"Pokémon X and Y" Walkthrough: Route 9 and Glittering Caves

Wild Pokémon – Route 9

A Fossil Lab is great and all, but without a key researcher behind the desk it's not much good for anyone. Looks like you're off to the Glittering Caves to retrieve a wandering academic before he gets hopelessly lost—or caught by some of the local ne'er-do-wells . . .

Route 9

  • Go through the eastern gate in Ambrette Town. On the other side you'll find a Rhyhorn waiting to be ridden.
  • Ride it across the rough terrain. You'll run into Pokémon on the way, so be alert.
  • Bash through the rocks ahead, then walk off the beaten path and use the Rhyhorn to bash through the stone blocking off the X Defense.
  • The path ahead splits. Take a right and you'll find a Paralyze Heal. You can also edge around the side of the cliff to find a Fire Stone behind the rocks.
  • Continue along to the left and you'll eventually come across some people. Ignore them and keep bashing rocks to the north. You'll find a Dusk Ball and an opportunity to have a Sky Battle. You have to have a Flying-type Pokémon or one with Levitate, or you can't participate.

Sky Trainer Orion

Ledian, level 20

Reward: $2,100

Piece of cake. A Flying-type can, so long as it has an associated move, rip Ledian apart.

  • Backtrack to the people you saw previously and hop off of your Rhyhorn. The woman straight ahead will fully restore the health of your Pokémon. Check the rock up and to the right of her for a Super Repel.
  • The cave is next. Forward!

Wild Pokémon – Glittering Cave, Winding Caves

Glittering Cave

  • The cave can get real confusing, real quick, by virtue of the camera angles. Be mindful of your positioning. Mind, too, that wild Pokémon in here appear as black domes in your path, rather than merely popping up at random.
  • Walk straight ahead to a split in the path. To the right is a dead-end, so continue forward.
  • Keep walking to the next split. Take a left to find a Hard Stone and another dead end. Turn back and continue straight, into the depths of the cave.
  • Another split? Horrors. Take a right and you'll find your way to TM 65, Shadow Claw. Oooo.
  • Return to the path and keep going. Eventually, you'll wind up in an open area . . . and you'll meet the inevitable evil trainer. Team Flare!

Team Flare Grunt

Houndour, level 18

Zubat, level 18

Reward: $720

Scroll to Continue

Read More From Levelskip

Easy peasy. Houndour is a slight threat, but shouldn't be too strong compared to you. Zubat is just annoying.

  • Mind that from here on, shadows appearing on the floor mark the appearance poins of wild Pokémon. If you picked up Rock Smash in town you can also equip it on a Pokémon and use it to smash the light grey rocks in the tunnel. Sometimes you'll find items, sometimes Pokémon, sometimes nothing.
  • Head east, along the mine cart tracks. Oh no, more Team Flare.

Team Flare Grunt

Gulpin, level 18

Electrike, level 18

Reward: $720

Doesn't fare much better than her partner. Watch out for Static.

  • Head north. Time for a team battle with your neighbour.

Wild Pokémon – Glittering Cave, Mine

Wild Pokémon – Glittering Cave, Rock Smash

Team Flare Grunt and Team Flare Grunt

Scraggy, level 20

Croagunk, level 20

Slightly more dangerous, but not with a partner along. Flying-types fare very well here.

Reward: $1,600

  • Follow the path. You'll find an Escape Rope along the way, and at the end of it, the researcher you were looking for. He'll offer you one of two fossils: the Jaw Fossil or the Sail Fossil. The Jaw Fossil will bring back Tyrunt, a Rock- and Dragon-type Pokémon, while the Sail Fossil will revive Amaura, a Rock- and Ice-type Pokémon. You only get one, so choose wisely. (Jaw Fossil all the way.)
  • As many and numerous people have pointed out, this area is a great place to look for Old Ambers, Skull Fossils, Cover Fossils, Armor Fossils, and Plume Fossils by Rock Smashing the many small boulders in the final passage. You can also find Root Fossils and Claw Fossils in Pokémon X, and Dome Fossils and Helix Fossils in Pokémon Y. Smashing a few rocks is highly recommended, as you're about to revisit the Fossil Lab anyway. Thanks, commenters and emailers!
  • Either walk back to the entrance or use the Escape Rope you just found to zip there automatically.
  • Return to the Fossil Lab in Ambrette Town. Talk to the researcher behind the desk and he'll zap the Fossil he gave you back into a Pokémon. If you find any other Fossils on your travels (you will), you can similarly bring them here and exchange them for an ancient Pokémon made modern.
  • Speak to the supervisor on the right side of the lab to receive Aerodactylite. (Thanks to Candice and Nathan for pointing that last one out. Doi.)

Well, that was fun. And profitable! It's been a long time since you last visited a Pokémon Gym, though, so your next stop is in a town that will see you one step closer to the Pokémon Championship match!

Return Trip – Glittering Cave

  • Enter the cave between 8 and 9 p.m. after upgrading your Mega Ring. Take your first right to a dead end. Here you'll find Kangaskhanite.

Nathan on November 05, 2013:

Helix and Dome fossils are Y exclusive, Claw and Root are X exclusive.

Also, as far as the Zangoose thing goes. I thought my freshly caught Sandile the move Bulldoze. TM can be bought from the Pokemon center in south Lumiose. Since its an earth move, the sevipers are weak against it and die but Zangoose only lost just over half health for me. I hope that helps. I mentioned it a while back on the correct walkthrough.

Matt Bird (author) from Canada on November 02, 2013:

Don't know what to tell you on that, Chloe. I didn't try to go back before beating the caves, so I don't know if the Rhyhorn is refusing because you missed something. (Which I doubt.) You spoke to the researcher at the end of the caves?

Only three other possibilities I can think of:

- You got off your Rhyhorn in a bad spot, and it can't turn properly to let you back on. I think the Rhyhorn resets its position each time you come and go, but I'm not positive.

- You aren't approaching the Rhyhorn from the side. Can't get on it from the front. If you got to the caves already, though, I'm show you know how to hop on the thing.

- You're holding something while you try to get on the Rhyhorn. I can't remember if you have it by this point, but you can't be holding the Dowsing Machine or anything else while trying to mount the Rhyhorn.

Dunno if any of this helped, but I'm stumped.

Chloe on November 02, 2013:

my Ryhorn keeps shaking his head when I try to leave the caves. there's no way out. I'm so confused. I defeated everyone in the caves. I'm at route 9 now by the old guy and the nurse chick. helpppp. I've been stuck for days.

Joshua on October 26, 2013:

What level does hippopotas

Matt Bird (author) from Canada on October 25, 2013:

People have been telling me that Kangaskhan's in the caves for, like, two weeks, but I only JUST managed to find the stupid thing to verify as much. Good lord I had poor luck.

Steven Holt on October 25, 2013:

I found a Kangaskhan in Glittering Caves just now so that needs to be added to this guides list! I'm playing Pokemon Y if that helps!

Matt Bird (author) from Canada on October 23, 2013:

If Serebii's list is to be trusted, no, it's not. I got lucky and found a Mawile on my first trip through, but I've gone back a few times and haven't seen one since. Keep on pluggin' and you'll catch one eventually.

Carolina on October 23, 2013:

Is Mawile exclusive for Y or something? Cause I've been running around looking for more than an hour and sill havn't seem one. Yet I have seen around 10 Lunatones and Solrocks...

Tore on October 22, 2013:

Time doesn't change anything, I finally caught Lunablabla et Mawile... I saw Lunablabla during day and night so....

Sorry for the post about Seviper and Zangoose, I didn't noticed I was on the wrong page.... I don't have any pokemon with healing pulse and don't have the TM, if it exists...) so, I'll have to find another technique or find healing pulse I guess...

Dk on October 22, 2013:

Waaa. I already got 3 Claw Fossils . I really wan to have Plume Fossil and Helix Fossil.

Matt Bird (author) from Canada on October 21, 2013:

Ha ha, wish I could, but I'm not in charge of the programming on this site. Just a writer.

Matt Bird (author) from Canada on October 21, 2013:

I don't know if time makes a difference in the cave, to be honest. I'll have to test it some more.

Someone in the comments on another article mentioned using Heal Pulse to keep the Zangoose healthy while picking off the Sevipers one-by-one. Lucario knows Heal Pulse. I haven't tried this yet since I haven't run into that particular horde, but it sounds like a viable tactic.

Tore on October 21, 2013:

You should add an editing function for the comments...

Tore on October 21, 2013:

Sorry, I'm rench so I don't remember all the english names... ^^

Tore on October 21, 2013:

Makes sense coz I'm on Y version too and I couldn't get Claw and Root neither...

On another hand, I cannot find Lunatite and Mawile. Is there a specific time for getting them?

For Ryhorn, I found a lot when exploring the cave a night...

I'm still looking for Zangoose but they seem to only appear alone with horde of Seviper. Sevipers that kill him before I can kill them... Someone said that he saw a horde of Zangoose killing a Seviper. Is it a version specific encounter? If so, does anyone have a pro-tip to kill the Sevipers fast enough or to prevent them from killing the Zangoose before I kill'em all?

Matt Bird (author) from Canada on October 21, 2013:

Yeah, I hadn't tried the first time for some reason, but I found a TON of fossils while down there... just not the Claw or Root Fossils. I think they might be version-specific.

Still revamping this one. The way you find pokemon in the maze area makes grinding wilds take a while.

Tore on October 21, 2013:

I forgot to mention that it's on the bottom floor of the cave! I just come in, smash all the rocks, find some fossils or pokemons, get out of the bottom floor, get back in and do all of this again and again!

Tore on October 21, 2013:

After defeating the League Master (didn't try before), I found a lot of different fossils when smashing rocks!

Jacob on October 20, 2013:

Press a to smash them

greentail on October 20, 2013:

How do you get through the rocks on route nine im getting real pissed off

Shinjuki on October 20, 2013:

Running around in Glittering Cave like a moron trying to find a Mawile, oddly enough, I've seen gods of Lunatone and Solrock and... an Onix... but Mawile is yet to be seen.

David on October 18, 2013:

you can find helix, dome fossils if you use rock smash here

Nathan on October 18, 2013:

u can find hippopotas while riding rhyhorn

Matt Bird (author) from Canada on October 17, 2013:

I'll be back to this page soon, guys. Trying to get through the game before I drastically revamp the previous pages. I have added navigation, though, which will appear just above the comments. Totally my bad for not including it in the first place.

guy on October 17, 2013:

I found this page via Google...but now that I'm here I have no way to navigate to other pages/walkthroughs. All I see is a thousand ads

Dwebble is also in the cave ;)

Caleb on October 13, 2013:

Thanks for you guides! They are a great help! :)

nick on October 13, 2013:

anyone out there know what to do after u have defeated blaze in the cave... ive been stuck for a while and have no idea where to go

Nathan on October 13, 2013:

Old Amber is one of the many items you can get from rock smashing, so it could take awhile. Lol But there is a scientist in the right room of the fossil place that will give you Aerodactylite.

Matt Bird (author) from Canada on October 13, 2013:

Huh. Once I have Fly I'll have to go back there. Clearly it wasn't nearly as straightforward as I figured.

Nathan on October 13, 2013:

With how long I was at Glittering Caves, I did end up finding Old Amber and revived an Aerodactyl with it. 8D

Nite on October 13, 2013:

That is a bit of a bigger jump between gyms compared to previous versions.

Guess it sounds like it shouldn't take to long to get there. I hope lol. Its the way i enjoy playing pokemon the best is when I have access to Dusk balls lol.

Nathan on October 13, 2013:

Its hard to say for rarity. I was there for quite a while and only found 2 Kangaskhans and Cubones by the time I left but I found about a dozen Lunatones and one Solrock. And about 6 Mawiles. Sounds like it was different for you. Lol

Matt Bird (author) from Canada on October 13, 2013:

Cyllage is five or six towns from the start, yes. Though it's your second gym challenge... there's a huge jump between the first and second gyms in this one...

Nite on October 13, 2013:

Thanks for the quick reply Matt, i developed a finicky habit of trying to use Dusk Balls exclusively for the visual . which ends up giving me a bit more challenge since they arent usually sold early on so once i get to where I can buy them I tend to back track and actually start catching the pokemon i like most to train for real.

So I'm figuring Cyllage is a few towns away from the start?

Matt Bird (author) from Canada on October 13, 2013:

Hm. Maybe I should shift Cubone to Rare, though I swear I ran into two of 'em. I'll add Ferroseed as Uncommon, I guess, and the others... Uncommon for now, until I find out otherwise. Thanks, y'all.

Nathan on October 13, 2013:

Talk about good luck. The next one I found after that was Cubone. XD

Nathan on October 13, 2013:

Should probably point out that the Ferroseed I found was in the same way that the Woobats occur. Mawile and Solrock were the top floor shadowy things. Just need Cubone from here now...

Matt Bird (author) from Canada on October 13, 2013:

Nathan, no worries. I like people commenting - that way I have a better idea of what to find when I go back to those areas. Just letting ya know how I'm churning these suckers out.

Nite, you can buy Dusk Balls in Cyllage City. If you're in Ambrette Town right now, you'll be headed to Cyllage next.

Nite on October 13, 2013:

Have you by chance come across a town that sells the Dusk Ball yet? I'm trying to find out which town is the first we'll find that sells them.

Nathan on October 13, 2013:

I'm playing Y. And I do understand how you're doing it. I tend to look at things like this and try to make sure I get them all before I leave the area. I figured commenting with what I find might help out a bit. xD Sorry if it's a nuisance...

Matt Bird (author) from Canada on October 13, 2013:

Which version are you playing, Nathan? I've been writing these from Y.

I'm far from done with this article, or any of the others. I spend about twenty to thirty minutes just mucking about in each area, catching wilds, before I move on to the next. No doubt I've not covered all the bases. I'll come back and edit in more pokemon as additional information about version exclusives, night and day, that sorta thing, becomes available to me.

Nathan on October 13, 2013:

Aaaand now I've found Solrock. Yet to find Cubone or Woobat or Kangaskhan...

Nathan on October 13, 2013:

And now I just found a Mawile in Glittering Caves...o.o

Nathan on October 13, 2013:

Just found a Ferroseed in Glittering Cave...o.o

Nathan on October 13, 2013:

Found Helioptile on Rt 9. I read somewhere you can get a Rhyhorn too but I have yet to see one. :c

German on October 13, 2013:

KillerWarPiggy\ on October 13, 2013:

you can also find onix in the cave

Henry on October 13, 2013:

Can find kangaskan in glittering cave too

Candice on October 13, 2013:

Also, after Glittering Caves, go and visit the scientist to the north-east of the lab; he'll give you an Aerodacylite (necessary component of Aerodactyl's Mega Evolution) and tell you that you can find Old Ambers sometimes when you break a rock with Rock Smash.
