Whether you're looking to optimize your character or just want them to look cool, armor is a staple of the Souls universe. Tricking out a warrior with appropriate attire (or wholly inappropriate attire) is part of the experience, and there are many pieces of armor that you can mix and match to create your ideal fighter.

This guide will help you locate and seize all of the armor sets in Demon's Souls. A lot of them are character-specific, so you may need to get your hands dirty if you want them all.

Ancient King's Set

Location: Boletarian Palace, Gates of Boletaria

Price: None

The Ancient King's Set belongs to Old King Doran, who is locked away in his mausoleum, atop the castle walls. You'll find the mausoleum on the other side of a Red-Eye Knight who is far too powerful for this early area.

Opening the mausoleum requires acquiring the Mausoleum Key from Ostrava, an NPC who travels between all four areas of Boletarian Palace. You can get the key from him by saving him in each area, or, if you want it more quickly, by killing him before he reaches The King's Tower (World 1-4).

Old King Doran is a powerful warrior who can easily kill you. Your initial battle is not to the death, and you'll need to keep attacking him after he yields to collect the armor set from his corpse.

Barbarian Set

Location: Various

Price: 650 Souls

A set that offers no protective qualities and is for those who want a challenge. The Barbarian set is sold by both Patches the Hyena and Graverobber Blige.

  • Blige is found on the Island's Edge in the Shrine of Storms (World 4-1), locked in a cell behind and beneath the Vanguard Demon. You can find a Copper Key to free him by going through the passage to your left upon entering the first fog door, going up and over the wall, and back down through the far tower. The Key is at the bottom. Blige will move to a more obvious location near the beginning of the Ritual Path (World 4-2) once you complete Island's Edge.
  • Patches is found in either The Tunnel City (World 2-2) or the Ritual Path. You'll find him in The Tunnel City by taking a left at the first juncture from the first Archstone, proceeding past the elevator, and entering a lava-filled, platform-filled area. Patches is far below, and you can reach him by falling from platform to platform. You can find him in the Ritual Path by proceeding to the first Reaper, then checking the base of the Reaper's platform for a small room. If Patches isn't in one spot, he's in the other. Defeat his traps to send him to the Nexus and turn him into a merchant.

Binded Cross Set

Location: Boletarian Palace, Gates of Boletaria

Price: None

The Binded Cross set is worn by Executioner Miralda, a fanatical warrior who skulks in an area of the Gates of Boletaria that you can't initially reach. In order to get to Miralda you need to get Boletarian Palace to White World Tendency, either by killing the bosses of the area (defeating a dragon or two will help) or killing invaders.

Read More From Levelskip

Once you've reached White World Tendency you'll unlock a door ahead and to the left of the starting Archstone. Go through and, after fighting some weak Black Phantoms, you'll face off against Miralda. Kill her to receive the armor set. She's an aggressive fighter, but not too difficult if you're coming here later in the game.

Black Leather Set

Location: Tower of Latria, Prison of Hope

Price: None

The starting set for the Thief class, the Black Leather set can be found by everyone else on the fourth level of the Prison of Hope. Partway through the area's mandatory path you'll come to a room with a hole in the rear wall. This first room has two iron maidens in it. Check the iron maiden on the left for the set.

Blue-Eye Knight Set

Location: Boletarian Palace

Price: None

A dangerous set that you'll see on far too many nasty enemies during your trip through Boletarian Palace. The Blue-Eye Knight set is found in pieces throughout Boletarian Palace, and you'll have to search high and low to find all four pieces:

  • The Helm is in the Gates of Boletaria (World 1-1). Achieve White World Tendency, then check the locked door to the left of the introductory staircase that leads to the Phalanx boss fight. The door will be open, and you can find the Helm along the cliff's edge in the next small area.
  • The Cuirass is on the Lord's Path (World 1-2). Once you reach the first guard tower, descend into the wall and take a left. Past a few Dreglings you'll reach a dead end. The Cuirass is here. (If you saved Ostrava in the Gates of Boletaria he'll be near the Cuirass, and you'll need to kill some bowmen as well.)
  • The Gauntlets are in the Inner Ward (World 1-3). Soon after entering this area the gate of the main thoroughfare will be locked, and you'll have to take a right down an alleyway, past several guards. Go down the stairs ahead, past a guard and an assassin. When you reach the bottom you'll see the Gauntlets straight ahead.
  • The Greaves are in the King's Tower (World 1-4). A short way into the Tower you'll reach a dangerous ascent filled with bowmen, assassins, and Red-Eye Knights. Battle your way to the top. Just before you exit onto the pathway that's regularly bathed in dragon flame you can turn left. A ladder up here leads to a shortcut you can unlock later. Across from the closed door are the Greaves.

Boletarian Royalty Set

Location: Nexus

Price: None

The set for Boletarians with a great deal of coin to their name. The Boletarian Royalty set is available only to purchasers of the Demon's Souls digital deluxe bonus edition. Speak to Stockpile Thomas in the Nexus and the set will be among his wares.

(As of now you can't upgrade from the normal version of Demon's Souls if you want this set, so you'll need to buy the game over again.)

Brushwood Set

Location: Boletarian Palace, Gates of Boletaria

Price: 250,000 Souls

The signature armor of Biorr of the Twin Fangs, the Brushwood Set can be obtained three different ways:

  • Get Biorr to The King's Tower, then make it inside before he is killed by the dragon. The Dregling Merchant will have the set available for sale the next time you see him.
  • Kill Biorr, or be around him when he dies (to the Penetrator or the Blue Dragon). He'll drop the armor set.
  • Check Executioner Miralda's side area in the Gates of Boletaria (World 1-1, to the left of the entry Archstone). The armor set is at the bottom of a very deep pit, accessible by a ladder. You'll need to get Boletarian Palace to White World Tendency before this area opens.

The first two methods require finding Biorr. Proceed through the Inner Ward of Boletarian Palace (World 1-3) until you find a Fat Official and a small group of bowmen. The Fat Official carries an Iron Key Ring. Take it back to the Inner Ward Archstone and check the locked door just outside the entrance to the Iron King's battle arena. Biorr is in here, guarded by another Fat Official.

Burrower's Set

Location: Stonefang Tunnel, The Tunnel City

Price: None

A look for miners, albeit ones who don't mind getting their arms burned off by lava. The Burrower's set is located in the deepest depths of The Tunnel City (World 2-2), alongside a river of lava filled with nasty fire beasts. The set is sitting along the path you need to traverse to reach the tunnel out of here.

Chain Mail Set

Location: Valley of Defilement, Depraved Chasm / Swamp of Sorrow

Price: 12,000 Souls

The starting armor set of the Priest class, the Chain Mail Set is sold by the Filthy Woman in the Valley of Defilement. You'll find her about halfway through the Depraved Chasm, in a small chamber near the horde of rats that inflict Plague with their bites. If you've moved on to the Swamp of Sorrow she's instead just inside the entrance of the tent city that comprises the second half of the area.

Dark Silver Set

Location: Valley of Defilement, Rotting Haven

Price: None

The signature look of Garl Vinland, the Dark Silver set is dropped by the Maiden Astraea's stalwart protector. You'll find him blocking the path to his beloved Archdemon at the very end of the Valley of Defilement, and you'll likely need to kill him to get to her. If you manage to kill Astraea from afar with arrows Garl Vinland will give up, and when you next visit the area he'll be gone, leaving the armor set behind where he once stood.

This armor can only be worn by male characters.

Dull Gold Set

Location: Valley of Defilement, Swamp of Sorrow

Price: None

Worn by Garl Vinland's sister Selen, the Dull Gold set is found in one of two ways:

  • Kill Selen. You can get her to appear by moving the Valley of Defilement to White World Tendency. She'll appear on a small island in the second section of the Swamp of Sorrow, a ways to the right of the raised walkway. Drop into the mire to reach her.
  • Kill a Phosphorescent Slug. Continue along the aforementioned walkway and it will eventually bring you down to swamp level. Continue along the boards until you come to Slugs. On your left will be an island where Slugs drop from the sky. Look around for a smaller island with a lone Slug. Kill it for the set.

This armor can only be worn by female characters.

Fluted Set

Location: Tower of Latria, Prison of Hope

Price: None

The starting equipment of the Knight class, the Fluted Set is also found on the first floor of the Prison of Hope (World 3-1). Once you reach the bottom floor you'll come under attack by a spherical mass of bodies and swords that can launch Soul Arrows. Head to the far end of the walkways from this foe and you'll find the Fluted set on a corpse in plain sight.

Gloom Set

Location: Tower of Latria, Upper Latria

Price: None

The armor of Yurt the Silent Chief is held by the man himself. To reach him you'll need to ascend the central tower in Upper Latria (World 3-2), cross to the next tall tower, climb to the top (where you find Dreglings casting a spell), and look for a path to another, nearby platform. Below this is a second platform you can drop to, where Yurt is stuck in a cage. Free and kill him for the armor set. If you don't kill him here, Yurt will move to the Nexus after you kill a boss, and you'll find him hidden away on the right side of the second floor.

Imperial Spy Set

Location: Tower of Latria, Prison of Hope

Price: None

A fine set for those who want to be sneaky but stylish. The Imperial Spy set is located in the church where you fight Fool's Idol, the final boss of the area. Flanking the big, arrow-spewing statue that you need to deactivate to return to the rest of the prison are two towers that lead up and into the church. The right tower takes you to a Dregling whom you need to kill to defeat Fool's Idol; the left tower takes you up to the Imperial Spy set.

Leather Set

Location: Shrine of Storms, Island's Edge

Price: 3,600 Souls

The starting set of the Hunter, the Leather Set is sold by Graverobber Blige. Blige is trapped in a cell in Island's Edge (World 4-1), and you'll need a key to free him. The Copper Key is through the first fog door you see, and past a barred door on your immediate left, inside the perimeter wall. To reach the Key you'll need to take a right instead, go up and over the wall, and then back down the other side.

You can find Blige's cell by dropping into the hole in the ground behind the Vanguard Demon across the courtyard, opening the illusory wall on your left, and running straight ahead. Blige's cell is past a few Skeletons. Once freed Blige will move on to the Ritual Path (World 4-2), and you'll find him a short trip from the starting Archstone.

Magician's Set

Location: Tower of Latria, Prison of Hope

Price: None

The default set of the Magician and Royalty classes, the Magician's Set can also be found in the Prison of Hope (World 3-1), a few cells away from the starting Archstone. You'll need the Prison of Hope, 3F Cell Key to get the set. Keep following the path to the left of the Archstone, past several Mind Flayers, to find the Key on a wall in the next area over.

Mirdan Set

Location: Valley of Defilement, Swamp of Sorrow

Price: 40,000 Souls

The starting set of the Temple Knight, the Mirdan Set is held by the Filthy Woman in the Swamp of Sorrow (World 5-2). She's located just inside the entrance of the tent city that comprises the second half of the Swamp of Sorrow, just as you leave the bog behind.

Official's Set

Location: Various

Price: None

Ever wanted to look like one of those grinning jerks that bedevil your steps in too many areas of Demon's Souls? The Official's set has you covered. A necessity for freeing Yuria the Witch, the Official's set is gained by killing Fat Officials in several specific areas of the game:

  • The first Fat Official that attacks you in the Smithing Grounds (World 2-1), just after you're attacked by wolves
  • The second Fat Official who also attacks you in the Smithing Grounds, sitting alone on a platform on the other side of a collapsing bridge - you need to walk along the left side of the bridge to reach him safely
  • The Fat Official who stands by the elevator in The Tunnel City (World 2-2), down the first passage on your left from the Archstone
  • The Fat Official who stands behind the closed gate in the Inner Ward (World 1-3), accessible once you make it through the majority of the level and double back before reaching the end

Each of these items is a guaranteed drop, so getting the whole set is just a matter of time. You'll never get them to drop again during a playthrough, so make sure you gather and keep the whole set.

Old Raggedy Set

Location: Boletarian Palace, Gates of Boletaria

Price: None

The perfect look for a very specific type of magic user, the Old Raggedy set is found two different ways. The first requires visits to two different areas:

  • Once you reach the upper walls in the Gates of Boletaria (World 1-1) you'll come to a fog door guarded by a Blue-Eyed Knight. Further down the wall from the fog door is a path that opens a shortcut back to the entrance. Halfway down you'll find a balcony with taut chains on either side. Cut the chains to drop corpses onto the ground below. When you emerge from the shortcut you'll find the set on one of the bodies to your right. This will get you all but the hat.
  • The Three Cornered Hat is on the second floor of the Prison of Hope (World 3-1), inside a cell. To get at it you'll need to achieve White World Tendency in the Tower of Latria, otherwise the cell is blocked off.

The other, complete option is assassination. Yuria the Witch wears the Old Raggedy set, and you'll need to kill her to get it. You'll find the Rusted Bloody Key on the Fat Official guarding Biorr (refer to the Brushwood Set above for instructions). Head to the Inner Ward (World 1-3) and check near the wolves at the beginning for an alley that leads to a prison, accessible only via the Key. Inside is another Fat Official who's guarding Yuria, and he'll only give you access if you wear the entire Official's set (see below for instructions on finding it).

If you don't kill Yuria in the tower she'll jump to the Nexus, and you can fight her there. She's located with the other magic users, in the candlelit area on the right side of the Nexus.

This armor can only be worn by female characters.

Penetrator Set

Location: Boletarian Palace, Inner Ward

Price: None

The signature look of one of the cooler bosses in Demon's Souls, the Penetrator set requires a significant time sacrifice. To get the Rusted Key to find the set you'll need to trade 26 Ceramic Coins to Sparkly the Crow, who sits in a nest on the Island's Edge (World 4-1). Ceramic Coins are only found in Fractured Mode, during Pure White or Pure Black World Tendency, and are rare commodities. Smash envionmental objects - jars, tables, crates, what have you - to find them. There are only thirteen Coins available per playthrough, so you'll need to play through Demon's Souls twice to gather enough.

Once you have the Rusted Key you'll also need access to the alleyway that leads to Yuria the Witch's prison:

  • Get the Iron Key Ring from the first Fat Official you can fight in the Inner Ward (World 1-3), alongside a group of bowmen
  • Unlock the dungeon on the Lord's Path (World 1-2) that's through a door just before the Iron Knight boss arena and Archstone
  • Kill the Fat Official inside for the Rusted Bloody Key
  • Head to the area with carts full of wolves in the Inner Ward and check the wall on the right for an alleyway to a door the Rusted Bloody Key opens
  • Run straight ahead to find a dead end with a Stone of Ephemeral Eyes
  • Hit the wall behind the item to find a locked door that you can open with the Rusted Key - the set is behind it

Finding enough Ceramic Coins for this set is a journey in and of itself, and beyond the scope of this guide.

Plate Set

Location: Boletarian Palace

Price: 4,900 Souls

The starting set of the Soldier class, the Plate Set is sold by the Dregling Merchant. Depending on where you are in the game the Dregling Merchant can be in one of three places:

  • Before you defeat Phalanx he is in a small room to the right of the main path in the Gates of Boletaria (World 1-1), just after you encounter a soldier who blows up a group of explosive barrels with a Firebomb.
  • After Phalanx but before Iron Giant he's at the far end of the Lord's Path (World 1-2), inside the wall. You'll find him by descending into the wall just before running across the final stretch of bridge that leads to the Iron Giant.
  • After the Iron Giant he's in a small room halfway through the Inner Ward (World 1-3), to the right of a narrow alley where you keep getting ambushed by soldiers and assassins. Watch out for a Red-Eyed Knight and a lesser soldier when you enter the building. The Dregling is behind clustered debris and on the second floor.

Red-Eye Knight Set

Location: Nexus

Price: None

The set of choice for dangerous, red-eyed jerks everywhere. The Red-Eye Knight set is available only to purchasers of the Demon's Souls digital deluxe bonus edition. Speak to Stockpile Thomas in the Nexus and the set will be among his wares.

(As of now you can't upgrade from the normal version of Demon's Souls if you want this set, so you'll need to buy the game over again. Fortunately, the Blue-Eye Knight set is almost exactly the same, aside from the eye color, and you can get the set in the base game.)

Rogue's Set

Location: Tower of Latria

Price: None

The armor of choice for ne'er do wells everywhere. The Rogue set is found in two pieces:

  • The Gold Hood can be found two different ways. The first is to deflate the giant heart in the middle of Upper Latria (World 3-2). Descend into the tower after it's gone and you'll find the Gold Hood amongst its corpse. Your other option is to kill Mephistopheles, who wears this set. You can get her to appear by achieving Pure Black Character Tendency and killing Yurt the Silent Chief.
  • The rest of the set is in the Prison of Hope (World 3-1), though you need to obtain the Prison of Hope 2F West Key from Upper Latria to get the pieces. It's found atop the first tower with magic-casting Dreglings, and requires White World Tendency to reach. Once you have it, head back to the Prison of Hope, proceed to the first floor where you fight the giant ball of corpses, and run past. There's a set of stairs leading to the second floor just before you head outside. The set is in one of the cells.

Saint's Set

Location: Valley of Defilement, Depraved Chasm

Price: None

Worn by those of great faith, the Saint's set is in one of the foulest areas of Demon's Souls. The set is just outside the ruined building where you find the Filthy Woman, at the end of a short path and beside a torch.

Shaman's Set

Location: Valley of Defilement, Swamp of Sorrow

Price: None

A set for tribal practitioners of magic. The Shaman's set is on a corpse beside a Depraved One that can cast Poison Cloud. You'll find them near the front of the large tent city that serves as the second half of the Swamp of Sorrow (World 5-2), on a small platform in the midst of a patch of bog.

Venerable Sage's Set

Location: Tower of Latria, Prison of Hope

Price: None

The armor set of Sage Freke. There are two ways to obtain the Venerable Sage's set:

  • Kill Sage Freke. He's found in the Prison of Hope, though you need a Special Key to set him free. The Key is located on the wall of the small room where a Dregling is casting restorative magic for the Fool's Idol. You need to come here anyway to defeat the boss, so grab the Key while you're at it. Sage Freke is in a cell on the third floor. Kill him here or in the Nexus, though be wary of his magic in either case.
  • The set is also found in the Prison of Hope, though you'll need Pure White World Tendency to get it. Once you achieve White World Tendency a heap of debris blocking the western half of the second floor will disappear, allowing you to grab the set.
