In Skyrim, the Alftand Animonculory is a treacherous part of the path to find Blackreach, where the Elder Scroll can be found. The Alftand Animonculory is littered with dangerous Falmer (feral elves), dwemer or dwarven mechanical monsters and traps. This will guide the hero in navigating the Alftand Animonculory and various tactics to defeat the monsters in the Alftand Animonculory will be provided.
Get Down the Alftand Animonculory
In Skyrim, navigating the Alftand Animonculory means finding a way to get down the levels to the very bottom of the Alftand Animonculory, and then activating the levers and the dwarven mechanisms to unlock the gate to Blackreach.
From the Alftand Glacial Ruins, go through some corridors, dwarven spider workers, a dwarven shield and a stairway with some spinning blades (can do lots of damage). The hero has to dodge to the spinning blades or be cut down. From this stairway, there is a lever just beyond a gate which the hero can reach out to activate. Beyond this gate is a spiraling ramp that will lead the hero down the Alftand Animonculory.
The problem is that the path down the Alftand Animonculory is broken. At one point, it looks like the hero cannot get down any further. It is worthwhile to looking for this structure (see picture) at this crucial moment. Now aim for the ramp below and jump down. And the hero can continue further down the Alftand Animonculory.
Defeating the Falmer in the Alftand Animonculory
In Skyrim, the hero has to transverse the ramp in a clockwise direction, and encounters the first Falmer. These Falmer are vicious, dangerous and tenacious creatures which can melee as well as the player character, score critical and power hits with melee weapons and bows and block with shields. To defeat the Falmer in the Alftand Animonculory, the following tactics are suggested:
- Try to engage the Falmer one at a time, including luring them out around corners and focusing on one Falmer at a time.
- If the Falmer attack in twos or threes, get the follower to tank (but be careful, as the follower can be incapacitated and not be useful anymore) and just attack with the most powerful spells and melee attacks and defeat the Falmer as fast as possible.
- The Falmer is blind or almost blind but can pick up noises very well. it is possible to sneak attack the Falmer. Use the Illusion spell Muffle and then sneak up behind the Falmer to sneak attack and reduce it's health. Follow this up with the most powerful Shout at this stage (likely to be the Shout Fire, Fire Breath), and then hack the Falmer to pieces with melee weapons. The Falmer will be defeated.
- The hero can also lure the Falmer to the traps in the Alftand Animonculory, for example, the flame jets, and attack the Falmer here. This is very good for finishing off Falmers in groups. Watch as they stand before the flames and wilt away from the flames from the traps.

The key in this part of the Alftand Animonculory dungeon is to defeat the Falmer which appear from the Falmer tents in groups and then go out through a door to reach the lower parts of the ramp to continue the journey to the bottom of the Alftand Animonculory.
Bottom of Alftand Animonculory and Reaching Alftand Cathedral
In Skyrim, the end of the Alftand Animonculory is marked by reaching the bottom of the spiraling ramp. At the bottom of the Alftand Animonculory, the hero will transverse a corridor to a door that leads to Alftand Cathedral.
Beyond this door inside the Alftand Cathedral is a falmer. Defeat this falmer and open another door that leads outside the Alftand Cathedral. Directly ahead is an iron gate that blocks the way to the end of the Alftand Animonculory dungeon crawl. The hero has to defeat some Falmers and frostbite spider here and then go up the stairs on the left (of the iron gate and before the iron gate) to locate a lever to activate and open the iron gate.
Past the iron gate, the hero encounters a dwarven centurion. The dwarven centurion appears to be quite resistant to sword attacks. But it is quite vulnerable to fire. If the hero is having trouble trying to defeat the dwarven centurion, use the Shout Fire, Fire Breath on the dwarven centurion, and then run away. Allow the shout meter to replenish and return to launch another Fire Breath Shout on the centurion. Loot the elevator shaft key from the centurion once it is defeated.
Once the dwarven centurion is defeated, head up the stairs, and unlock another gate, Here, witness a fight between Umana and Sulla Trebatius. Watch Umana defeat Sulla Trebatius and then move in to defeat Umana. Pick up the cool shield from her and the cool sword from Sulla Trebatius and then activate the dwarven mechanism and descend the stairs to reach the entrance to Blackreach. The Elder Scroll is almost within reach.
Return to the Alftand Glacial Ruins and the Surface
In Skyrim, within the Alftand Animonculory and Alftand Cathedral area, there are two exits who will allow the hero to re-enter the Alftand Glacial Ruins and the Surface and rest. The first exit back from the Alftand Animonculory to the Alftand Glacial Ruins is located near the nest of Falmers infesting the passageways between the mid levels and the lower levels of the spiraling ramp. Look for a lever within an iron gate and activate this to use an elevator to return to Alftand Glacial Ruins. This will allow the hero to rest if the battles here get too intense.
Outside the Alftand Cathedral area, the second exit lies beyond the iron gate and the dwarven mechanism that leads to Blackreach. Again activate the lever to activate the elevator. The hero will need the elevator key from the dwarvern centurion to enter this area. The elevator will bring the hero back to the surface of Skyrim just outside the entrance to the Alftand Glacial Ruins. The hero can now fast travel to the towns and forts of Skyrim, rest and sell those treasures picked up in the Alftand Animonculory area before returning to this point. Take the elevator down, activate the dwarven mechanism and get ready to enter Blackreach.
