Fire Emblem: Awakening Units - Say'ri Info

Introduction

This hub is going to talk about Say'ri, the Swordmaster that you get in Fire Emblem: Awakening. Swordmasters are promoted Myrmidons and, as such, have the same growth patterns (with a bonus 5% to their Resistance growth being the lone difference). Thus, Swordmasters have average Strength growths and great Skill and Speed growths but low Defense growths (although, in Say'ri's case, she has a decent 40% Defense growth).

She is the fourth-to-last first generation unit that you recruit in Fire Emblem: Awakening, and the first one to have almost no possible supports (she can support My Unit and Tiki and can only marry male My Unit).

One would presume that Say'ri has a possible support with Yen'fay (him being her brother and all), but his Paralogue chapter isn't playable yet outside of Japan, so only time will tell.

Overview

So, who is Say'ri?

Say'ri is the leader of the Resistance being formed on the continent of Valm to oppose Walhart, the Conqueror. Her main character traits are her sense of honor and duty and her respect for her allies. In game terms, Say'ri is a Swordmaster, which is a promoted Myrmidon. As such, much of what was said in Lon'qu's hub will also apply here.

Where can I get Say'ri?

Say'ri starts Chapter 15 as an allied unit being pursued by some of Walhart's forces who corner her and intend to kill her in short order. As she starts with only a Concoction to her name, this will likely happen sooner than later if you do not intervene. Given her precarious starting position, I highly recommend that you bring a unit capable of using a Rescue staff (and, this is one case where having a lot of Magic will do wonders as Say'ri is almost literally in the middle of enemy hordes and you don't want to over-extend your Rescue staff user just to save her). Have Chrom talk to Say'ri once she is out of harm's way and she will join your party. Just fetch a sword from the Convoy for her and you should be golden.

Why should I use Say'ri?

Well, Say'ri starts at Level 1 Swordmaster at a stage in the game where she would not experience leech. However, her low amount of possible supports means that she is a crutch character by default. She is not as blatant as Frederick in that she is not overpowered for the stage of the game in which she debuts, but she does have great base stats and above-average growths. This means that, on average, she should be one of the top performers in your army. Heck, she has greater Defense growths than Lon'qu (although Lon'qu does have sixteen more total levels to work with).

Basically (and this is only my opinion), Say'ri was most likely added in by the design team of Fire Emblem: Awakening to serve as a crutch for players who are playing Classic and have lost a lot of units throughout the course of the storyline (the last three recruitable characters of the first generation also follow this same template of few supports but high base stats and good growths, so I believe my theory is plausible).

Should I use a Second Seal on Say'ri?

Well, if you're not adverse to grinding (and even if you are, Say'ri appears after the child paralogues start appearing should you have married couples so you can level her up in those), Say'ri can become a Dark Flier, and we all know what nasty skill Dark Fliers get that works for just about every other class that can attack (Galeforce).

This is a list of the stat growths of every single class that Say'ri can become. [Source: Serenes Forest]

As noted already, Say'ri has great Skill and Speed growths. In addition, her Strength and Defense are respectable for a Swordmaster (as noted already, Say'ri has greater Defense growth than Lon'qu does). This, combined with her extremely high base Skill and Speed actually make her a viable member of your army. I would have used her on a more consistent basis had she actually had more than two supports but, as it is, other units in your army will probably benefit more from the exposure.

As a Swordmaster, Say'ri starts with both Avoid+10 and Vantage (having promoted from Myrmidon). As noted in the Lon'qu hub, Avoid+10 is a good stat bonus that increases the unit's survivability by making them harder to hit and Vantage is pretty darn good. Getting the first attack if your HP is at half or lower can be the difference between staying alive to fight another day and kicking the bucket, so to speak.

After promotion, Say'ri will learn Astra and Swordfaire, the first of which allows you to hit five consecutive times for half damage (so you do 2.5x times your regular damage in total), and the second of which is one of the "-faire" skills that boosts damage by 5 for a relevant weapon (in this case, Swords).

Tips and Tricks for using Say'ri

  • As a Swordmaster, you'll want to keep Say'ri near the front lines for best effect. However, her below average Defense will probably require that you have a healer nearby (not that you should ever set up a major formation that will see plentiful combat without a healer anyway, but people have done weirder things before).
  • Say'ri's low amount of total supports make her a good candidate for killing off straggler enemies by herself, or by way of being paired up with a unit who has most of their major supports already completed.
  • For best results, you might consider equipping Say'ri with a Killer Edge to better exploit her massive base Skill stat.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Say'ri is the lone Swordmaster that you can recruit in Fire Emblem: Awakening. While she has great base stats and an adequate starting level that will allow vast improvement thanks to her good growths, she has few supports to speak of, which diminishes the effectiveness of using her in a Pair Up setting. For the reasons listed above, I consider she is more of a crutch character for those people who have taken major casualties in their Classic Mode playthrough and need some reinforcements.

Feel free to talk about Say'ri and things related to her in the comments section. Also, don't hesitate to ask questions if something in this hub is unclear!

Until the next time, take care and have fun! ;)
