Skyrim Skill Training: How to Train Restoration

Some of the best restoration spells can even heal allies.

Restoration is one of the most important skills in the game. Regardless of how you play, you will want to conserve healing items, either because you'll want them in a pinch, or because they're often light and sell for quite a bit of gold. You will also save a lot of time healing from a hot-key spell rather than going into your inventory and finding an item.

Of course, restoration is one of the most difficult skills to level naturally! You'll definitely want to train restoration, even though this might also take some time. Luckily, you can train it in conjunction with block and light and heavy armor. Since those skills work with defense, increasing them simultaneously will lessen your need for a high restoration skill.

You may alternatively use a skill trainer to train restoration. i would suggest you use my method detailed here until you level your armor skill sufficiently, and thereafter level restoration with a trainer. You'll otherwise waste a lot of time and miss out on actually enjoying the game. Detailed information on how to do train with a restoration trainer will be included at the bottom of the article.

Regular skeletons and wolves are good alternatives to crabs.
Regular skeletons and wolves are good alternatives to crabs.

Step One: Train restoration with crabs!

Make sure to leave followers behind for this one! At lower levels, place a shield in one hand and a healing spell in the other or healing in both hands. Also, wear your armor of choice. Find some wolves, or other weaklings, and let them wail on you for a while, until you either need to fend them off or your skill increases so high that you feel comfortable moving on to stronger enemies. Make sure not to heal while at full health. This will only waste magic. Next find some normal bandits, crabs, or some other enemies that you can handle.

Step Two: Train restoration with giants!

Now that your defenses are up, you can move on to step two to increasing restoration. Keep moving up the line until you can take a hit from a giant and live. Giants deal a massive amount of damage for every blow. You should be able to increase restoration rather quickly. If you use enemies of lesser caliber, training restoration will take forever. Giants, on the other hand, will increase the skill every few hits.

In order to remain standing, make sure to run and heal every so often. Regardless of your armor skill, giants pack a punch. You do not want to put the controller down or take your eyes off the screen. Also, try and find a giant location that will not have any more enemies. One of these suckers is more than enough to worry about when training restoration.

Other restoration training advice

Consider enchanting equipment to make yourself sturdier or to increase healing ability. Even weak armor enchantments can have a significant impact on your ability to take damage. These enchantments will allow you to take more damage sooner, which will in turn allow you to train restoration faster.

How to train restoration with a trainer

I will now provide detailed information on how to locate trainers who will charge you to automatically level up a skill. Trainers can be used a maximum of five times per player level. This means that at any given level, you may only train any combination of skills five times. If you train restoration five times, you cannot train block until you level. I will not provide all trainers, but instead provide the most efficient and easily accessible trainers only.

For restoration in particular, I advise you to train until sufficiently sturdy, and only thereafter resort to using a trainer. Using a trainer is costly, so only waste the gold if you truly want to max out restoration. Otherwise use the aforementioned method.

Train restoration with Colette Marence up to Level 75

Colette can be found at the College of Winterhold. You must join the college before she will train you. This should be pretty easy.

Train restoration with Danica Pure-Spring up to Level 90

You will need to complete a quest before training with Danica, so consider waiting until you can fight strong enemies before seeking her out for training. On the other hand, she is easily found, so the sooner you can use her instead of Colette, the better. Use the following images to find Danica.

Conclusion on training restoration

If you discover other methods to train restoration, please feel free to comment below. I may have chosen to exclude certain tactics to train restoration (e.g. skill books), because those methods require a lot of research or are more convoluted than this simple tutorial. I may choose to update this article with more advise in the future. In the meantime, please consider following some of my other Skyrim tutorials!
