How to Find Smithing Stones [1], [2], and [3] in "Elden Ring"

Matt Bird writes all sorts of nonsense, but he dedicates a large chunk of his time to writing game walkthroughs.

Upgrading your weapons is key to your long-term survival in Elden Ring, and among other things, you'll use Smithing Stones to do the job. Found throughout the world, Smithing Stones are precious commodities that become more common the further you get into the game. Early on they are difficult to find, however, and if you spend them unwisely, you may be stuck with a weak weapon for the first few bosses. Not an enviable position.

This guide will help you track down the first three stages of Smithing Stones. You'll probably find that Smithing Stones [1] are the hardest to find without help, and that can really put a damper on the first dozen hours of Elden Ring.

Your first Smithing Stone [1] is found on the anvil at the Church of Elleh Site of Grace, very close to where you begin the game. In all likelihood the Tree Sentinel will chase you here. From this point on you're hard up for Smithing Stones, however, and you'll want to do some targeted searching to track more down. You'll need twelve in all to get a weapon to +3, which is a good place to be for the first mandatory boss.

There are two places to pick Smithing Stones [1] up quickly in Limgrave. Between the two of them you should be set for a single weapon. Spend them wisely.

Limgrave Tunnels

Your best bet for getting early Smithing Stones [1] is Limgrave Tunnels. This small dungeon is located just south of the Gatefront Ruins, at the northern tip of Agheel Lake. You'll find the Tunnels at the bottom of the cliffs. Beware of the giant crabs that sometimes come after you in this area.

Limgrave Tunnels is full of miners who will largely ignore you until you start plundering their riches - which is to say, the yellow deposits on the walls. If you're feeling skittish you can grab these items and run past all of the miners, which is probably advisable for the ones that launch flames at you. At the bottom of the dungeon is a Stonedigger Troll boss fight, though you don't need to fight it to get all the Smithing Stones [1].

Stormveil Trolls

Your other option is to exploit the Trolls that patrol the cliffs near Stormveil Castle. Go north of the Gatefront Ruins, up the hills and past the warriors on horseback, to find a current of air that will shuttle you and your horse up onto the cliffs. This area is patrolled by Trolls, and they will happily gang up on you if you give them the chance.

In the midst of the Trolls is a small statue that's sitting by itself. If you can lure one of the Trolls over to it and get it to attack the statue will smash, revealing five Smithing Stones [1]. This is a dangerous pastime, though if you get the Trolls to hit each other they will begin to brawl, giving you a chance to escape.

Stormveil Castle

There are many places you can pick up one or two Smithing Stones [1], though the next best place is Stormveil Castle itself. They're found irregularly on the grounds. You'll need to fight past Margit the Fell Omen to access the Castle, however, so hopefully you have enough Smithing Stones [1] by this point.

Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel

Your next best location for getting the first three Smithing Stones is the Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel. Located in the Liurnia of the Lakes region, the Crystal Tunnel is a small, easily-missed spot that you should absolutely prioritize visiting once you beat Godrick the Grafted and get past Stormveil Castle.

The Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel is a long ride to the northeast of the vast swamp that comprises most of the region. Hop on your horse and gallop along the eastern cliffs, avoiding everything you can, until you start seeing large, blue crystals ahead. This is a sign that you're headed in the right direction. You'll know you're there when you see a massive, walking building and an updraft to get you onto the cliffs. Check along the base of the cliffs for the entrance.

The Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel is another mining dungeon, though with a smattering of deadlier enemies as well. Still, the path through is pretty straightforward, and there are plenty of Smithing Stones of all three types along the way. Grab anything that gleams yellow and make your way to the very bottom of the dungeon.

Here you'll face off against a Crystalian, a gracefully boss with edged ringblades. Your attacks may not appear to be doing much damage, but once you stagger the Crystalian you'll chew through its health quickly. Not too difficult all around. Beating the Crystalian will earn you the Smithing-Stone Miner's Bell Bearing [1].

Head to Roundtable Hold and check the side corridors for a small room with two ghastly-looking figures. These are the Twinmaiden Husks, and despite their... lack of life... they act as merchants. Given them the Smithing-Stone Miner's Bell Bearing [1] and they will thereafter sell you unlimited amounts of Smithing Stones [1] and [2]. Between these and the Smithing Stones you picked up in the Crystal Tunnel you should now have more than enough to make a formidable weapon for the next few areas.
