Genshin Impact is an open-world action role-playing gacha game in which you play as one character at a time on a team of four to complete an overarching main quest and various side quests. While obtaining and leveling up various synergistic characters is the most important aspect to progress through the game, equipping, upgrading, and leveling up appropriate weapons can have a huge impact on the power of your characters.
Weapons can be obtained in various ways. 5-star weapons are received through gacha. 4-star weapons are obtained through gacha, completing events or quests, crafting at a blacksmith, or purchasing through the Starglitter Exchange in Paimon's Bargains Shop. 3-star weapons are junk gacha pulls or dropped by monsters or chests, and 2- and 1-star weapons are found in monster and chest drops.
Weapons provide several benefits to a character. All of them increase your character's ATK stat. 3-star and above weapons also provide another stat bonus that differs depending on the weapon. This can include ATK%, Elemental Mastery, Energy Recharge%, Physical DMG Bonus, HP%, CRIT DMG%, DEF% and CRIT Rate. In addition, 3-star and above weapons provide a bonus benefit that differs depending on the weapon and can be improved by combining identical weapons through a process called Refinement, described below.
Leveling up weapons boosts their stat benefits, both the flat bonus to base ATK and the extra stat bonus. It is a pretty quick but powerful process, provided that you have the necessary materials and Mora (in-game currency). Here I will describe how to easily level up your weapons to boost your characters to their maximum capabilities.
How to Access Weapon Upgrade Screen
There are two ways to access the Weapon Upgrade screen.
- Click on Inventory (backpack icon at the top right of the screen). The first tab is the Weapons tab. Choose the weapon you wish to upgrade and click Details on the bottom right.
- Click on Character (head icon at the top right of the screen). Select the character whose weapon you wish to upgrade on the bar at the left-hand side. Click Weapons and then choose Enhance on the bottom right. (Alternatively, click Switch to choose a different weapon for the character.)
The Weapon Upgrade screen will pop up looking like the image below.
On the left-hand side of the screen, you will see 3 options. The first option is Details, which provides a summary of the weapon's stats and effects and allows you to read the description of the weapon (the same summary you would see in the Inventory/Weapon or Character/Weapons screen). The second option will either be Enhance or Ascend, which I will explain in more detail below. The third option is Refine.
What is Weapon Refinement?
The Refine option allows you to upgrade the rank of a weapon's ability. You will see the current ability and the next rank of that ability, with changes shown in teal text. To Refine your weapon, you must select an identical weapon which will be destroyed to improve your current one and pay a negligible amount of Mora. 4- and 5-star weapons will need to be unlocked in the Weapon screen before they can be used to Refine a weapon. You do not need to unlock the weapon you are Refining. A weapon can be Refined to rank 5. Each Refinement requires the destruction of one identical weapon.
How to Raise a Weapon to Max Level
Upgrading a weapon to max level requires a combination of Enhancing and Ascending the weapon. Enhance allows you to raise the level of the weapon up to a cap. Ascend allows you to raise the level cap.

The level caps are 20, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, and 90 (max level).
Weapons can be Enhanced using other weapons (there is an auto add feature for 1- to 3-star weapons to clear inventory room), but you will primarily use Enhancement Ore (circled in red above). You can see these options by clicking on the plus icon. There are 3 types of Enhancement Ore: Mystic, Fine, and normal. Mystic Enhancement Ore provides 10,000 weapon EXP, Fine Enhancement Ore provides 2,000 weapon EXP, and Enhancement Ore provides 400 weapon EXP. How to obtain Enhancement Ore is discussed later.
Once you reach enough weapon EXP to hit the level cap, you will no longer be able to select more enhancement materials. Try not to go over the cap too much to conserve materials.
Weapon Enhancement also costs Mora. The cost is 10% of the weapon EXP provided by the enhancement materials.
Once your weapon hits the level cap, you will need to Ascend it. This requires using weapon ascension materials and a significant amount of Mora.
However, some character talents can reduce the amount of Mora required. For instance, as shown below, Raiden Shogun reduces the amount of Mora required to ascend Swords and Polearms by 50%.
You can also click on the Ascension Material Preview button before hitting max level, as shown below, to see what ascension materials you will need.
How to Obtain Enhancement Ore
Enhancement Ore can be obtained in a variety of ways, including chest drops, quest rewards, and event rewards. You can also receive a limited quantity of Enhancement Ore at a blacksmith in exchange for crystals, as shown below.
First click on "I'd like something made." This text will be yellow if items you asked to be forged are ready to pick up. Then you have the option to forge the three types of Enhancement Ore, as shown below. You can also forge weapons or other items if you have the prerequisites.
Enhancement Ore can be forged from Iron Chunks. It costs 2 Iron Chunks and 5 Mora per 1 Enhancement Ore, and forging takes 3 seconds. You can forge 20 Enhancement Ore in one stack.
Fine Enhancement Ore can be forged from White Iron Chunks. It costs 3 White Iron Chunks and 10 Mora per 1 Fine Enhancement Ore, and forging takes 6 seconds. You can forge 10 Fine Enhancement Ore in one stack.
Mystic Enhancement Ore can be forged from Crystal Chunks, Amethyst Lumps, or Magical Crystal Chunks. It costs 4 Crystal Chunks or Amethyst Lumps and 50 Mora per 1 Mystic Enhancement Ore, and forging takes 3 minutes. You can forge 5 Mystic Enhancement Ore in one stack. You can only forge 30 Mystic Enhancement Ore total from Crystal Chunks or Amethyst Lumps in one day. I would thus recommend forging the maximum number of Mystic Enhancement Ore in this way every day as long as you have Crystal Chunks or Amethyst Lumps to ensure a good supply for enhancing your weapons.
Using Magical Crystal Chunks to forge Mystic Enhancement Ore works slightly differently because it also requires Original Resin. It costs 3 Magical Crystal Chunks, 10 Original Resin, and 100 Mora per 6 Mystic Enhancement Ore, and forging takes 5 seconds. In addition to Mystic Enhancement Ore, you also receive 50 Adventure EXP and 10 Companionship EXP. There is no limit to the number you can forge in a day, but keep in mind that you are limited by Original Resin, which recovers slowly over time. Since Original Resin is also required to complete challenges to receive artifacts, weapon ascension materials, talent level-up materials, character EXP materials, and Mora, I would recommend only forging Mystic Enhancement Ore in this way on days when you don't have time to complete challenges.
How to Obtain Crystals
Crystals can be obtained by finding deposits when exploring the world. The easiest way to find these deposits is by talking to a blacksmith. If you click the dialogue option with the exclamation point ("Any tips on finding ore in Monstadt?" or "About Liyue's mining products..." or "Do you have any information about Inazuman ores?"), the location of ore deposits with Magical Crystals (and either Crystals or Amethysts) will be shown on your map, as shown below.
Alternatively (or in addition), you can wander around looking for ore deposits. Ningguang's talent helps significantly with this, since when she is in your party, the location of nearby ore deposits is shown on your mini-map.
Once you locate ore deposits, you need to destroy the crystals to be able to pick up the chunks. Claymores and Geo skills do the most damage to ores and therefore should be used for quick farming.
How to Obtain Ascension Materials
Ascension materials needed to Ascend your weapons can be obtained through challenges, monster drops, and shops. To determine where to find a particular weapon ascension material, you can click on it on the Weapon Ascension screen. This will display a description of the material and sources, as shown below.
To Ascend a weapon, you need three ascension materials. One is specific to weapon ascension, and the other two are also used for character enhancement. The one only used in weapon ascension is obtained from domain challenges that require Original Resin. These domain challenges alternate depending on the day of the week. You can see which are currently available in your Adventurer Handbook. You can also get a limited number of basic materials from souvenir shops. The other materials used for both characters and weapons are obtained from monster drops or Paimon's Bargains shops.
If you have lower tier materials but need higher tier materials, you can upgrade these at a crafting table, shown below.
It takes 3 lower tier materials (and some Mora) to craft 1 higher tier material. Keep an eye on which character you use to perform the crafting as some provide benefits. Kamisato Ayaka has a 10% chance to receive double the product of weapon ascension materials, and Sucrose has a 10% chance to receive double the product of character and weapon ascension materials.
By obtaining all the materials you'll need for Enhancement and Ascension, you'll have your weapons maxed out in no time!
