk away from everything. He doesn't want to develop any bonds in the present because he doesn't want to have to lose anyone he cares about ever again.

Where can I get Gerome?

Gerome is present in Paralogue 11, where he is deciding whether or not to help a group of people survive in the midst of a bandit attack at Wyvern Valley.

Why should I use Gerome?

Truth be told, in my playthrough, I only used Gerome as support for Cynthia since they're both fliers (and subsequently had them marry; the whole support conversation line between them is cute and silly). The problem with Gerome is that he is a flier with low Resistance, which means he crumples like paper to Wind Tomes. He's better at taking arrow damage than Cynthia is, but that's not a tall order. Also, having the Dragon Type makes him vulnerable to Wyrmslayers.

All in all, I find him to be completely mediocre and uninspiring. At least Cherche had the decency to be the third axe user (second if you made Donnel a Mercenary) you could recruit during the course of the game. By the time you get Gerome under normal circumstances, you should either have a bunch of axe users, or not have to care as much about the weapon triangle.

Anyway, while I personally don't like Gerome, it wouldn't be fair to cut this hub short, since opinions are just that: opinions. So, let's keep going!

Who is the best father for Gerome?

Just like that, it's time for the most important question one has to ask regarding any child unit. Well, let's get started:

Units whose names are bolded are recommended for reasons listed in their bullet, and will be represented in the table in the next section listing Inigo's growths as based on potential fathers.

  • Ricken, Libra, Henry - These three potential fathers have high Magic growths and open up Magic-based options for their children. Gerome has terrible Magic growth, so I wouldn't recommend any of these units as parents for Gerome.
  • Gaius, Donnel, Male My Unit - They're best used to pass down Pegasus Knight to a female child unit that does not naturally get it.
  • Lon'qu - Wyvern Riders are styled as the high Strength/Defense, lower Speed, low Resistance counterparts to Pegasus Knights. Having Lon'qu as Gerome's father would undermine this paradigm completely, seeing as how Lon'qu has bad Defense and average Strength.
  • Frederick - I suppose you could. I mean, Frederick's growths benefit Gerome a lot. However, you'll have to grind a lot more to get Frederick up to specs, or your Gerome's lower base stats will basically null most or all of the benefit of having those growths in the first place.
  • Virion - Grants Archer and Mage, and Gerome has awful Magic growths. Yet, there's something so fitting about Cherche x Virion that I couldn't help myself during my initial playthrough. Use at your own risk.
  • Stahl - Grants Cavalier, Archer, and Myrmidon. A much better pick for Gerome than Virion, based on bonus class options alone. Stahl's growths are also beneficial to Gerome's base class of Wyvern Rider.
  • Vaike - Grants Barbarian and Thief. Given Vaike's natural stat growth focus on Strength and Defense, he would serve as a good parent for Gerome.
  • Kellam - Grants Knight and Thief. Given that Kellam offers a wider range of bonus classes to certain child units, I can't particularly recommend him as a parent to Gerome.
  • Gregor - Grants Myrmidon and Barbarian. Given that I usually recommend against Gregor as a parent due to the low amount of bonus classes that he can pass down, he actually fits in neatly as Gerome's father since most other male parents are hard-pressed to give more than two bonus classes to Gerome.

The information in the above table plays into the following formula to determine Gerome's true base stats for a specific given playthrough:

[(Mother's current stats - Mother's class base stats) + (Father's current stats - Father's class base stats) + Child's absolute base stats] / 3 + Child's class base stats

Note: Keep in mind that a child unit's base stats are generated when the Paralogue chapter is started. So, you'll want to train Cherche and her husband up (and place appropriate skills to pass on to Gerome in the last active slot of each parent as well) before you enter Gerome's chapter.

Should I use a Second Seal on Gerome?

There's no real reason to switch Gerome to any other class unless you want Vantage/Astra or Lifetaker. The only real use I can see for a Second Seal on Gerome is to class change to Griffon Rider at some point to grab Lancebreaker. In fact, it'd be a good idea to level up Gerome as a Griffon Rider and then class change to Wyvern Lord, since the caps on Wyvern Lord are more in line with Gerome's growths.

What skills should I use on Gerome?

  • Tantivy - Gerome starts with this skill and, while I tend to dislike skills that only work when a unit is alone, fliers do tend to find themselves in solitary positions more often than most. The extra Avoid in such a case is always helpful.
  • Swordbreaker, Lancebreaker - They allow Gerome to get boosted Avoid rates against many of Fire Emblem: Awakening's most common enemy units.
  • Deliverer - Getting an additional two movement when Paired Up with an allied unit is pretty good. Widely considered one of the best skills in the game for that alone.

Anything else is up to you. I feel that those four skills would provide a good baseline for Gerome though.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Gerome is the second generation Wyvern Rider of Fire Emblem: Awakening and Cherche's son. Gerome's viability is dampened by the fact that he does not have Galeforce and by the fact that his low Resistance makes him particularly vulnerable to Mages (especially those with Wind Tomes). Gerome is definitely not one of the best child units. However, he will easily surpass his mother given a fair amount of time (especially if you train Cherche and her husband beforehand).

Feel free to talk about Gerome and things related to him in the comments section. Also, don't hesitate to ask questions if something in this hub is unclear!

Until the next time, take care and have fun! ;)

just to share some opinion, i actually married cherche to henry and have him pass tomebreaker, and it works wonders with him as a tank unit at hard.. i don't know though in lunatic it can be different, but IMO having henry as a father actually helps a bit regarding his resistance

The real reason you should use Gerome:

      Because he's freaking Nightwing!!!

Hey Brandon, if you want to see Gerome as Nightwing, google fire emblem what if fanfiction, and then check chapter six of the story.

      A point in Gregor's favor.

He passes Mercenary in addition to Myrmidon and Barbarian.

This means Gerome can get Armsthrift, as well as access to Bow Knight for Bow Breaker to give him help with archers.

I strongly disagree on him being a liability. Gerome is a tank in my games. It sucks he can't get galeforce, but he's an amazingly powerful character, even with low resitance. Besides, you can train him until he caps his resistance - though it takes a while. Also, if one picks Henry or Libra as his father, his resistance also grows.

However, the fact that his resistance is so low does make it hard for him to battle a lot of magic users at the same time, but pairing him up with someone else helps against that risk.

Imo Freddy!Gerome is the best tank ever...you could make him the best support unit with DS+ and DG+ passed from his parents, or you could make him a supercool General build. Take Frederick and give him Aegis, then have Cherche pass Deliverer, and make Gerome a General. PavGis AND a high-move tank, yes please. Or, you could even put Gerome through Griffon Rider, have him grab Deliverer, and have Cherche pass Lancebreaker. Best use then for this Gerome is to pair him with a heavy-hitting GF user who's a little squishy, have them take a kill, and then use GF to switch out for a defensive wall.
