How to Make Gold in "Red Dead Online"

I started writing about "RDO" when I noticed how little info was available online.

No Mining Required

In Red Dead Online there are two currencies; Cash and Gold. Both can be earned by playing the game, but Gold is considered a premium currency since it can be bought with real-world money. Keep your wallets in your pockets though; in this guide I will be exploring ways to earn Gold by just playing the game.

There are several ways to make Gold by just literally "playing the game" however this will only get you nuggets (any amount listed as 0.12, 0.16, etc.) For larger amounts you need to participate in Daily Challenges and Awards.

Note: The game is working again as of the latest "update." Apparently Rockstar mercifully reckoned Patch 1.21.

Daily Challenges

Do your Dailies for 28 days straight and you earn a bonus Treasure Map.

Do your Dailies for 28 days straight and you earn a bonus Treasure Map.

Daily Challenges are the best way to make Gold in Red Dead Online. Unlike the Daily Objectives of GTA Online you only need to complete one task to start a streak, however you will earn a bonus if you complete all seven Challenges for that day.

Doing all Daily Challenges for the day, during week one, amounts to 0.2 Gold per Challenge. With the seventh Challenge you get 0.2 but also 0.6 as a bonus for completing all Challenges for the day. That is a total of two Gold Bars per day IF you get all seven Challenges done.

During week two each Challenge gives out 0.3 plus a 0.9 bonus for Challenge number seven, equaling three GB at the end of the day. Week three amounts to 0.4 per Challenge with a 1.2 bonus after the seventh one, this comes out to four GB each day. Week four you will make 0.5 GB per Challenge with a 1.5 bonus on Challenge seven. In addition to doing Dailies for 28 days you get a Treasure Map.

After that is where week four gets interesting. The streak can go on past 28 days. How long? Well I made it as far as 89 days, and a user on Reddit had 117; so I cannot honestly say how long you can keep the streak going. You will continue to receive 0.5 GB per Challenge, plus the 1.5 bonus each day. As if it's a constant 28 day streak! Doing this though will forfeit the free Treasure Map unless you intentionally skip a day.

For the sake of your browsing I'm going to separate these Challenges into several different categories; ranging from ridiculously easy to the nigh impossible Posse Challenges. The ones you're most likely to accomplish versus the ones, in my opinion, are not worth frustrating yourself over.

Note: Not all Challenge titles may be listed accurately or may be changed over time. Numeral values, of the amount of times the Challenge must be done before completion, may vary. Use "CTRL+F" and type in your desired Daily Challenge to help navigate you through the article faster. Just leave the numeral value out of it . . .

Super Easy Challenges

These Challenges aren't a headache to complete but they may require some leg work and a little money.

  • Change Facial Appearance/Hairstyle: Go to any of the Barber Shops on the map and hold Y/Triangle to customize your Appearance. Keep in mind that this will cost money and/or Gold depending on the style chosen.
  • Used an Emote on a Local: Go to any town, or settlement, and hold Left Trigger/L2 to lock on to an NPC. Then press Right Bumper/R1 to open your available Emotes. From there just hold any of the face buttons for your chosen Emote.
  • Used an Emote on a Player: This one could prove tricky but not impossible. In my experience, other players are always doing this as a way to communicate. When close to a player press Right Bumper/R1, to bring up your Emotes, then hold any of the face buttons for your chosen Emote. Just don’t press Right Trigger/R2 by accident, in which case things could get socially awkward by old west standards . . .
  • Items Sold to a Fence: The only hard part about this challenge is finding the items; which just requires a little leg work. Any Pocket Watches, Rings, etc. collected from looting dead enemies can be sold. However, if you can also find Jewelry in specific places you can get guaranteed items to sell.
  • Belt Buckle Updated: To do this you’re going to need at least one other Buckle to switch to. Go to any General Store or Tailor, go to the Wardrobe in the back of the store. Go down to Buckles and select whatever one you’re not already wearing.
  • Five Drinks Ordered at a Saloon:Go to any Saloon on the map and order five Beers, five Whiskeys, or be like I am in real-life and do both!
  • One Dog Petted: Quite possibly the greatest Daily Challenge. Go to any town or settlement with a dog. Press Left Trigger/L2 to lock onto it, and X/Square to Pat. Also registers for your Camp dog after the Frontier Pursuits update.
  • X Distance Driven a Train/Traveled by Train: As you’re exploring you should hear a train whistle. Ride to it and jump on (if you’re not sure where it is check the map, it will be the moving train icon). If you’re looking to spawn a train head to Riggs Station. Keep the camera facing south and wait a couple of minutes. If a train doesn’t spawn switch sessions until it does. Jump on and either stand at one of the cars or throw the Engineer off (by pressing Y/Triangle GTA style) to drive it. Depending on the nature of the Challenge.
  • Three Weapons Cleaned With Gun Oil: You pretty much need to do this occasionally anyway. In case you’re new, skipped Single Player (shame on you if you did), and/or you’re wondering why your guns aren’t working as smoothly as usual, chances are you need to clean them. Don’t be worried this isn’t Call of Juarez or Far Cry 2, your weapons won’t explode on you. You should carry at least six Gun Oils on you at all times. To clean a gun hold Left Bumper/L1, select the weapon, then press the Left Stick button/L3 to Maintain. From there hold the X/Square button (or tap depending on your controller layout) to clean the weapon. Now if you already cleaned your weapons recently you can dirty them up again by hip firing a lot, but just use Standard Ammo or it could be pricey.
  • Two Player Stats Boosted by Tonics: Bitters (Stamina), Health Tonic (Health), Snake Oil (Dead Eye), and their other versions all count toward this Challenge. Pick two of your three stats and drink one tonic for each. If you don’t have any you can buy some from a General Store.
  • Five Canned Food Eaten: ANY canned goods apply here. Hold Left Bumper/L1, go to the Items tab, and eat any of the canned Provisions.
  • X Distance Ran: Not everything you do is on horseback. This also obviously counts during Showdowns and Free Roam Events.
  • Don’t Reach High Hostility Within One Game Day: Your hostility rises when you attack other players. So don’t be a jerk for 48 minutes. To help you with this open the User Menu (left on D-pad), select Online Options, and switch to Defensive. This, for the most part, will prevent you from getting into trouble.
  • Five Herbs Eaten: Walk to almost any pick-able plant and hold Y/Triangle to Eat it.
  • One Clothing Style Updated: If you have another outfit stored on your horse switching to that will get you this Challenge. You can just change your hat and it registers!
  • Visited [Location]: So this one’s only slightly more complicated that the town ones. If you’re not familiar with the game’s map than some of these may make you shrug your shoulders. However, some of them are pretty obvious.
  • Travel X Distance by Boat or Canoe: The only hard part about this one is finding the boat, but don’t fret there are plenty along the shores of Flat Iron Lake. You just need to relieve the owner of it . . . From there row in whatever direction you wish until you complete this Challenge. Just keep in mind that boats run on Stamina. You’ll see what I mean . . .
  • Travel X Distance by Coach or Wagon: If it’s got wheels it’s a “wagon.” You can steal these from travelers and from enemies during certain random events. After the Frontier Pursuits update, you can do this Challenge while delivering goods, or while using one of the purchasable vehicles.
  • X Distance Swam: As you probably know already the time you can spend swimming is based on how much Stamina you have. Taking Potent or Special Bitters will give you a LITTLE bit of extra time, but not much to float around. After your Stamina Core drains your Health will deplete, leading to you drowning. For this Challenge you just have to swim around near the shore, until you’ve swam the allotted distance.
  • Three Complimentary Snacks Eaten at a Saloon: At certain Saloons (like the big ones, not the rinky dinks) there is a bowl of Almonds you can eat from with X/Square. You can only eat from it three times before the bowl is empty. So if you only were able to eat from it once then another player got here first. Either switch sessions or head to another Saloon.
  • Five Fresh Produce Eaten: Since not all produce can be eaten from the items tab, of your Inventory, you’ll have to do it from the Satchel. Hold Right on the D-pad to open the Satchel then go to the Provisions tab. Apples, Celery, Pears, and other fruits and veggies count toward this Challenge. See? We can eat horse food too. Just not Hay and Oatcakes . . . Unless you’re one of those extreme vegans . . .
  • Five Tobacco Smoked or Chewed: When looting enemies you’ll pick up a lot of Cigarettes and Chewing Tobacco. Use five of any in your Items section of the Inventory.
  • X Distance Traveled: Literally move by ANY means; running, swimming, on horseback, etc. It doesn’t matter! Basically just move.
  • Five Herbs Sold: Every plant you pick is like picking up a quarter on the sidewalk. Take them to a Doctor (in Valentine and/or Saint Denis) to sell them. Seems insignificant but it’s a great way to make money if you’re just starting out.
  • One Claw Sold: Bear and Badger Claws count. You can find Bears in West Elizabeth and Badgers you can find around Bolder Gate Lemoyne (as one example). Eagle Talons also count toward this Challenge. You can find them flying around West Elizabeth in the daytime.
  • One Times Became drunk: We’ve all had nights like this. Go into your Inventory and drink as many bottles of whatever until the screen gets blurry. You can also do this at a Saloon.
  • X Distance Driven a Coach or Wagon: If it has wheels on it then it counts toward this Challenge. You can find them along most major trails or in cities. Even better if you’re doing a delivery mission, or own one of the other wagons as part of Frontier Pursuits, they count too.
  • Followed Dog to Something Interesting: This was a random event added with the Frontier Pursuits update. As you’re riding around the wilderness you’ll hear a dog barking, follow it to find a dead body you can loot. The dog might also lead you into a bushwhack so be wary. The thing that makes this Challenge hard is actually FINDING a dog to spawn. The screenshots below will show you these dog spots but they might not spawn until Rockstar figures out the random event spawn rates.
  • Sell Five Animal Meat: The only kind of meat you can sell is the uncooked variety. Any meat will do. Keep in mind that cooking some surplus meat is good for refilling your Cores.
  • Camp Theme Updated: At your Camp (if you can get Cripps to pitch it) go to the Wilderness Outfitters shop by the bench of the wagon. Under “Theme” pick one of the alternative sets. Keep in mind this Daily Challenge will cost money initially, but subsequently will be “free” to perform.
  • Five Dry Goods Eaten: Crackers, Assorted Biscuits, and Salted Meat (Beef and/or Venison) count toward this Challenge. You can buy these items from General Stores, or found at various locations around the map.
  • One Weapon Customized: You know what’s terrible about this Challenge? It could cost you Gold Bars if you pick the wrong kind of weapon customization. I don’t think you’re that stupid, but I’ll let you do you . . . For the rest of you switching to a previously purchased customization will register.

Note: The follow Daily Challenges were added after the Naturalist update. You do not need the Advanced Camera to take part in the photography related Challenges. If at any time you can't take a picture just switch sessions, it is likely a network error in that lobby.

  • One Self Portrait Taken: Equip a Camera by holding down the Left Bumper/L1 then press Right Bumper/R1 to open the Items tab. Your Camera will be in the Kit slot in the "three-o-clock" position. Once equipped press in on the Left Stick/L3 to enter Selfie Mode. Then take your picture, but don't be vain about it!
  • Photograph your Horse: Dismount your horse and equip a Camera. Get your steed in the shot and take it's picture.
  • Cat Photographed: Not sure if Big Cats count toward this Challenge, but let's just stick to the adorable domestic ones that will register just fine. You can find several of them in Saint Denis, Lemoyne. There is also one by the Fence in Thieves Landing.
  • One Player Photographed: The best players in Red Dead Online are the ones that stop and wave or tip their hat. Pull out your camera and take their picture to complete this Challenge.
  • Visited [Location] and [Location] within an hour/30 minutes: Rockstar means real time. Fast traveling between both locations also counts, but if you have a fast horse you can make it between places in due time. It does not matter which location you visit first as long as you get to the other within the given time limit.
  • One Mask Worn: This Daily Challenge is unfortunately not available to everyone for some odd reason. The only masks available were ones sold at Madam Nazar's shop during Halloween 2019. If you do have a mask you can access it from the Wardrobe at either your Camp or the General Store.
  • One Dog Photographed: Dogs can be found in several towns and settlements. Emerald Ranch, New Hanover and Strawberry, West Elizabeth are two good places to find some. You can also take a picture of your dog at Camp for this to count.
  • Five Items Sold to Gus: Gus is Online's answer to Single Player's Trapper. He also has set up shop in a lot of the Trapper's locations (the paw print black dot on the map). He is similar to the Butcher but also accepts Legendary Animal pelts in addition. Whatever you can sell to the Butcher, you can sell to Gus.
  • Treasure Map or treasure found: The game will give you a free Treasure Map every five Ranks after Rank 10. You can also rarely find them by looting dead enemies. Locations for all Random Event Treasure Maps can be found here.
  • Five Candies Eaten: Either five bags of Candy, Chocolate Bars, or Peppermints (that you can buy from the Stable) will count toward this challenge.

Herbalist Challenges

You will be tasked with collecting five of a particular herb. You should be collecting these anyway since you can craft various Tonics at a campfire and/or sell them for $0.25 apiece at a Doctor. These are quick "Challenges" if you know where to look.

Keep in mind that there is an unfortunate glitch where you may need to collect six or even seven of the listed plant. If you have the "Equine Assistance" Skill this will not register since your horse is doing the collecting.

Please refer to this guide for a location for every plant species in the game.

Crafting Challenges

Not really a "challenge" though it does involve some Hunting to acquire the meats for these. You also need Creeping Thyme, Oregano, and/or Wild Mint for seasoning. Creeping Thyme can be found almost anywhere, but Wild Mint grows around damp areas and the water's edge. Oregano can be found in dry hot climates, but is also common like Creeping Thyme.

If you're having trouble getting Cripps to move your Camp you can also use Campfires around the map to achieve these Challenges. Keep in mind that most Gang Hideouts will have a usable Campfire.

After the Moonshiner update you can now spawn directly into your Camp through the Online screen. After the Naturalist update, once you reach Rank five of that Role, you can purchase the Wilderness Camp. The Wilderness Camp allows you to set up a small campfire anywhere (just like the one in Single Player). However if you have "Outlaw Pass 3" I highly recommend waiting until you unlock the 30% Voucher. I made that mistake, but I think it's still worth it.

  • Five Provisions Cooked at a Campsite: This doesn’t have to be just animal meats, Coffee counts too! God knows I need plenty of it . . .
  • Three Cooked Seasoned Succulent Fish: The two fish that give out this kind of meat are Sockeye Salmon and Steelhead Trout. Go into your Satchel, head to the Ingredients tab, and hold A/X to Breakdown the fish. This will give you Succulent Fish Meat.
  • Five Meats Eaten: Any meat items will do, even seasoned meat. If you don’t have any cooked in your Satchel you can hunt for it, or buy it from the Butcher. Salted Beef and Venison also count toward this.
  • Cooked Seasoned Exotic Bird Meat: Pelicans give this kind of meat. A good place to find one is just north of Van Horn Trading Post, but they can also be found around Flat Iron Lake (see screenshot below).
  • Three Cooked Seasoned Mutton: If you’re in a rush you can kill a couple of Sheep at Emerald Ranch, but Bighorns give this up in the mountains of Ambarino, West Elizabeth, and just north-east of Valentine in the Cumberland area.
  • Three Cooked Seasoned Big Game: This meat can be gathered from predator class animals (Bears, Wolves, Alligators, and Cougars). Pretty much if it’s a red dot, and is big, it has Big Game Meat. What makes seasoning this meat unique are the gold cores depending on the herb used. Wild Mint boosts Health, Oregano boosts Stamina, and Creeping Thyme boosts Dead Eye.
  • One Cooked Seasoned Crustacean Meat: Crabs have this meat. You can find them on the large island in Flat Iron Lake around the beaches. Use a Varmint Rifle, Bow with Small Game Arrows, Pistol, or Revolver. Once you collect the carcass hold Right on the D-pad to enter your Satchel. Hold A/X to Breakdown the Crab giving you Crustacean Meat.
  • Crafted a Tonic: For this Challenge just Craft Bitters (Braddock Root), Health Cure (Ginseng and Yarrow), or Snake Oil (Indian Tobacco). Braddock Root you can find around water. Yarrow can be found just outside of Valentine. Ginseng is a little rarer but you can find it in heavily forested spots. Indian Tobacco can also be found near areas with trees.
  • Three Cooked Seasoned Prime Beef: Cows, Oxen, and Bison will give you this type of meat, but if you’re in a rush you can buy it from a Butcher or the Catalog. With the rarity of animals in Online it might be the safer option.
  • Crafted a Horse Care Item: Pretty much every Horse Care item requires Common Bulrush, which can be found around water. For Potent Horse Medicine you will need a Ginseng, and for Potent Horse Stimulant a Sage in addition to that Common Bulrush. Horse Reviver, Horse Meals, and Horse Ointment also qualify. Of course the Special derivatives also work.
  • Three Cooked Seasoned Pork: If you’re trying to do this one quickly you can purchase them from Butchers, General Stores, or have them mailed to your Camp from the Catalogue. Wild Boars, which are prevalent around Lemoyne and outside of Strawberry West Elizabeth, give this meat. Domestic Pigs (Flatneck Station New Hanover) and Peccaries (New Austin) will also give you this brand of meat.
  • Three Cooked Seasoned Venison: Like Prime Beef and Pork this can be bought, but there are also a number of animals that give it away for free. Deer, Pronghorns, and Elk (anywhere there are mountain forests) are three good sources of Venison, and even with the recent animal spawn issues can be found in some locations. Especially during missions.
  • Three Cooked Seasoned Flaky Fish: Sockeye Salmon, Steelhead Trout, and Bluegills DON’T have this type of meat. I figured it would be better to just list the fish that won’t have Flaky Fish . . . Everything else is open season, which also means you’re more likely to get this Challenge done fast.
  • Three Cooked Seasoned Plump Bird: Geese, Chickens, and Turkeys have this type of meat. I’ve never had Geese in real-life but I imagine it tastes like chicken? You can find Chickens at farms, Turkeys can be found in forested areas, and Geese can best be found in the plains around Emerald Ranch.

Note: The following Challenge was added with the Naturalist update.

  • Three cups of Coffee drunk: Along with the "One Dogs Petted" challenge this one has a special place in my heart. Go to any Campfire and brew three cups of Coffee under the Provisions tab (literally the first Crafting item that pops up). If you do not have any Ground Coffee to brew you can purchase it from the Handheld Catelogue or a General Store.

Horseman Challenges

Your main transportation option in Red Dead Online. These Challenges are simple enough but are equestrian based. It won't matter what type of horse, or how fast it is to complete these.

  • Change Horse Appearance: Go to any Stables (horseshoe icon on the map) and select “Manage Owned Horses.” From there select a horse, then “Appearance”, and then change its Mane or Tail to complete the challenge.
  • Feed Horses Five Times: You don’t need five DIFFERENT horses; just feed your current mount five times. You have to wait a little bit between feedings for each to register. There are two ways to feed your horse. You can lock onto it, while on foot, and press Right on the D-pad. Or you can use the horseback method; hold Left Bumper/L1 and press Right Bumper/R1 twice to open the Horse tab. Press the Right Stick to the left to feed your horse a food item.
  • Jump from Horse to Train: Very easy if you follow the prompts, but the hard part is finding the train. As you explore listen for a whistle, and also check between Riggs and Flatneck Stations for a chance at making a train spawn. If you’re in New Austin a train seems to always be at MacFarlane’s Ranch.
  • Jump from Horse to Another Horse: Don’t try doing this with wild horses. I know I thought that would be cool too, but it’s impossible. Trust me I tried . . . You can do it with domestic horses and with NPC travelers, though you’ll lose honor. You can also use a friend’s or posse member's horse for this to count.
  • Jump Three Meters onto a Horse: There is one guaranteed spot where I know this works (but I’m sure there are others). Go to the bank in Blackwater West Elizabeth (see screenshot below), there is a ladder in the back you can climb to get on the roof. At the top go to the left, atop the corner café, and jump off the side of the building. As you fall press Y/Triangle to land in the saddle. Oh . . . make sure to leave your horse down below, probably should have mentioned that first? I was just hoping you knew that already.
The cafe in Blackwater seems to be the perfect spot (in my experience). To get to the roof you'll need to climb a ladder onto the neighboring building.

The cafe in Blackwater seems to be the perfect spot (in my experience). To get to the roof you'll need to climb a ladder onto the neighboring building.

Video Example

  • 10 Vaults on Horseback: Any time you jump over something on horseback this will count. No need to do it consecutively though.
  • Five Animals Trampled: For some reason, this is ridiculously harder to do in Online than it was in Sing Player. I guess the animals are just coded differently? An easy way is by trampling the fish in Stillwater Creek, the pond north of Heartland Overflow, and the little lagoon in the swamp of Lemoyne (see screenshots below). In these places, you can “trample” fish for this Challenge.
  • Horse Tack Updated: Go to any Stabled and select “Tack and Services”. Select any of the Saddles, then select any Accessories (like Saddle bags for example) and you’ll unlock this Challenge. (Note: In future updates you may have to actually SWITCH tack for it to register.
  • Five Animals Stowed on Horseback: Large animals (like Deer, Pronghorns, etc.) can be stowed on the back, while two smaller animals (Ducks, Rabbits, etc.) can be stowed twice on the sides. A quick Challenge if the animals actually spawn . . .
  • X Distance Non-player Enemy Dragged From Horseback: Equip a Lasso in Thieves Landing and drag one of the Del Lobo gang members for the designated distance. Even if they die while you’re dragging them it still counts.
  • Jumped From a Horse to a Moving Wagon: Want to know a great prank to pull on a traveling settler in the 19th century? Jump from your horse to a moving wagon! Worked for Chuck Conners in The Big Country. Seriously though just ride along the side of a moving NPC and press X/Square to leap to their wagon, once you match their speed anyway.
  • X Distance Traveled on Mount: Considering your horse is your main mode of travel you will get this by literally “just playing the game”. Travel in any direction, at any speed, to any place in any game mode, just make sure you’re in the saddle.
  • Two Horse Stats Boosted by Tonics: Technically this can be considered a “crafting challenge” but standard horse stimulants and medicines (i.e. Store-bought) will register too. Hold Left Bumper/L1 then press Right Bumper/R1 to scroll to your Horse Items. Select a Horse Stimulant (any version) and a Horse Medicine (any version) to complete this Challenge.

Note: The following Challenge was added with the Naturalist update.

  • X Distance Traveled Leading own Horse: Dismount your steed, hold Left Trigger/L2, and press Y/Triangle to start Leading your horse. Oh . . . and you can let go of the Left Trigger/L2 while you do it. Just walk forward for whatever distance is required to complete this Challenge.

Fishing Challenges

These usually come in five, three, and one for small, medium, and large fish species. You cannot partake in these until you have unlocked and purchase the Fishing Rod (Rank 14). The game will tell you which Bait is best for your targeted fish, and don't worry I'll remind you below too! When fishing your target fish will bite twice, wait for this before hitting Right Trigger/R2 to catch it. This will keep you from catching the wrong fish in eclectic schools. You can see which fish is underwater by activating Eagle Eye (Right and Left Stick Buttons/L3 and R3).

Please also refer to this guide for locations, and best baits to use, for each fish species.

Fishing Spots

  • Fish Caught With a Lure: After Rank 30 you will unlock the River, Lake, and Swamp Lures for purchase. Go to any of your favorite fishing spots and catch five fish with your chosen Lure. Remember to activate Eagle Eye to spot medium and large fish before you waste your time.
  • Five Fish Caught With Live Bait: Worms, Crickets, and Crayfish count toward this Challenge. It also doesn’t matter WHICH fish species you catch, and believe me, they all love live bait.
  • One Longnose Gar Caught: A great place for this is along the river’s edge south of that abandoned slaughterhouse outside of Saint Denis (see screenshot below). You can tell them apart from Lake Sturgeons thanks to their longer snouts.

Longnose Gar Fishing Spots

The lower green dot is a guaranteed spot, but you can also find them in Lakay.

The lower green dot is a guaranteed spot, but you can also find them in Lakay.

  • Five Types of Fish Caught: You need to catch ONE of five different species. It doesn’t matter which, but using different bait in different bodies of water will make this go faster. One way to do this would be to fish from Lagras, then ride up the Kamassa River and fish in Roanoke Ridge.
  • One Muskie Caught: Ride to Owanjila and use a Lake Lure on one of the big fish swimming around. It will take a few nibbles before it bites.
  • One Lake Sturgeon Caught: This might blow your mind, but . . . You know where there’s a good place to fish for Lake Sturgeon? Flat IronLake of course, specifically right at the water’s edge in Blackwater. A Lake Lure is recommended but Live Worms work too.
  • Five Redfin Pickerel Caught: These specific fish can be found anywhere along the Dakota River (see screenshot below). Make sure to use Bread Bait to attract it, though you might catch a Chain Pickerel instead. They have the same outline in Eagle Eye but they’re two different species.

Redfin Pickerel Fishing Spots

Pretty much everywhere with water in this picture are good places to fish for Redfin Pickerel.

Pretty much everywhere with water in this picture are good places to fish for Redfin Pickerel.

  • Five Fish Caught With Food: Go to any fishing spot and select the Fishing Rod. Select Bread, Corn, or Cheese and catch whatever bites. I wonder if Rockstar was going to make us buy Bread Rolls, Corn, and Cheese Wedges at some point. You know to make us have to Craft these food baits? That’s a level of immersion I’m glad they did away with.
  • Five Bullhead Catfish Caught: Use Corn Bait around the Kamasa River and Lagras of Bayou Nwa Lemoyne. While using Eagle Eye they have a thin profile, like a Pickerel, but look like guppies kind of.

Bullhead Catfish Fishing Spots

Every body of water within this screenshot is a great spot to fish for Bullhead Catfish. While using Eagle Eye look for the ones shaped like guppies.

  • Three Largemouth Bass Caught: You can best find these around Flat Iron Lake and Stillwater Creek (west of Thieves Landing). A Lake or River Lure (unlocked at Rank 30) is good for catching these. You can also use Live Worms but you may catch other fish swimming around instead.

Largemouth Bass Fishing Spots

Everything spot in green is a great place to fish for Largemouth Bass.

Everything spot in green is a great place to fish for Largemouth Bass.

  • Three Steelhead Trout Caught: These can be found in several places but these are the best three in my opinion (see screenshots below). They are also source of Succulent Fish Meat. Depending on where you’re fishing use the corresponding Lure to attract them. Live Worms also work but you’re likely to catch something else in the process.
  • One Fish Caught Weighing at Least 5lbs [2.2kg]: Sockeye Salmon, Steelhead Trout, and Smallmouth/Largemouth Bass can get this big. Though if you want to get it done quickly go after one of the larger fish like Muskie, Lake Sturgeon, etc.
  • Five Bluegill Caught: Like the game says Bluegill are everywhere It’s true! Go to any fishing spot, even small ponds you would otherwise ignore, and you’ll catch these. Using Cheese Bait is your best bet.
  • One Northern Pike Caught: One guaranteed place you can find one of these is at Cattail Pond. Of course you can get them in other places, such as Lake Isabella and upper Dakota River, but here it’s like shooting fish in a barrel . . . Actually don’t do that with any of these Challenges . . .

Northern Pike Fishing Spot

You can always find a Northern Pike here at Cattail Pond.

You can always find a Northern Pike here at Cattail Pond.

  • 10 Fish Caught: Any ten fish will do at any fishing spot. If you would like to make some money on this one head to O’Creagh’s Run with a Lake Lure. If the Sockeye Salmon stop biting switch to Bait.
  • Five Rock Bass Caught: Like Bluegills this species is practically everywhere. Annoyingly you will likely catch Bluegill when trying to get these . . . Or vice versa if you’re trying to catch Bluegill . . . I think Rockstar knows exactly what they’re doing, but in the below screenshot there are some places you’re practically guaranteed to catch Rock Bass. If you use Cheese Bait that is . . .

Rock Bass Fishing Spot

The fishing pier on Clement's Point is a great place to catch Rock Bass. It's also a good place to get Steelhead Trout.

  • Five Chain Pickerel Caught: You can find Chain Pickerel almost everywhere. I would avoid the Dakota River since you’re more likely to catch Redfin Pickerel (even if you’re using Corn Bait). The Kamassa River, specifically south of Elysian Pond, is better bet.

Chain Pickerel Fishing Spots

Pretty much anywhere in this screenshot is a good place to find them, though you can find them almost everywhere. You can even fish for them in Lagras, though you're more likely to catch a Bullhead Catfish.

  • Three Sockeye Salmon Caught: Like Steelhead Trout this is the only other fish where you can get Succulent Fish Meat. They also sell for $2.50 a pop, at the Butcher. Use a River or Lake Lure for best results. See screenshots below for the best places to find them.

Sockeye Salmon Fishing Spots

These are two guaranteed places for catching Sockeye Salmon. Make sure to have a River and/or Lake Lure (depending) for best results.

  • Five Perch Caught: These little fish have a unique profile in the water when using Eagle Eye. They can be found in a lot of places, but the best is the section of the Dakota River just west of Valentine. You can also find them in Cattail Pond and Moonstone Pond. I’m no fish expert but I guess they like ponds? Not that they would have a choice since ponds are . . . you know . . . ponds.

Perch Fishing Spots

Every body of water within this screenshot is a great place for Perch, but not much else . . . Be sure to use Bread Bait.

  • One Channel Catfish Caught: The two best locations for these are the little islands north of Saint Denis, and the section of the Kamassa River on the west side of Lakay (see screenshot below). You can catch these with a Swamp Lure, but while you’re in Lakay pick up a Special Swamp Lure (Rank 41 and up) which will help attract these massive fish.

Hunting Challenges

Note: Patch 1.19 has finally fixed the "infinite loading screen" glitch. Feel free to switch sessions in order to complete these Challenges easier.

There are a lot of these, and mainly involve "kill/skin (insert animal here)", and they can sometimes be frustrating. However, that's why I'm here and will provide screenshots for places where you can find the target species. Keep in mind that this corresponds with the "Crafting Challenges" since you'll need certain meats to appease those.

You'll notice a problem with the community when it comes to everyone having the same list of Challenges. Looking for a particular animal to hunt? Chances are everyone and their Fortnite-playing-unusually-aggressive-little-brother will be going after the same thing. So be prepared to switch sessions a lot if the animals you're seeking are not in the locations listed below. Then again I'm probably not helping matters much with this article . . .

Animal Locations

  • One Alligator Skinned/Killed: Chances are you do this already while exploring the swamps of Lemoyne. Alligators come in two sizes; small and large. Small ones have hides that can be draped on your horse, while the larger, more common brand can only hold one pelt. Both versions of the Alligator pelts sell for the same price at a Butcher.
  • 20 Animals Killed/Skinned: This is one of those “pfft I was doing this anyway . . .” kind of Challenges. If you’re in a rush you can also Dynamite fish.
  • Five Whole Animal Carcasses Sold: After killing an animal you can pick them up and Stow them on your saddle. Certain animals can even be placed whole in your Satchel! Sell five to a Butcher to complete this Challenge, and by the way fish count toward this too.
  • Two Virginia Opossums Skinned: These are the little critters that sound like screeching zombies in the middle of the night. Thanks for that Rockstar . . . You can find them pretty much anywhere like other nocturnal animals.
  • Five Feathers Sold: ANY Feathers you get counts toward this Challenge, even Plumes. If you’re new to the game you can get Feathers from birds . . . just saying.
  • Five Animals Killed With a Knife: No you don’t have to fight Bears with a Knife, though you’re welcome to try . . . This Challenge isn’t as hard as it sounds. Lasso a Deer, Buck, Ram, Elk, etc. Hold Left Trigger/L2 as you dismount, and get close enough to it, then press B/Circle when you get the kill prompt. Only when the prompt comes up or you’ll release your prey. If you’re a low-level player make sure to use some Bitters as your Stamina meter will drain during the struggle.
  • Two Spoonbills Skinned: These can be kind of a pain since you have to switch sessions multiple times to find them. Also, your best chance is at dawn and dusk. You can find them best at the spot in the screenshot below. There are also a lot of Alligators here too.

Spoonbill Location

Apart from the areas marked in green you can also find them flying in this area. Look for a pink flamingo looking bird.

Apart from the areas marked in green you can also find them flying in this area. Look for a pink flamingo looking bird.

  • Three Vultures Plucked: Go to the Hanging Rock (see screenshot below). Here you can find at least two Vultures and a Condor too sometimes. Make sure you let them fly off before you shoot them or else they’ll get stuck out of reach. There’s also a Vulture on the sign outside of Armadillo, just down the road.

Vulture Locations

The lower green dot is the sign post leading to Armadillo. Hanging Rock is represented by the upper green dot.

The lower green dot is the sign post leading to Armadillo. Hanging Rock is represented by the upper green dot.

  • Three Hawks Plucked: Like Condors these birds fly slow in the air, and have a bigger wing span than Ravens. As you ride around The Heartlands, Great Plains, and Scarlet Meadows listen for their distinctive screech. You can also find them perched at bridges, rocks, and signs.
  • Three Rats Collected: Ever notice how you’re practically tripping over Rats until you have to do this Challenge? One place I can guarantee you’ll find them is the abandoned slaughterhouse outside of Saint Denis. If they’re not there go across the river, by the train bridge (see first screenshot below). If you don’t find any Rats ride away and come back, or switch sessions. If you don’t yet have a Varmint Rifle or Small Game Arrows use a Pistol or Revolver. Anything bigger and there will be nothing to collect...

Rats Location

There are several other areas where you're likely to find Rats, but whenever this is a Daily Challenge they never seem to pop up. This is a guaranteed spot around the evening.

There are several other areas where you're likely to find Rats, but whenever this is a Daily Challenge they never seem to pop up. This is a guaranteed spot around the evening.

  • Flying Bird Killed with a Sniper Rifle: You’re going to need a Rolling Block Rifle (unlocked at Rank 13) or the Carcano Rifle (unlocked at Rank 50) to do this. Slapping a scope on a Bolt Action Rifle doesn’t qualify (believe me I tested it). It’s not as impossible as it sounds, and you don’t have to aim for a large bird (though it helps). For once those Western Ravens will come in handy.
  • Two Pheasants Skinned: I’m going to tell you now these are a lot easier to find than Prairie Chickens. Somehow Pheasants are more common. You can find them in the Great Plains and Big Valley of West Elizabeth. You can also find them around Emerald Ranch and Downe’s Ranch in New Hanover.

Pheasant Location

My go-to spot for finding Pheasants. East of Downes' Ranch and west of Valentine.

My go-to spot for finding Pheasants. East of Downes' Ranch and west of Valentine.

  • Five Chickens Skinned: There are three places I know of where you can do this easily; the farm at Emerald Ranch (obviously), Lagras has a whole flock, and Rockstellar Fork might not have much going for it (compared to RDR1’s version) but there are plenty of Chickens here. Note that this Challenge only works with DOMESTIC Chickens.
  • Two Striped Skunks Skinned: Like Opossums and Raccoons these are more common at night, and are basically everywhere there is grassy terrain.
  • Three Little Brown Bats Collected: If I was to make an example of “time of day” being a factor in Hunting, it’s this. Bats can be found all around the swamps of Lemoyne at night but during the day can be found at a cave in Roanoke Ridge New Hanover. There is also a Rescue that can occur here. If there are no Bats switch to another session (see screenshot below). Make sure to use a Varmint Rifle, Bow with Small Game Arrows, Pistol, or Revolver.

Bat (Daytime) Location

The DAYTIME location for finding Bats. Otherwise wait until night and ride around Bayou Nwa. You're also likely to find rats here.

  • Turtle Skinned: It’s a shame Turtles don’t give us something other than Herp-de-derp Meat. I ALMOST feel guilty when I hear that little defeated groan. Though they are easy to kill with a Knife. You can find them in the swamps of Lemoyne, the marsh west of Thieves Landing, and around the beaches of Flat Iron Lake.
  • Three Cows Skinned: This is a pretty easy one. You can find Cows at Emerald Ranch, South of Rhodes, and a few other farms around the map (see screenshot below).

Cow Locations

The green dots are locations where you can find Cows. If you don't find any in the northern most dot ride south to the other two.

The green dots are locations where you can find Cows. If you don't find any in the northern most dot ride south to the other two.

  • Two American Muskrats Skinned: These are those brazen little fury bastards that attack you when you’re trying to fish. They can be found along every river in the game, as well as Bluewater Marsh Lemoyne.
  • Two Western Toads Collected: Western Toads, like Muskrats, can be found around rivers and the swamps of Lemoyne. Use a Varmint Rifle, Bow with Small Game Arrows, Pistol, or Revolver.
  • Two Iguanas skinned: Either Green or Desert Iguanas count toward this (plus  they're the only two species in the game). Green Iguanas can be found on the large island, west of Clement’s Point Lemoyne, in Flat Iron Lake (see screenshot below). Desert Iguanas can be found in Rio Bravo and Gaptooth Ridge New Austin. Use a Varmint Rifle like other small game.

Green Iguanas Location

You can find Green Iguanas on the same big island, in Flat Iron Lake, where you can also find a Loon and Crabs.

You can find Green Iguanas on the same big island, in Flat Iron Lake, where you can also find a Loon and Crabs.

  • Loon Skinned: Three places I know of where you’re guaranteed to find a Loon; the large island west of Clement’s Point Lemoyne in Flat Iron Lake, Lake Owanjila, and the Lower Montana River just north of Thieves Landing. Like Ducks, and other birds, they will fly off when you get close. If a Loon isn’t at the above locations (see screenshot below) switch sessions.

Loon Locations

You can find Loons at the green "dots" in this screenshot.

You can find Loons at the green "dots" in this screenshot.

  • Panther Killed/Skinned: There’s only one part of the map where you can find Panthers, thus making this one of the harder Challenges. The forest around Catfish Jackson’s, and Shady Belle Lemoyne is where a Panther is likely to spawn. They’re very similar to Cougars in how they act, sound, and attack. Because of the dense surroundings you should pay attention to your horse’s behavior, and look for the moving red dot on the mini-map. A Shotgun with Slugs is recommended, pelt quality be damned.

Panther Location

The forests south of Bolger Glade is the only place to find a Panther.

The forests south of Bolger Glade is the only place to find a Panther.

  • Three Black-tailed Rabbits Skinned: These things are EVERYWHERE, except when this is a Daily Challenge . . . Don’t fret you’ll find enough to complete it yourself. More than enough Rabbits to go around.
  • 10 Flying Birds Killed: If it flaps it's wings, and can maintain flight, it will count toward this Challenge. Those Western Ravens and small birds will now be handy.
  • Four Whitetail Deer/Bucks Skinned: You can find these pretty much anywhere, as you probably already know since these are about as hunted as Rabbits. A good place to hunt Deer is around the plains of Emerald Ranch.
  • Two Bighorn Rams/Sheep Skinned: You can find Bighorns in the mountains of Cumberland Forest, West Elizabeth, and Ambarino. The desert variety appear around Rio Bravo and north of Tumbleweed in New Austin. Both Rams and Sheep count toward this challenge.
  • One Nine-Banded Armadillo Skinned: You’ll never guess where you can find these. Yep! Outside of Armadillo New Austin is a good place, as well as anywhere west of there. Listen for a pig type noise. I don’t mean like the sounds Peccaries make, I mean like a groggy “oink.”
  • Three Pronghorns Skinned: These suckers seem to be everywhere there’s wide open spaces. They’re very plentiful sometimes in herds of up to six. Unfortunately, the pelt doesn’t sell for much, which is why we don’t bother hunting them under usual circumstances.
  • Three North American Beavers Skinned: There are three places to hunt for Beaver (who by the way move unusually fast in Online). The guaranteed spot is Lake Owanjila which you’ll notice has everyone else here too . . . Ride along the shore of the lake and use a Varmint Rifle. You’ll more than likely have to switch sessions.
  • Three Ducks Skinned: If you have the Explosive Express Pamphlet then you know how often you shoot Ducks. Anywhere along the Dakota River and around the Heartlands Overflow is a pristine place to hunt for Ducks.

Duck Locations

Whenever I need to hunt Ducks (and/or farm Animal Fat) these are the locations where I look.

Whenever I need to hunt Ducks (and/or farm Animal Fat) these are the locations where I look.

  • Five Birds killed while on a moving train: Get on any moving train and stand at one of the flatbed cars. Using a weapon of your choosing shoot any five flying birds as you travel along. Do this in the daylight hours, not only is the lighting better but birds are more plentiful.
  • Five Perfect Pelts Sold: Look for animals that have three stars next to it’s name. They’re not common, but they’re not rare either. If you’re not hunting I’m sure you’re looking for these already. Just sell five at a Butcher to get this completed. (Note: Donating them to Cripps will not count toward this Challenge.)
  • Two Snakes Skinned: You know those little red dots that make your horse scared (for no real reason)? Shoot two and skin them.
  • Two Alpine Goats Skinned: Alpine Goats can be found on farms throughout the map. The best two locations being Emerald Ranch and Rathskeller Fork. You can usually find one at each of these locations. So you’ll have to switch sessions, but don’t feel bad about losing the pelt.

Goats Location

You are guaranteed to find one or two Alpine Goats here, animal spawn problems permitting . . .

  • Two North American Raccoons Skinned: Check around the forests of West Elizabeth at night. They are as common as Skunks and Opossums at this time of day. Unless they’re a daily challenge . . . Use a Varmint Rifle.
  • One Bear Killed/Skinned: This applies to either Grizzlies or Black Bears. Grizzlies can be found around Watson Station. Actually they can find YOU and you’re likely to require defending yourself. You can also skin a Black Bear but you’ll need to chase after it first. They’re more scared of you than the Grizzlies.

Bear Locations

Green section is where you can find a Grizzly. The blue is where you can find Black Bears. Though I would say leave the Black Bears alone. I'm not a liberal it's just it seems unfair shooting something that's running away . . . you know?

  • Eagle Plucked: You can find Eagles perched on the cliffs, and flying around, West Elizabeth during daylight hours. A good place to look is around Owanjila lake. Like other small animals use a Varmint Rifle, but a Repeater is useful depending on the range.

Eagle Locations

You are most likely to find Eagles in this area. There's a cliff overlooking Owanjila, the trails up and down Mount Shann, and the cliffs outside of Strawberry are all likely places. Of course you can also find them flying around here too . . .

  • Two American Badgers Skinned: You can find American Badgers around Bolger Gate Lemoyne and The Heartlands (south-east of Valentine) New Hanover. Try around evening and nighttime, riding around these areas, and use a Varmint Rifle.
  • Two Oxen Skinned: There is one spot, that I know of, with an Oxen. There is a small farm west of Emerald Ranch with a one behind the house (see screenshot below). Unlike other animal skinning Challenges this one always seems to be there. If it’s not just switch sessions.

Oxen Location

The little farm west of Emerald Ranch is a great place to find one. Even in a lobby full of other players there always seems to be one. That is if Rockstar doesn't do another purge of their "servers."

  • Five Small Animal Carcasses Broken Down: This Challenge covers any small animal that can fit in your Satchel; Frogs, Squirrels, Fish etc. Hold Right on the D-pad to open your Satchel, go to the Materials tab, then select the animal. Hold A/X to Break Down the carcass. Do this five times to complete this Challenge.
  • One Owl Plucked: Owls only come out at night and can be found flying many different areas of the map. Use Eagle Eye to spot it. A guaranteed spot is in Bayou Nwa Lemoyne, by the house that has two pieces of Jewelry in it (see screenshot below). If you didn’t see it switch sessions. Oh . . . and watch out for Alligators.

Owl Location

Outside of this house, at night, you can find an Owl flying around. You can find Owls flying at night in most areas, but this area is guaranteed.

  • Three Western Ravens: Finally these little bastards are useful for something! Coincidentally my aunt said that to me and my brother when we worked in her bakery for one summer . . . On topic there are plenty of these flying in the sky for everyone. You can also attract them by killing an animal. Give it a couple of minutes though, they’ll show up.
  • Three Wolves Killed/Skinned: You’re more likely to get attacked at night at the locations marked below. Unless this is a Daily Challenge in which case they almost never appear. Doing an “On The Hunt” Free Roam Mission from Trelawny in Rhodes Lemoyne.
  • Two Seagulls Plucked: It might be bad luck to kill a gull, but you’re a “land luber”, it won’t apply here. Go to the beaches around Flat Iron Lake or along the Lanachee River to find Seagulls. One trick to get two to spawn? Enter the Stables north of Van Horn Trading Post, then exit right back out. The game should spawn you outside, on the shore, with two Seagulls. Just don’t miss like I did . . .
  • Five Meat Sold: Apart from cooking you’ll mostly be using Meat to sell at the Butcher. If you’re into Hunting, and are trying to make money, you’ll do this one naturally.
  • Two Sheep Skinned: Sheep can be found at Emerald Ranch, and can be killed quietly with a Bow. As always if you see another player in the area, just switch sessions.
  • One Egret Skinned: This semi-rare bird has the highest selling plume in the game. So as you can imagine Rockstar makes it slightly hard to find. I mean I didn’t even know they had them in Online until I came across one in Lakay. I thought it was a glitch at first. Due to this level of rarity you’re probably going to be switching sessions a lot.

Egret Locations

Egrets are primarily found in Lemoyne. These are all areas where you're likely to find one. Just keep in mind they're much rarer in "Online" than they are in "Single Player."

  • Three Small Bird Carcasses Collected: As terrible as it is to shoot a Songbird, Cardinal, or Woodpecker (stop giggling) it comes in handy here. You can also act posh and hunt California Quail in the Great Plains region of West Elizabeth. Use a Varmint Rifle, it’s good for small animals.
  • Two Squirrels Collected: Like Western Chipmunks these are cute fluffy little critters running through forested areas, and other places with trees. Color variants come in red, grey, and black, but just like most shootings the bullets don’t discriminate.
  • Two Herons Skinned: You can find Herons around the swamps of Lemoyne. They also fly in flocks if the servers are working properly (see screenshot below).

Heron Locations

Everywhere in the green circle is where you can find Herons. The highlighted are where I've seen flocks, provided the servers are working properly.

  • Five Animals Killed With Throwing Weapons: Throwing Knives against Deer and Rabbits work great for this Challenge. If you can find a bird stooped at a location a Tomahawk works too, that is if you or another player don’t make it fly off first. Just stick to chasing down rodents with Throwing Knives . . .
  • Three Elk Skinned: You can find small herds of these around O’Creagh’s Run and other parts of Ambarino. There are also parts of West Elizabeth like Big Valley (or Tall Trees if you’re feeling Red Dead Redemption nostalgia). Remember you can use a Lasso from horseback and finish them with a Knife to not ruin the pelt quality. (See screenshots below)
  • One Collard Peccaries Skinned: New Austin’s answer to Wild Boars. If you hear pigs while riding through Rio Bravo they will be Collard Peccaries.
  • Two Whooping Cranes Plucked: You can find these white birds around the swamps of Lemoyne. Specifically near Lagras (see screenshot below). Not to be confused with Egrets which have a crown of feathers on their head. Of course both are a deeply majestic bird that shouldn’t be hunted but . . . here we are.

Whooping Crane Locations

The green dot is a good place to look for Whooping Cranes (if the server you're in is almost perfect). The green highlighted areas are other places to check too.

The green dot is a good place to look for Whooping Cranes (if the server you're in is almost perfect). The green highlighted areas are other places to check too.

  • One Cormorant Plucked: Ok so story time. I was in Chicago a couple months ago walking along the lake side and noticed, what I thought, was a duck. Turns out, thanks to what I’ve learned playing this game you can spot one of these by the shape of it’s head. Long story short, these little bastards are snobby when it comes to bread. In Red Dead Online you can find them, in the water, on the little island north of Thieves Landing and flying solo near Flatneck Station.
  • Two Geese Skinned: The best place to find Geese is west of Emerald Ranch flying in flocks (IF the server doesn’t suck). You can also find them flying over The Heartlands and around Flatneck Station. These birds are a great source of both Animal Fat and Plump Bird Meat.
  • Two Wild Boars Skinned: The pest of Texas that tastes great with barbecue sauce and a bit of horseradish. Great . . . now I’m hungry . . . Anyway you can find these in Lemoyne, West Elizabeth west of Strawberry, and just north of Thieves Landing New Austin. Listen for the distinctive pig noises.
  • Three Turkeys Skinned: Similar to Wild Boars they are not technically “rare”, but are better found in forested areas. Anywhere with thick trees such as Scarlet Meadows Lemoyne, Cumberland Forest New Hanover, and Tall Trees West Elizabeth. You can also find a rafter of these just over the Lemoyne/New Hanover state line heading north from the swamps.
  • Two Whitetail Deer/Bucks Killed With Bow: After Rank 10 you can purchase the Bow from a Gunshop or the Catalogue (hold left on D-pad). The Bow is a ballistic weapon just like anything else. Aim at the Deer/Buck and fire when you have a good shot. It might take two arrows depending on where you hit it. Even if you have to put it out of its misery make sure you do it with the Bow.
  • Three Condors Plucked: California Condors can only be found in the deserts of New Austin. They are a large bird with a wide wing span. It spawns in the daytime like other birds. Apart from the ones flying around there are two guaranteed places you can find them perched for an easier kill. However, like Vultures you should allow them to fly off first to avoid making their corpses unreachable.

Condor Locations

You can find one or two Condors at the Hanging Rock, north of Armadillo (upper right green smudge). You can also find a lone stationary Condor, perched on a rock, at Plainview (lower left green smudge).

You can find one or two Condors at the Hanging Rock, north of Armadillo (upper right green smudge). You can also find a lone stationary Condor, perched on a rock, at Plainview (lower left green smudge).

  • Two Cougars Killed/Skinned: If you ever played Red Dead Redemption then you probably still have the P.T.S.D. from riding through Rio Bravo. Of course in THAT game they seemed to just spawn continuously. If only we had that bit of code in Red Dead Online . . . The best place to find Cougars (since in this case we WANT to come across them) is in Roanoke Ridge New Hanover. An almost guaranteed spot being the forest east of Doverhill laboratory. The pelt quality doesn’t matter (unless you’re a Trader grinder) so have a shotgun ready.

Cougar Locations

Three places I have been "attacked" from Cougars all around the Doverhill lab. You can also ride up and down Roanoke Ridge, but this is where I always go. Switch sessions if necessary.

One Banded Gila Monster Skinned: Like California Condors and Desert Iguanas these little creatures are only found in the deserts of New Austin. A good place to look are on the roads heading west from Armadillo. Use the Varmint Rifle.

Two Western Chipmunks Collected: Like Squirrels these are a very tiny little creature that can be found scurrying along the forest floor. Though they are not as common as their nut loving cousins (giggity). A guaranteed place to find them is in the little forested area north of Bolger Glade and around the forest of Ringneck Creek, both in Lemoyne.

Chipmunk Locations

The green dot/smudge is where you can find at least two Chipmunks for this Challenge. The green highlighted area, Ringneck Creek, is also a good place to search.

  • Two American Bison Skinned: Such a joy while riding after the herd of these majestic beasts in Red Dead Redemption. The ridiculous amount of money you could make from taking those pelts to Escalera, and with the Hunting Expert Outfit . . . Luckily with Red Dead Redemption 2’s updated hunting mechanic makes bison genocide less likely. Also not always as profitable with the pelt qualities. There are three places on the whole map to find Bison, but the most likely area is in the Great Plains west of Blackwater West Elizabeth. Of course if you see other blue dots on the mini map switch sessions.
  • Two Roosters Skinned: Like a sailor on a weekend furlough finding these cocks can be a real pain in the ass. Luckily there are two definite locations where you can find them, but you’re going to be doing A LOT of session hopping. The farm at Emerald Ranch is the most popular spawn point but you can also find one at the chicken coup at Braithwaite Manor, Lemoyne (see screenshot below).

Rooster Location

The green dot of the Braithwaite Manor chicken coop. You can also find a rooster at the farm in Emerald Ranch.

  • Four California Valley Coyotes Killed/Skinned: In the evening you can find these dogs is packs of four or more roaming open areas. They never seem to attack so its likely you’ve rode past many of these critters in the past without firing a shot. Well that ends with this Challenge! Use a repeater for a clean-ish kill. Pelt quality isn’t really an issue since they don’t sell for much regardless.
  • Three Prairie Chickens Skinned: These are not very common and they look just like Pheasants. The best place to find them is down the road, heading east, from Valentine New Hanover to the crossroads south of Heartland Oil Fields. Expect to do some session hopping since they only appear one or two at a time. Riding up the road to Valentine and back can make them respawn too.

Prairie Chicken Location

Prairie Chickens can be found at the crossroads with the green dot. This is honestly the only known spot I can think of.

Prairie Chickens can be found at the crossroads with the green dot. This is honestly the only known spot I can think of.

  • Two Foxes Skinned: Foxes are very common in forested areas and have a distinct sound. They can also be found in the same places as Badgers, Opossums, and Skunks, but in the daytime hours.
  • Three American Bullfrogs Collected: American Bullfrogs can be found in the same wet areas as Western Toads and Muskrats. A good place to look is the swamps of Lemoyne.
  • 10 Animals Killed With a Bow: If it moves it can be shot with a Bow though animals are not low-level griefers so refrain from using Dynamite Arrows. Small Game Arrows are also very useful for animals small enough to fit in your Satchel. For the most part you’ll need to be Rank 10, or higher, and own the Bow to participate in this.
  • Three Pigs Skinned: There is one guaranteed spot for DOMESTIC Pigs, but you’re going to be doing some session changing to get all of them. You don’t need more than a revolver to kill them, but be advised you might get a wanted level if you plan to skin them. The location is the pig pen at Flatneck Station, but they can also be found at the pens in Valentine IF it’s not a total warzone (hint: it probably is).

Pig Locations

These green dots/smudges represent the three places you can find Pigs. However the far left, lower, spot at Flatneck Station where you have the best chance of finding them. The lower right is Emmet Granger's farm from "Story".

Note: The following Challenge was added with the Naturalist update.

  • Two Bulls Skinned: Bulls can be found at Emerald Ranch, but you have a better chance of finding them at the farm east of Maddock Pond (see screenshot below). They will be in their own pen at the south-east end of the farm.

Bull Location

PVE Challenges

"PvE" stands for "Player versus Environment" meaning you will be focusing on killing computer-operated AI in these challenges. Personally, this is the way I prefer it, and it's a shame that the term "PvP" is so popular that we need a designation for "how games use to be." Regardless these challenges require you to take on enemies in various ways.

  • Three Non-player Enemies Grappled to the Ground: Go to Thieves Landing New Austin. Focus on the Del Lobo gang members that are away from other people. Run toward them and press Y/Triangle as you’re about to run into them. This will tackle them to the ground for the Challenge.
  • Successfully Fended off an Ambush: An ambush occurs as you’re riding along, certain areas, and are attacked by a large group of angry red dots. These are sometimes disguised as a random stranger on the side of the road. These seem to occur at any time of day, and in several areas, but the one that works without fail is at the Upper Montana River (yellow dot in the second screenshot below). If it doesn’t occur change to another session.
  • Escorted Someone in need: As you’re riding about a yellow dot will pop up on the mini map representing a stranded traveler. Beware that these can also be Ambushes in disguise, so have a Repeater at the ready. However, if they end up just being legit press X/Square to accept the escort and ride them to their destination.
  • Five Non-player Enemies Killed While in Dead Eye: While you’re locked on to an enemy press the Right Stick button/R3 to activate Dead Eye. Then just shoot your enemy as you normally would.
  • Three Free Roam Missions Completed: Just head to any of the orange dots on the map and press X/Square to accept the character’s mission. Depending on the character you may gain or lose honor.
  • Five Non-player Enemies Stealth Killed/While Not Seen: Throwing knives (unlocked at Rank 8) and the Bow (unlocked at Rank 10) with Standard Arrows seem to work best here. Tomahawks sometimes register but not always in my experience. Climb on to the roof of the building in the screenshot below and “snipe” a lone Del Lobos gang member. If all of Thieves Landing isn’t on alert by this point do it again with one of the guys in the yard below. When you have officially pissed off the entire settlement either switch sessions or shoot your way out. After the gunsmoke settles, and everyone has reset, repeat your “stealth kills” until you complete the Challenge.  After the Naturalist update this Challenge may have been changed due to the stealth system being revamped. The wording of this Daily might be different but the method for completing it remains the same.

The view of the yard from on top of the Fence’s building.

  • Three Non-player Enemy Hats Shot Off: Even though it says “non-player,” this Challenge registers with rival players during a Free Roam Event. While going for a headshot aim up slightly to shoot off the hat of your target. This can be tricky but can be done unintentionally while going for a legit headshot.
  • Five Non-player Enemies Trampled: Free Roam missions, Campsite Defenses, Ambushes, Rescues, and Story Missions are all times where you can do this. If the enemy is on a horse (like during a Campsite Defense) shoot the horse to “help” them dismount! You can also run over the Del Lobo gang members on the bridge at Thieves Landing, it will still count.
  • Three Non-player Enemies Killed with a Maxim Gun: One guaranteed way to do this is through the Story Mission “Kill Them, Each and Every One”. Once you get the armored suit run for one of the two mounted machine guns by the entrance to Fort Mercer. If you don’t get enough kills replay the mission a little later (there’s a cool down between replaying missions). If you have low honor firstly, shame on you! Secondly, there is a Story Mission, “Kerosene, Tar, and Greed” with a Maxim Gun, mounted on a train, and plenty of enemies to kill. Just make sure to share with your partner/teammates or Trevor Fortnite will try to blow you up with Dynamite. This can also be done in Free Roam, but only at specific Gang Hideouts. Good luck getting those Hideouts to spawn though . . . There are also a couple Hard Bounty Hunts and the last Moonshiner story mission has an opportunity to do this.
  • Two Gang Hideouts Cleared: This is the most god damn frustrating Daily Challenge! Expect to spend most of your day riding around the map trying to complete this one! What makes it worse is certain Gang Hideouts only appear at specific times of day, factor in that everyone else is trying to do this same Challenge, and you have a recipe for a lot of session hopping. Below are screenshots of the Gang Hideouts I know of, but keep in mind they won’t always appear. New Austin is a good region of the map for this one since it has the largest number of possible spawns.
  • Escaped the Law: It’s harder than you think to get the Law after you, short of gunning down a couple NPCs that is. You can’t just ride out of the red wanted zone, the Law needs to actually spot and chase you for this to count.
  • Go On-Call and Complete a Story Mission: Press Left on the D-pad and scroll down to “Quick Join.” Select to “go on-call for a Story Mission.” Before you do this you should have your weapons set the way you want them. Unlike GTA Online the matchmaking is pretty fast.
  • Story Mission Completed: There is at least three ways to do this one. The best is to press left on the D-pad, go to Quick Join, and select “go on-call for a Story Mission.” This will give you a random mission to play. You can also select a specific mission by “pausing” the game, go to Progress, and select Story Missions. Either way you need to COMPLETE the mission to beat this Challenge.
  • Five Non-player Enemies Lassoed from Horseback: Any red dots (that are human) will do for this if you’re playing some missions or activity. You can also pester the Del Lobos at Thieve’s Landing. Equip your Lasso, target an enemy, and snatch them. You don’t need to drag them to register, but you do need to be riding your horse.
  • Rescued Someone in Need: As you explore the map you’ll come across a random event where someone will ask for your help to save someone, or you may come across the victim randomly while riding about. You have a great chance of finding one of these events at night in Saint Denis. There are three of them in this city alone that can pop up (see screenshots below). Note: The below screenshots do not show locations for Rescues related to animals or runaway wagons. These types were added after the Frontier Pursuits update. The animals are bullet sponges and the runaway wagons don't give you enough time to stop them. You also only get $10 for these side activities so I'll just let you find these on your own. Not that their worth it.
  • Five Non-player Enemies Killed from the Hip: While in a shootout press the Right Trigger/R2 to auto aim at an enemy without holding Left Trigger/L2. This will make your character shoot from the hip with any weapon. If you want to really feel like an old-west badass use a revolver.
  • Five Non-player Enemies Killed at Long-Range: You don’t need a scoped rifle to perform this, but it does help . . . Using a long gun you feel confident with just shoot enemies from a fair distance away. The kind of takedowns that give you the “Long Distance” XP bonus. The Del Lobos at Thieves’ Landing can be sniped from across the water. Historically it’s neat to get the drop on the gang members in the Pike’s Basin Hideout (IF it spawns). If your targets are on even ground this will count as long as you’re far enough away.
  • Defended a Campsite: As you ride around the game world you will hear shooting. No, I mean apart from griefers killing each other and Cody Apex Legends working on his K/D ratio. There will be NPC events where a campsite, with travelers, will be holding off bandits. Intervene on-foot or from horseback, and save these folks from the onslaught. You will get a small reward of cash and XP, but more importantly you will beat this Daily Challenge.
  • Two Enemies Stowed on Horseback: After you have had a large shootout (or even a minor one) with enemy NPCs put them on the back of your horse . . . One at a time of course . . . Pretty much NEED to do this with Frontier Pursuits’ Bounty Hunting Role.
  • Five Non-Player Enemies Killed While in Cover: There is a possibility that you will do this Challenge without even knowing it. Take cover behind any object with Right Bumper/R1 and pop out to shot enemies. Sometimes these won’t register so you might have to shoot more than five enemies.

Note: The following Challenges were added after the Naturalist update.

  • Five Non-Player Enemies Knocked Out: Go to Thieves Landing and pick a fight with one of the many Del Lobo gang members there. They will soon draw guns and start shooting, and you will likely get killed a couple times, but just keep tapping B/Circle until you get the "Knockout" XP notification.
  • (Character) Mission Completed: Go to any of the Stranger Character icons, corresponding with this Challenge, and do one of their missions. Keep in mind you will either gain or lose Honor depending on who they are.
  • Helped Someone In Need: This is not only a consolidation of Rescues and Escorts (the blue dots), but also count for giving a coin to a Beggar (whom can be found randomly in Blackwater and Saint Denis).

PvP Challenges

The vain of modern gaming, in these Challenges you need to take on Kyle Cod and Trevor Fortnite in various game modes. Self-explanatory but should be put at the bottom of your list of "things to do" in terms of dailies. If you can't get some of these don't feel bad about it. Keep in mind that you're not required to win every Showdown/Race/Free Roam Event. So if you come in second don't take it to heart, not that you should be taking THAT seriously, to begin with . . .

  • Three Player Kills from Cover in Showdowns/Free Roam Events: While in any Showdown mode press Right Bumper/R1 to take cover by an object. Get three kills (doesn’t have to be consecutively), with any weapon, to get this Challenge.
  • Three Players Killed with Explosives in Showdowns/Free Roam Events: Once you unlock Dynamite at Rank 16 make sure to have a full supply of them.  Also, Explosive shotgun slugs (Pamphlet unlocked at Rank 84), Explosive rounds (Pamphlet unlocked at Rank 90), and Dynamite Arrows (Pamphlet unlocked at Rank 93) also count. If you manage to get players in a cluster that works too. In fact, that would be ideal . . .
  • Three Player Kills with Melee in Showdowns/Free Roam Events: Either using fists, executions, or tackles/grapples seem to count toward this. I recommend using one of the weapons you can buy at the Fence (like the Machete, which is unlocked at Rank 32, for example).
  • Finish Showdown in [Last Stand/Elimination/Takeover/Shootout] Series: Pause the game and go to Online. Select the listed game mode and play a round of it. If the Challenge doesn’t register, play the next round. If you enter a match halfway through it won’t count as a “Finish.”
  • Three Player Kills with Thrown Weapons in Free Roam Events/Showdowns: From what I’ve noticed Dynamite won’t count because that falls under “Explosives”, but Fire Bottles (unlocked at Rank 24) and Tomahawks (unlocked at Rank 36) count toward this Challenge. Don’t try to get players clustered together, or spam Fire Bottles, just concentrate on one kill at a time.
  • Placed top three or on Winning Team in Showdowns: Not that hard, but might take a while to place with a winning team. Best done with Showdown Series “small” to cut down on the number of teams.
  • Three Player Kills in Dead Eye in Showdowns/Free Roam Events: Everyone has a different opinion about what is the best Ability Card for Dead Eye (hint: it’s Slow and Steady), but what’s for certain is that you’re probably already using this to fight other players regardless. Press in on the Right Stick/R3 to activate Dead Eye while aiming.
  • Kill Multiple Players in Five Seconds in Showdown/Free Roam Events: If you manage to kill a couple players with Dynamite you’ll get this, but you only need to get a couple of quick headshots in succession for this to register too.
  • Kill X Players in Showdowns/Free Roam Events: If you’re in a game mode that requires combat against other players then you’ll complete this one naturally.
  • Two Free Roam Events Played: These can be ANY Free Roam Event. Even the frustrating animal related challenges . . . When you get the notification get your loadout the way you want it before accepting. Some Events won’t let you access your horse once they start. Some Events won’t require combat with other players.
  • Finish a Mode in a Featured Series: What makes this one interesting is you never know which one you’ll get. Press Left on the D-pad, then go to “Quick Join” and select “Featured Series.” Complete whatever game mode you’re thrown into.
  • Three Showdown Series Played: After the Frontier Pursuits update there is no “Showdown Series” or “Showdown Series Large” selection in the Online menu. However playing “Takeover Series” seems to be the only one that makes this Challenge register.
  • Placed Top Three with a Score in Free Roam Events: The one can be tricky depending on the game mode. I’m honestly not so much of an expert at PVP where I can give you “tips and secrets” on how to win every one of these modes. Press down on the D-pad during a match to see where you are in the leaderboard. Also get familiar with Tonic usage and the Ability Cards. Tonics, being a part of a game with RPG elements, seems to piss off the Call of Duty crowd.
  • Placed Top Three in a Race: The best advice I can give you here is buy a fast horse. With all of the Gold you’ll be making that won’t be hard, but seriously it will make all of the difference. I recommend a Missouri Fox Trotter, though an Arabian or Turkoman is also great for racing. If you’re below Rank 40 just ignore Races altogether. Of course your shooting skill determines your luck with target shooting contests, and they count as Races, so it’s up to you.
  • Player Kills from the Hip in Showdowns: While in any Showdown mode press Right Trigger/R2 without holding Left Trigger/L2 to shoot an opponent from the hip. A Pump Action Shotgun is great for this Challenge, but you probably already knew that . . .
  • Showdown Series Won: Any of the Showdown modes will do. Playing with a winning team will register this one naturally.
  • Feuds Won/Three Feuds Started or Accepted: This is the same as One-on-One Deathmatches in GTA Online. Basically two idiots (yes you as well) have to agree to start this little game mode. Like all other Challenges in this category I think you should just skip it. The less you are fighting with other players in Free Roam the better.
  • Two Players Killed in Five Seconds: During a Showdown score two headshots, or blow up a small group of rival players with one stick of Dynamite. Also blasting a few with a shotgun in rapid succession counts. Any number of possibilities work with this one!
  • Ten Players Killed with [Gun]: Oh wow! Gee! I wonder how you’ll manage to figure this Challenge out!

Posse Challenges

The currently broken-ish Daily Challenge genre is probably one of the lesser used features in Red Dead Online. After PVP Challenges you should just leave these at the rock-bottom of your list of priorities unless you have some dedicated friends that have the game. Even then some of these Challenges just won't register. Don't worry I've been frustrated by these too.

  • Three Players Revived: I didn’t know where else to put this so I figured I would categorize it under the most frustrating Daily Challenges. Unless you have a friend willing to volunteer getting downed them three times this one could take a while. I can tell you from experience that downed players don’t last long enough for you to revive them. This one is really is a damn shame since there’s not enough team work and/or trust for this Challenge to be done organically in this game.
  • One Posse Infighting Completed: As I mentioned above the Posse related Daily Challenges can be glitched, but this one appears to be impossible. No matter how many times you switch sessions it will still be grayed out. I really hope Rockstar patches this.
  • Herb Picking Contest Complete: It might require a couple of session skips but eventually you can launch this simple competition in which you race your Posse to pick the most herbs. If you collect the maximum remember you can hold Y/Triangle to Eat a plant. Yum . . .
  • X Distance Traveled with a Posse Member by Coach: Steal a wagon and drive the distance with your Posse member as a passenger, or as the driver, whichever.
  • Multiple Player Kills in five seconds in Posse Versus: You’ll need at least two Posse members for this one; preferably two buddies who actually have a sense of organization. Just have them stand next to each other and use headshots. Then just hope they’re not obsessed with their K/D ratio . . .
  • Three Posse Races Completed: Place a Waypoint on the Map then under Posse Versus select “Race Posse.” Like other Posse Versus game modes this has a “maybe” chance of working.
  • One Posse Joined: Chances are you’re getting random invites anyway. If not pause the game, go to Online, and select Posse Up. This will put you in another session, and automatically into a Posse.
  • Bird Shooting Contest Completed: One of the Posse Versus modes that actually works. Once started shoot every flying bird you can.
  • Hunt The Leader Completed: Hunt the Leader is similar to GTA Online’s “Executive Search” VIP/CEO Work. Except Red Dead Online requires you have at least one other Posse member before you can launch it. Also don’t be in Defensive mode or else it won’t activate. You get two minutes to ride to the location, then you have to survive in the radius for five minutes to complete this Challenge.
  • Three Player Headshot Kills/Three Player Kills in Posse Versus: Unlike the “multiple player kills in 5 seconds” Challenge these headshots don’t have to be consecutive. In fact you can use other players, outside of your Posse, if they get involved in the shootout. Nothing speaks community like other players who can’t mind their own business.
  • X Distance Traveled by Boat with Posse Member: You can find boats around Flat Iron Lake that can be taken from their owners. Steam boats don’t count for some reason; yes I learned that the hard way . . .
  • X Distance Traveled on a Mount with a Posse Member: Press Y/Triangle to ride with a fellow Posse member. Want to have fun with it? Press X/Square to jump on their horse when riding close by.
  • Biggest Fish Contest Completed: The honest joys of relaxing fishing. Now co-op with a side of competition. Go to any of the many fishing spots (i.e. “large bodies of water”) and launch this. Whoever catches the fish with the most weight wins.

Role Challenges

With the Frontier Pursuits update comes some new Roles to make Online a little less boring. The Trader, Collector, Bounty Hunter, Moonshiner, and Naturalist Roles add on an extra form of profitability but also a new set of Daily Challenges. With each Role comes three Role Challenges. After the Naturalist update doing any nine Role Challenges will award you with the same bonus as completing the General Dailies. Doing just one of these Role Challenges will keep your Daily Streak alive. Some are not available until you have unlocked a certain Rank and/or bought the required equipment for the corresponding Role. For the most part, they are self-explanatory, but some pose problems (i.e. glitches) that are not explained.

  • X Bounties Brought in From [State]: Do not use the same Bounty Board twice! For example, if the Challenge says "West Elizabeth" got to Strawberry, then Watson Station, etc. The game won't count bounties from the same location, regardless of difficulty.
  • Three [Collectible Item] Found: Once you have the location for Madam Nazaar buy the corresponding Collector Map for whatever item that's listed. That part is easy; the reason for bringing it up is that it sometimes resets if you switch sessions. So make sure you collect all three of the Collectibles or else you'll have to redo this Challenge.
  • More than one Bounty Target Brought in at Once: You'll need either a Posse or the Bounty Wagon for this one. There will be bounties with more than one target listed. You'll need to do three of these. On the plus side if you bring in five of them at once you'll get the "5 Bounties brought in" Challenge done in one swoop . . . DO NOT try to do a double bounty without a Bounty Wagon, the game will think one of the targets escaped.
  • 20 Carcasses Sold Within 10 Minutes: Donating carcasses to Cripps doesn’t count. You must sell to a Butcher. Also fish unfortunately don’t count for this Challenge (I tried, believe me). Having the Hunting Wagon would make this easier. Luckily small birds, and other animals that fit in your Satchel (that aren’t fish of course . . . ) will register.
  • Three Eagle Eye Used to Track a Bounty Target: The only time you can truly track a Bounty Target is during the Bounty Hunts where you have to search the yellow radius. Enter Eagle Eye and press Right Bumper/R1 to track the bounty target. Do that three times to beat this Challenge, but you can’t always get these Bounty missions.
  • Antique Alcohol Drunk (Collector): As you play through the game you will recover Antique Alcohol Bottles. You can get these either by exploring around or looting them off of fallen enemies. They can be sold to Madam Nazaar like other Collectibles but I recommend hoarding them specifically for this Challenge. To drink an Antique Alcohol hold right on the D-pad to enter your Satchel. They will be in the Antique Alcohol Bottles section under the Collectibles tab.
  • Ten Carcasses Donated Within 10 Minutes (Trader): Unlike the “Sell 20 Carcasses in 10 minutes” Challenge this one will actually benefit your Camp. Same rules still apply though, fish and bodies from the Hunting Wagon will not count toward the quarry.
  • Donated Deadly Predator Carcass or Skin (Trader): Yes Snakes are red dots on the radar, no, they don’t count as predators for this. However if you’re willing to go after reptiles Alligators always count as predators.
  • Drank Own Average or Higher Strength Moonshine (Moonshiner): Average strength recipes are two-star while the stronger ones are three-star. You probably already knew that, but did you know you need the bar extension to actually drink your shine? Well to do this Challenge get Marcel to make a two or three-star moonshine. Then go behind your bar and hold X/Square to pour yourself a cup.
  • Drunken Player Interaction (Moonshiner): Lock onto a player, in a Moonshine Shack's bar and either Greet (hug) or Antagonize (slap) them. You will need to have had a few shots of Moonshine for this to register.
  • Moonshine of a Preferred Type Sold to Buyer (Moonshiner): Even if you do a Moonshine selling mission, to a preferred buyer, this does not seem to register after the Naturalist update.
  • Get Samples From Two Legendary Animals (Naturalist): Yes the spawns for these beasts are pretty bad, but you can collect Samples by playing the Free Roam Events “Protect Legendary Animal” and “Wild Animal Tagging”. Both game modes net you a Legendary Animal Sample, but you need to be Rank 5 of the Naturalist Role to access these.
  • Attracted a Legendary Animal with Pheromones (Naturalist): Legendary Animal Pheromones are best purchased from Harriet Davenport’s shop. Yes you can craft them at Rank 10 of the Naturalist Role, but that would require BUYING the pamphlet. Regardless these don’t work in my experience, and you’re better off not wasting your time.
Only nine Role Challenges are required to get the additional daily bonus.

Only nine Role Challenges are required to get the additional daily bonus.

Awards

There are several tasks in-game which award XP once you have hit a milestone. Most Awards come in tasks of 10, 50, 100, 500, and 1,000 while others come in intervals of 5, 25, 50, 75, and 100. Completing all goals the first time will unlock a Belt Buckle, which is a cosmetic item. In my opinion, the real award is holding down the X/Square button and receiving 0.4 Gold Nuggets. You can only reset Awards ten times, BUT that’s four Gold Bars per Award! Please note that some of these Awards will take some time, while others can be grinded, but I don't recommend spending all of your time on one Award. Why take the fun out of the game?

Sharpshooter Awards:

There are 121 Awards, but only six of them can’t be reset. I figured I would tell you that to save from listing them ALL out. All of them you will most likely unlock throughout the game's lifetime since shooting stuff is combat's major feature. They’re also mostly self-explanatory. Keep in mind that where the game refers to “enemies” they mean hostile NPCs AND rival players. The more vague ones are:

  • Kill Players From Behind: This isn’t as hard as it sounds since most PVP situations will allow you to shoot a distracted player while they’re trying to fight someone else.
  • Get Executions: Grapple an NPC (yeah it can be any innocent bystander, unfortunately) while equipped with a Knife and press Right Trigger/R2 to execute them. In a PVP or PVE situation rapidly tap the B/Circle button.
  • Get Hatshots: For me, these seem to happen at random. When you go for a headshot aim a little higher to shoot off the hat, it also counts if a player has the Never Without One Ability Card.

Combat Awards:

There are only 55 Awards in this category, but they all seem like offshoots of the Sharpshooter Awards. As with the category these shouldn’t be grinded and will be completed hopefully throughout the course of the game’s lifetime.

  • Kill Enemies by Firing From the Hip: Let go of the Left Trigger/L2 and you will fire much faster from the hip. Great for close range fanning of the Cattleman Revolver.
  • Run down Enemies with Coach/Trample Enemies to death with Horse/Kill Enemies with Mounted Weaponry: These don’t happen often though you have a chance during missions.
  • Counter While Brawling: While in a fistfight press X/Square just as your opponent punches, then immediately press B/Circle to return a punch as they’re stunned.
  • Kill Enemies After You Have Died: Works more with PVP related scenarios. Down another player, set them on fire, toss a stick of Dynamite, or have them bleeding/critically injured just before you get killed will count toward this. A semi-rare occurrence.
  • Kill Enemies While Intoxicated: You will pick up a lot of alcohol provisions while looting dead enemies. Drink four or five of them before getting into a shootout.

Hunting Awards:

There are only 11 of these, and most of them you'll do automatically if you're trying to make cash money in Red Dead Online.

  • Kill two Animals in an Explosion: The best time to do this is at any fishing spot (preferably AFTER you're done fishing at it). Throw a stick of Dynamite toward any part of the water that has bubbles coming up. An easy four GB.
  • Kill Medium Animals with a Knife: Instead of using a Rifle on Deer, Elk, and Bighorns capture them with your Lasso. Hold Left Trigger/L2 until you're close then press B/Circle to knife them. You can also use your Knife on Alligator Snapping Turtles.

Survivalist Awards:

There are only five of these, and are all self explanatory. Although I should point out that the Equine Assistance Skill, added with Frontier Pursuits, will NOT count toward the "Pick herbs" Award. You'll need to do those on foot.

Crime Awards:

There are seven of these (three of them being added after Frontier Pursuits) but I’ll leave it up to you to decide if these are worth grinding. You’ll lose a lot of Honor in the process.

  • Spend time in Jail: In order to do this one you’ll need to amass a bounty by shooting Lawmen (thus you can do the “Survive a wanted level” and “Lose a wanted level” Awards in the process). Don’t go over $20 or you’ll attract the attention of rival players who will most likely just kill you rather than take you in to jail. When Bounty Hunters come after you surrender to be sent to jail.
  • Evade Bounty Hunters: Rather than surrender to Bounty Hunters you can escape them. This also counts for player bounty hunters if you have a bounty of more than $20.

Travel Awards:

There are 13 of these, but only seven can be reset. You really shouldn’t grind these since you’ll most likely unlock them throughout the lifetime of the game.

  • Travel by Train: You can either DRIVE the train or just stand idle on it.
  • Travel by Canoe: Unfortunately it seems like you need to be rowing a canoe; powered boats and the row boat don’t seem to count toward miles “sailed”.
  • Jumped From a Horse onto a Moving Train: Ride along the side of a moving train press X/Square to have your character leap to the train car, then while facing your horse press X/Square to jump back onto it. Rinse and repeat as you ride to your destination.
  • Travel by Coach: This one is actually much easier to do after the Frontier Pursuits update. Driving your Hunting or Bounty Wagons will count toward this.

Trade Awards:

There are 11 of these, and you’ll be doing these naturally if you’re trying to make cash money in Red Dead Online.

  • Purchase Consumable Items: Anything you buy from a General Store, Doctor, or the Catalog that can be used to refill your Cores counts. Some items that can be fed to your horse also count as consumables.
  • Collect Items From Your Delivery Box: This only counts with the Camp’s delivery box. Good luck getting Cripps to pitch it . . .

General Awards:

There are nine of these Awards and they mainly pertain to Daily Challenges. Which is useful since . . . you know . . . I pretty much cover all of those above?

Horse Awards:

There are only three of these, and none of them can be reset for Gold.

Posse Awards:

There are five of these and it’s a pain trying to get randoms to join your Posse. Most of these Awards are self-explanatory. However what the game means by “Get posse assists” is the same as getting a kill assist in Showdown modes. Which is probably something you figured out already, but what the hell at least you know I know right?

Free Roam Awards:

There are eight of these and as you can already figure out, they shouldn't be grinded. You’ll do these naturally if somehow, by the grace of God, Rockstar actually gets their servers in check. It will seem like a lot of these events won’t spawn no matter how much you ride around. Though over the course of the game’s lifetime I’m sure we’ll get Gold from them.

Competitive Awards:

There are 13 of these Awards and pertain mainly to PVP game modes (hence the name). I’m not a dick to other players, and I’m not obsessive about PVP in any free roam online game, so I can’t give you strategies on how to get Gold from these. Though all of the Awards are self-explanatory, I’d recommend leaving each other alone.

  • Win Feuds/Posse Feud: A Feud becomes an option after two players have killed each other enough times to initiate it. Similar to Parley, Press Charges, and Respawn. This begins a small 1v1 game mode similar to One on One Deathmatches in GTA Online.

Bounty Hunter Awards:

Added with the Frontier Pursuits update there are seven new Awards (three of which can be reset for Gold). As well as making Cash money, this is the only new Role that can also earn you Gold Nuggets for completing bounties. Consider them another form of Free Roam Mission.

  • Turn in Living Bounty Target: Not too hard to do but I recommend unlocking the Reinforced Lasso at Bounty Hunter level 1. You can run up to your bounty and press B/Circle to do an immediate takedown/hogtie. After you dispatch their allies, Stow the bounty on your horse and take them to jail. If going after multiple targets you’ll need a Posse and/or Bounty Wagon.
  • Turn in Player Bounty Targets: If a player has a bounty of over $20 the game will send you a notification. If you accept the invite a game mode will start where you need to track down and capture that player.

Collector Awards:

Added with the Frontier Pursuits update there are 11 new Awards (most of which can be reset for Gold). Like most Awards these should not be grinded; both because it will take a while and also because you’ll kill the fun of it.

Trader Awards:

Added with the Frontier Pursuits update there are six new Awards (four of which can be reset for Gold). If you’re heavily into the Trader Role you’ll complete most of these Awards regularly.

  • Complete Resupply Missions: You can opt to Purchase Supplies for $20, which in hindsight is more convenient, however, you’ll rob yourself of Gold if you do.
  • Make Stews at Camp: For this one, you’ll need the Stew Pot which is available after Trader level 1. Its $650/28 GB but worth having for boosting your Cores, and for doing the Daily Challenges that pertain to you making Cripps’ Special Stew or eating three Stews. You can make it by holding Y/Triangle to open the Recipes menu. For normal Stews, you will require animal meat—and the quality of which will determine the quality of Stew cooked.

Moonshiner Awards:

The Moonshiner role brings seven new Awards. Four of these Awards can be reset.

  • Times Intoxicated by your Own Moonshine: This requires the Bar expansion for your Moonshine Shack. Go to the barrels, or behind the bar, and pour yourself some of your own shine. Keep doing this until your character starts to slouch. You can then sober up by eating Almonds or drinking Coffee.
  • Serve Moonshine to Players at a Bar: This also requires the Bar expansion, and some participation from the player community. Spam invites to your Moonshine Shack. Get behind the bar and hold Y/Triangle to Serve drinks onto the bar. Press Left and Right Bumper/L1 and R1 to place shots on the bar.

Naturalist Awards:

The Naturalist role brings ten new Awards. Eight of these Awards can be reset. Most of them are self explanatory but not easy to complete due to the conditions for spawning Legendary Animals.

  • Tonics Used: These do not refer to normal tonics. Any Tonic you can buy from Harriet's shop count toward this Award. Animal Reviver and Blending Tonic work for me.
