Hatoful Boyfriend may have started as an April Fools joke, but it's got a lot of heart and surprising depth, as well as some surprising secrets...

Hatoful Boyfriend, the world's first and only pigeon dating simulator, has many attractive bird boys, as well as one attractive bird girl, for you to date. In a postapocalyptic world where an avian flu made birds sentient and most humans have mysteriously vanished, you, one of the last remaining humans, are sent to a bird school to mingle with the best and brightest of Earth's new dominant species. Will you find interspecies love here, or will your efforts to woo your chosen one be dashed by your differences? (To get the bad ending, make your choices so that you don't pursue any bird specifically.) This guide will help you find the best tweetheart and pick the right choices to gain their affection. Try completing all of the routes, and you'll unlock a very interesting special route, fulfilling a promise you made when you were young... Let's get started with your suitors!

Ryouta Kawara

Your sweet, frail childhood friend.

Your sweet, frail childhood friend.

For those who'd enjoy a sweet romance between childhood friends, Ryouta is a great choice. He's a rock dove who's been in your life as long as you can remember, and he's a little mischievous sometimes, but he's responsible and kind. His mother is sick, and he works several jobs to pay for her medicine, but he doesn't mind it. Ryouta himself is rather sickly, so he goes to Dr. Iwamine for treatment often, even though he doesn't trust him. With the other birds, he tends to be the mediator and peacemaker, and is a stronger leader than he believes himself to be. As for hobbies, Ryouta enjoys cooking and wants to learn how to swim. Above all, Ryouta is loyal and utterly devoted to you, whether as your friend or as your boyfriend.

Here's how to win over Ryouta (you can pick any class for this route):

  1. On 4/11, join any club you want.
  2. On 4/21, choose to talk to Ryouta.
  3. On 5/21, participate in the 3-legged race.
  4. On 6/22, go to the cafeteria.
  5. On 6/22, choose "Leave it to me!"
  6. On 7/07, wish to conquer the world by force.
  7. Also on 7/07, tell Kazuaki "No thank you."
  8. On 7/13, go yell at Dr. Iwamine.
  9. On 7/24, go find a job.
  10. On 7/25, give the job to Ryouta.
  11. On 8/06, choose to invite Ryouta to the summer festival.
  12. On 8/30, return to your glorious abode.
  13. On 9/13, tell Ryouta you would love to walk home with him.
  14. On 10/19, choose “I'll ask for you when I go there.”
  15. On 2/02, give Ryouta the calm corn.

Once you finish Ryouta's route, you'll get ending No. 1: "While it lasts."

Sakuya Le Bel Shirogane

The haughty rich boy and strict student council president.

The haughty rich boy and strict student council president.

Sakuya is a half-French, half-Japanese fantail pigeon, and he's descended from nobility on both sides of his family, a fact that he makes you aware of as soon as you meet him. He comes off as arrogant and snobbish at first, but there is quite a bit more to Sakuya than you see initially. He's a talented musician and secretly wants to pursue it as a career rather than follow in his father's footsteps. He's also quite intelligent and takes his academics and extracurriculars seriously. As the student council president he is strict but fair, and truly wants to create a better society for his fellow students. Sakuya also has a bit of a fear of ghosts, and a rather nerdy fascination with Japan's ninjas and samurais. This noble jewel has many facets, and he is a treasure worth pursuing.

Sakuya has two different endings that differ depending on what you choose to study. Pick random classes to get his normal ending, or stick with music every time it's offered to raise your charisma to its maximum level so you can get Sakuya's true ending. Here's how to seduce Sakuya:

  1. On 4/11, join the student council.
  2. On 4/15, become the vice president of the student council.
  3. On 4/21, talk to Sakuya.
  4. On 5/21, join the cheerleaders.
  5. On 6/12, side with Sakuya.
  6. On 6/22, go to the store.
  7. Also on 6/22, choose "I think that's a little rude!"
  8. On 7/07, wish to become a famous artist.
  9. Also on 7/07, tell Kazuaki "No thank you."
  10. On 7/11, choose "Probably Sakuya".
  11. On 7/20, tell Sakuya "You help too!"
  12. On 7/24, choose "Forget it."
  13. On 8/06, invite Sakuya to the summer festival.
  14. On 8/30, return to your glorious abode.
  15. On 9/25, invite Sakuya to the haunted house.

Sakuya's route can have two possible endings: the normal ending is ending no. 2: "Into the Night", and the true ending is ending no. 3: "Song of the Foolish Bird".

The quiet, mysterious boy who's always hiding in the library.

Nageki, a freshman mourning dove, is quiet and withdrawn, with an aura of mystery around him that intrigues you. He's a huge bookworm that never seems to leave the library, and he seems to dislike the outdoors. Nageki is polite, but slow to open up. Dr. Iwamine has a bad reputation among the students for being unsettling, but if you like bad boys you'll enjoy your time with him...

For those who love bad boys, mad scientists, and mad declarations of love, you're going to enjoy this one. Shuu, a chukar partridge, is the sadistic school doctor, with a sinister reputation among the students. Rumors of experimentation and student disappearances float around the school, but those are probably just hearsay, right? He's dangerously intelligent and has a very dark, deadpan sense of humor, so much so that you have to wonder if he's joking or not... His first love is science, but his second mad, obsessive, jealous love could be you. You'll never hear "Dance of the Sugarplum Fairies" the same way again after this route.
