"Fire Emblem: Awakening" Units - Stahl Info

I've been playing video games since the tender age of four. As a result, most of my articles are related to video games.

Introduction

This article is going to talk about Stahl, the second of two Cavaliers that you will get in Fire Emblem Awakening. Cavaliers are a fairly balanced class that rides on horseback and uses lances and swords. Stahl is the Green Cavalier to Sully's Red Cavalier, and features greater growths on HP, Strength and Defense than Sully does.

During the course of this article, I will give an overview of Stahl, his base stats, his base growths, skill list and other aspects.

So, let's get started!

Looking for the Red Cavalier?

Well, I have also written up an article for Sully, who is the first Cavalier you get in Fire Emblem Awakening. If you want to read up on her and haven't done so already, click on any part of this sentence!

Overview

So, who is Stahl?

Stahl is the Green Cavalier of Chrom's Ylissean Guard, making him the counterpart to Sully, whom you recruit a chapter earlier. In contrast to Sully, Stahl is more quiet and calm. In fact, it's a rare occurrence to see Stahl anger. In game terms, Stahl is Fire Emblem Awakening's second Cavalier, and the one more geared towards attacking physically and defending against the same.

Where can I get Stahl?

Stahl makes an appearance in your army at the start of Chapter 2 (a time frame he shares with Vaike; Miriel joins in Chapter 2 as well, but a bit later).

Why should I use Stahl?

For many of the same reasons you would use Sully, given that they are the same class. Basically, Cavaliers are really balanced, and Stahl (slightly more so than Sully) is geared towards fighting off Strength-based threats, which makes him quite useful at the start of the game, when enemy Mages are at a premium.

Who is better, Stahl or Sully?

If you've read my article on Sully, you can probably predict my answer here. If you haven't, the answer is that I'm not giving you a straight answer! Seriously, it's for your own good. You're doing the two of them a disservice if you don't use them in tandem, so perish the thought of trying to pick favorites to bench the other!

Well, since you've probably read that response twice by now, here's a straight answer: Stahl is slightly better than Sully against physical threats, and Sully is slightly better against magical threats. Given a little random number generator nudging, they're just about equal overall.

Should I use a Second Seal on Stahl?

No, I didn't recommend it on Sully, and I don't recommend it for Stahl either. Cavalier will serve him well, and then he can promote to Paladin or Great Knight later on. I use him as a Paladin.

So, does Stahl make a better Paladin or Great Knight?

Well, as I mention in the Sully info article, it depends on whether you want to maximize or compensate for his growths. Since Stahl has the opposite focus of Sully, the way to be most efficient with his growths is to make him a Great Knight. However, if you want to compensate for his growth deficiencies, you can make him a Paladin. It's all up to you what you want to do. However, if you're going to have Sully and Stahl marry, you can have one of them become a Paladin and other become a Great Knight.

Shorter answer: Great Knight is slightly better for Stahl.

In the same vein as Sully (which is unsurprising given that they share the same base class), Stahl gains his highest Defense growths from staying as a Cavalier. However, unlike Sully, he can become an Archer (Sully gets to mount Wyverns instead). Since you have Virion I can't recommend that you class change Stahl into an Archer, but it is an option if you really wish to do so.

As you can see from the table above, you can't really go wrong with either of the promotion choices for Cavalier. I prefer Aegis to Luna, mind you, since I prefer defensive skills to offensive skills. However, you can't be faulted if you wish to make Stahl a Great Knight (it is statistically the better choice after all).

Tips and Tricks for Using Stahl

  • Pair him up with Sully. Just do it. They play off of each other pretty well, giving a healthy spread of stats to the main unit when they are the support unit.
  • Cavaliers have a lot of movement, so they're good for forming an advance unit to seize a chokepoint before it is overrun by enemies.
  • Make sure you always use the right weapon for the job. Cavaliers have two weapon types, so it's fairly easy to exploit the weapon triangle to your advantage.

As is my usual habit, it's time to list the final table of this article, wherein I mention what supports Stahl can have. It goes without saying that the following table will be spoilers if you have just started playing Fire Emblem Awakening. In that case, feel free to skip ahead to the conclusion.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Stahl deserves a spot in your team alongside Sully. Cavaliers are a well-balanced class that can do lots of things, so for that reason alone I personally like to use them (they are my second-favorite base class in Fire Emblem Awakening, to be honest).

Feel free to talk about Stahl and things related to him in the comments section. Also, don't hesitate to ask questions if something in this article is unclear!

Until the next time, take care and have fun!

Making him a Swordmaster will bring up his speed growth and get Astra and Swordfaire

Actually, I used a second seal on Stahl and made him an archer. After that, I promoted him to sniper, then reclassed into an assassin. It was a sight to behold ;-;

after being blinded by sully's glory i never gave stahl even a glance and i've never used him in battle and after reading about how good they are together i'm definitely regretting it.

Nice work. I didn't know what class to choose for him, but I think I'll try Great Knight after getting his speed up via Myrmidon. :)
