Final Fantasy 7

The most popular Final Fantasy game in North America, Final Fantasy 7 (FF7) brought our dreams into a whole new 3-D realm. Though lackluster compared to modern graphics, FF7's visuals were revolutionary for their time.

Besides the impressive aesthetics, FF7 introduced us to a bleak and futuristic, yet still whimsical world full of intriguing characters. Which ones reign supreme? Today, we'll countdown the six strongest non-deity warriors from all FF7 games—beware of spoilers throughout the series!

6. Genesis Rhapsodos

First seen in: Dirge of Cerberus

Summary: One of few First-Class SOLDIERs, Genesis serves as the main antagonist of Crisis Core. Infuriated by the decaying cells within his body, Genesis abandons SOLDIER and searches desperately for a cure—no matter the cost.

Though he plays a far bigger role in Crisis Core (and it comes chronologically earlier), we first glimpsed Genesis in the secret ending of Dirge of Cerberus.

  • Skilled Swordsman (holds his own against Sephiroth)
  • Proficient with Fire Magic (or materia, if you prefer)
  • Capable of Flight

5. Weiss

First seen in: Dirge of Cerberus

Summary: A mysterious warrior who commands the nefarious organization Deepground, Weiss is the strongest of its Tsviets (elite soldiers). He wields two katana that are capable of firing bullets, reminiscent of the gunblades from Final Fantasy 8.

  • Skilled swordsman (fought evenly against Chaos Vincent)
  • Invincible in your first fight against him
  • Can transform into a fearsome and enormous Omega form

4. Vincent Valentine

First seen in: FF7

Summary: A stoic man haunted by his dark past as a Turk, Vincent helps Cloud and company defend the planet from Sephiroth and Jenova. Later, Vincent stars in his own game, Dirge of Cerberus. Vincent is immortal in that he doesn't age, but his body can still be destroyed.

  • Skilled gunman
  • Agile combatant surprisingly capable in melee despite the absence of a sword
  • Capable of many transformation, particularly his Chaos form

Zack Fair

3. Zack Fair

First seen in: FF7

Summary: Like Vincent, Zack was first met in FF7, but later starred in the prequel Crisis Core. The apprentice of Angeal and a First Class SOLDIER, Zack defeats many powerful opponents despite his youth. He obtains his iconic Buster Sword from his mentor, and later passes it to his good friend Cloud.

  • Skilled swordsman
  • Proficient with various materia
  • Defeated Angeal, Genesis, and even the Goddess Minerva (if optional bosses can be counted)

2. Cloud Strife

First seen in: FF7

Summary: A warrior with clouded memories, Cloud learns the truth about his planet as he defends the Lifestream against the Shinra corporation and Sephiroth. Despite not actually being a SOLDIER, Cloud fights with the ferocity of one and develops several fearsome Limit Breaks.

  • Incredible swordsman
  • Proficient with materia
  • Fearsome Limit Breaks
  • Seems to be the only guy who even has a chance against Sephiroth

1. Sephiroth

First seen in: FF7

Summary: Formerly the strongest SOLDIER, Sephiroth loses his mind after learning the dark circumstances surrounding his birth. The main antagonist of the original game, Sephiroth usually manhandles anyone crazy enough to duel him. He also serves as an option superboss in the Kingdom Hearts series.

  • Insanely good with that 9-foot long sword
  • Invincible when briefly in your party during a flashback
  • Capable of flight and transformation
  • Defeated Zack, held the advantage against Genesis and Angeal (at the same time!) and outduels Cloud in the movie Advent Children (who only manages to win with a Limit Break)

Future of Final Fantasy 7

The FF7 story has yet to conclude. Dirge of Cerberus, the last chronological entry thus far, ends with a secret cliffhanger where Genesis states he still "has much work to do." Though Final Fantasy has its hands full with other projects, we can hope that eventually they'll revisit 7's world and wrap things up.

In the meantime, there's an upcoming FF7 remake for the PS4 to tide us over, as well as new Kingdom Hearts games that may incorporate 7's characters. But in the meantime, vote for your strongest fighter, and I'll see you at our next countdown!

Thanks, Alexis! As much as I love Vincent, I've gotta admit there are far better spin-offs to play than DoC (like FF 10-2 or the Dissidia titles).

Sadly I haven't played Dirge of Cerebus (unless watching a video of the cutscenes count), but definitely agree with your top 4!
