Beat the Luca Goers in the First Tournament

It's easy to win the Final Fantasy X Blitzball Tournament, and you don't have to cheat to beat the Luca Goers!

The key to winning is to have Jassu hug the wall and carry it forward to get the ball to your shooter, pull defenders away with passes so they come at you one at a time, and use a special Shot—it doesn't have to be Jecht Shot—to beat the goalie's defense.

See my diagram and/or the video demo below for how I get my shooter in the scoring position.

All screencaps are from Final Fantasy X.

Keys to the Game: Blitzball Strategy 101

Sound Advice From Cap'n Wakka

Wakka's blitzball strategy needs just a little refinement:

  • The instant you get the ball, hit "square" and pass it BACK to one of your defenders who's nowhere near any opponents. Jassu starts out more competent than Botta.
  • The first time you ever play Blitzball, click "triangle" and switch to manual "A" mode as soon as you get the ball to one of your rear defenders. This lets you steer the ball carrier. But do it AFTER you've passed the ball back (previous tip). Get the ball away from potential tackles first, THEN fiddle with controls.
  • Carry the ball along the wall. It pulls defenders out of position.
  • Pass up to Tidus or Wakka before Balgerda reaches Jassu, because she can beat him. Abus can't.
  • Your goal is to draw all the defenders except Balgerda away from Tidus/Wakka, because Balgerda's attack is just a little weaker than their endurance.

More Blitzball Tips

  • Unless you've got Tidus with Jecht Shot, pass the ball or break/dribble before you get two defenders on your ball carrier. Jecht Shot is the only thing that can bust through two defenders.
  • Use a TECH—Sphere Shot or Venom Shot—to boost your shooter's SH higher than the goalie's CA/BL. Sphere Shot takes less time than Jecht Shot, so you can get more opportunities to score with it in a limited time.
  • Play "Keep Away" by passing the ball to undefended teammates. Each completed pass gives the passer an experience point. It also keeps the Goers from getting the ball. You may want to play keep away through the first half, wait until the second half to start scoring. This is because you don't get a chance to activate TECHs until halftime.

My Blitzball Strategy

Holding the Lead

Stop the Goers from Scoring!

Keepa starts out as a lousy goalie, but there are three things that will save you:

  1. After the first goal, Graav (C) has a habit of going straight towards your goal and will be tackled by 2–3 defenders. He often loses the ball then. Quick, pass it back to Jassu!
  2. Play Keep Away. Once you have a one or 1–2 goal lead, keep passing the ball among Aurochs who don't have any defenders on them. Every completed pass is an experience point!
  3. If all else fails, cheat. I haven't tested this, but I hear there's a game glitch that the opponents won't go after the ball carrier if he swims right behind your goal cage.

After You Win

In the cutscene after the tournament, Wakka is holding the Crystal Cup. Many NPCs in Luca and on the Highroad congratulate you, including Luzzu and Gatta. After Operation Mi'ihen, they're talking about it all the way back to Besaid! The Goers and their fans complain or (a few) give you props.

Still lose eveytime. Went 5 for 5 losses and now regret spending an hour on blitzball. This minigame waters down final fastasy

Kuna on February 14, 2020:

Old article, but amazing and really helpful! I didn't want to lose to those jerks, even though I was at a huge disadvantage! Thanks a ton!

Zadion on April 13, 2015:

GREAT guide. It took me a bit of practice and unfortunately luck does come into play here when the Lucas have the ball, but this made it a ton easier. Thanks!

got won to goers 0-3 ^^

auronlu (author) from Spira on April 26, 2013:

@anonymous: There is no way to ensure that the random kickoff always goes to the Aurochs -- that would be like ensuring that a coinflip always landed on the same side; it just doesn't work like that. However, even if the Goers get the ball and score first, this guide gives you a significant strategic advantage, so that you will score every time your side gets the ball whereas they will not.

This guide does solve the second problem you mentioned. As it says above: " CLICK TRIANGLE and switch to MANUAL A mode as soon as you get the ball to one of your rear defenders." The second half of this instruction is very important, so let me rephrase it for you: "Get the ball to one of your rear defenders, then click triangle." In other words, when your center first gets the ball right after the kickoff, do NOT click triangle -- pass the ball back!

For several seconds after kickoff, your rear defenders will not yet have any Goers near them, so passing the ball to them gives you time to activate manual steering before you have to worry about the Goers' forwards. If you're having problems with timing, punch square immediately after that and pass the ball to your opposite rear defender, who should still not have Goers near him.

Sadly this page whilst more detailed than many other guides has the same FAIL. It doesn't say how to get the ball of the goers. So basically the game starts, a goer catches the ball, they then proceed to score so 1-0 down before I even touch the ball, the guide doesn't address this. Second I can't pass right away when I get the ball, the game seems to want a 2-3 sec delay before the menu will come up, often I am caught before then and forced to try a break or pass through blocker. and of course the goers had the ball more than once, every time they had it they scored. This guide only tells you what to do whilst you have the ball but not whilst the goers have the ball. I certianly never had 3 defenders managing to gang up on their shooter. In fact he usually had only the keeper to beat, I had one defender reach him if lucky.

My First playstation 2 broke because of playing too much blitzball.

@anonymous: Gracious, I didn't realize that a simple help page could generate such a storm of controversy. I confess my memory is a little fuzzy, having created this tutorial about five years ago. Well, if it'll make you feel better, I'll edit it.

anonymous on November 12, 2012:

@auronlu: What? The +1, +2, and +3 spheres are IN GRID, never become an independent item at any point. The sphere as an item ALWAYS gives +4 stat. That's why the game call is "Strength Sphere", not a "+1, +2, +3, or +4 Strength Sphere". So, you should've just said "Strength Sphere". Right, everyone?

auronlu (author) from Spira on October 21, 2012:

@anonymous: Actually, I think there are stat spheres that give +1, +2, and +3 throughout the game. They drove me nuts.

Don't you remember that in the Monster Arena, one gets access to a Clear Sphere which lets you clear out all the +1, +2, and +3 spheres so you can laboriously replace them with +4 spheres to max out your stats?

If I had meant the prize was four spheres, I would have used the plural. I'm a bit persnickety about grammar, although I'm certainly not immune to typos.

anonymous on October 20, 2012:

@auronlu: ...that's confusing, then. As we both know, a stat sphere when applied grants +4. There are no stat spheres that apply +1, +2 or +3. This makes +4 redundant--unless you're being fancy about saying we get multiple spheres.

auronlu (author) from Spira on October 10, 2012:

@anonymous: I didn't say the prize was four strength spheres. i said it was a single +4 Strength Sphere. :)

(Stat-boosting spots on the sphere grid can be anywhere between +1 and +4.)

anonymous on October 08, 2012:

We win four strength spheres? Anytime I've done it, I've only won one.

anonymous on May 06, 2012:

OMG i've won the tournament before but this made it so much easier!!! thanks sooo much!! oh and the cheat works great too, after your ahead in scores of the goers, just swim into your goal and stay their until time runs out, the goers wont bother to come to you.

"I see your Blitz is larger than my Blitz!"

I just about laughed my face off at seeing that image. Thought I should let you know.

auronlu (author) from Spira on April 03, 2012:

@VeggieGamer: Woot! Congratulations! After the Best FMV Ever (Auron) and the painful laughing scene, go to dock 3 or wherever the Goers are hanging out and rub it in their faces! :D

I've been playing this game for almost 10 years and never beat them until now! I just won 1-2 in double overtime. Very intense game. Thanks for the tips!

@anonymous: Just saying, i have a VERY large backyard where i have, guess what? A BLITZBALL SPHERE POOL!! I advise anyone who wants one really badly to invest in Google stocks, rack in about $100,000, and buy one from the internet! (try to get a life-size one that actually pumps water into it.)

anonymous on December 21, 2011:

Thanks, took me a couple tries because I've never won and decided I would this time beating the game. Won 6-1 :)

@anonymous: Hooray! It feels good, doesn't it? Stupid Goers!
