The Shadowy Threat Grows

February was a busy month for Pokémon GO trainers, and it’s looking like March is shaping up to be the same way! Niantic has announced a whole slew of events for the month, so let’s just start at the beginning.

Beginning March 1st, 2020, trainers will have access to the Team Go Rocket research task, “The Shadowy Threat Grows,” provided they have completed the previous Rocket Research quests. The most recent task, “A Professor’s Work is Never Done,” gave trainers the opportunity to rescue Shadow Raikou from the clutches of Giovanni and his minions. Completing the Rocket Research this time around will lead to a final encounter with Giovanni and the chance to rescue the next of the Legendary Beasts, Shadow Entei.

A Month of Legendary Raid Weekends!

Beginning March 2nd, 2020, Thundurus will take over as the new Legendary Tier Five Raid Boss. The Flying/Electric Gen 5 Legendary will be replacing Armored Mewtwo in Five Star Raids beginning at 4 p.m. ET.

In addition to Thundurus, every weekend will have a special Legendary Raid Boss as well.

From Friday, March 6, 2020 at 8 a.m. local time, until Monday, March 9, 2020 at 10 p.m. local time, Darkrai will be returning to Five Star raids! Darkrai is a powerful Dark type Mythical Pokémon, and this time trainers will have the opportunity to encounter a shiny Darkrai.

The following weekend, from Friday, March 13, 2020 at 8 a.m. until Monday, March 16, 2020 at 10 p.m., altered form Giratina will be appearing in Five Star Raids. Giratina is currently a top choice in both Ultra and Master League PVP, and trainers will have the opportunity to encounter a shiny Giratina as well.

The raids keep on coming, and on Friday, March 20, 2020 at 8 a.m. until Monday, March 23, 2020 at 10 p.m., the Legendary Pokémon Cobalion, from the Swords of Justice trio, will be making its return to Five Star Raids and will know the exclusive move, Sacred Sword. Trainers will also have the opportunity to encounter shiny Cobalion for the first time.

Finally, to wrap up the Legendary Raid Weekends, from Friday, March 27, 2020 at 8 a.m., until Monday, March 30, 2020 at 10 p.m., Lugia will be returning to Five Star Raids. This dual type Flying and Psychic type Pokémon will know the exclusive move Aeroblast, and trainers will also have the chance to encounter a shiny Lugia.

Mysterious Weekend – A Drive to Investigate

The madness doesn’t just end with the raids, however, and starting March 20, 2020 at 8 a.m. until March 23, 2020 at 10 p.m., a “Mysterious Weekend” will take place, with a Special Research Story Event. This weekend will see Bug and Steel type Pokémon take over One through Four Star Raids. This event seems to set the stage for the introduction of the Generation 5 Mythical Pokémon, Genesect, a dual-type Bug and Steel Pokémon. This could likely be a paid event, similar to how Regigigas was introduced with the event, "A Colossal Discovery." This information has not been confirmed, and more details will follow, so we’ll have to just wait and see how the Research Story plays out. Also during this "Mysterious Weekend," fire-water-electric-and Ice type Pokémon will appear more frequently in the wild, along with Nincada returning to the wild and 5km eggs with the chance of a shiny encounter.

Abra Community Day?

The Psychic Spectacular

Although unconfirmed, Niantic released a cryptic tweet that seems to indicate Abra will be the next Community Day Pokémon. While the tweet didn’t specify any details, other than containing the purple background associated with Psychic type Pokémon, data miners found evidence in the game's code that seems to confirm Abra will indeed be the Community Day Pokémon scheduled for March 15, 2020. This has yet to be verified by Niantic, but all indications are pointing towards shiny Abra finally being released into the game, and the final evolution, Alakazam, getting a much-needed improvement with a Community Day exclusive move.

In addition, Pokémon GO will close out the month with "The Psychic Spectacular," from Friday, March 27 at 8 a.m. until Monday, March 30 at 10 p.m. This event will see the release of new Gen 5 Pokémon Solosis and Gothita. Solosis, the Cell Pokémon, will be in the wild during the daytime, while Gothita, the Fixation Pokémon will be available in the wild in the evening. Psychic type Pokémon will also be appearing in raids, and hatching from 2km eggs during this event.
