This thing? This thing right here? This is writing, and it’s an example of what you want your sim to do. The Writer career will put your sim in a long, involved romance with the written word, one that’ll keep them up late at night, glaring impotently at their computer monitors and pounding out long descriptions that serve, primarily, as sources of valuable keystrokes.

(See what I did there?)

The Writer career in The Sims 4 is custom-made for one Aspiration, namely Creativity - Bestselling Author. Muser will help build your sim’s skills more speedily. Traits best chosen for Writers include Creative, Bookworm, Perfectionist, and, for Journalists primarily, Outgoing. Loner isn’t a bad choice if your focus is on writing books over relationships, though it’s a poor choice indeed for Journalists.

Below is a list of tiers available to sims who become Writers. Note that no single sim can see all of these tiers. You’ll need two different sims to explore Writer’s two branches.

Writer

  • Ideal Mood: Inspired
  • Daily Tasks: Read Books (Writer); Write Books (Author); Write Articles (Journalist)

Level 1 - Writer’s Assistant

  • Wage: $25 / hour
  • Time: 11:00 am - 7:00 pm
  • Days: Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Friday
  • Bonus: None

Welcome to the bottom rung. For your first level of promotion your sim needs to Practice Writing for three hours. You can do this on a computer.

Level 2 - Blogger

  • Wage: $32 / hour
  • Time: 11:00 am - 7:00 am
  • Days: Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Friday
  • Bonus: $407, Milton Word Processor

Movin’ on up. To reach the next career level your sim must get to level two of the Writing skill. You must also make them Write a Book. Both can be accomplished via a computer.

Level 3 - Freelance Article Writer

  • Wage: $38 / hour
  • Time: 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
  • Days: Sunday - Tuesday, Thursday
  • Bonus: $509, Still Life with Apple and Pitcher and Books and Bottles and Flowers, Pitch Story idea interaction

Gettin’ big. Your sim must reach level three in Writing and Self-Publish two books. After writing a book, click on the mailbox outside your house to mail them off for publication.

Level 4 - Advice Columnist

  • Wage: $44 / hour
  • Time: 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
  • Days: Sunday - Tuesday, Thursday
  • Bonus: $611, The Thinker

Let people know what you think. To reach your next promotion you’ll have to raise Writing to level four and write three books. Pretty easy.

Level 5 - Regular Contributor

  • Wage: $50 / hour
  • Time: 8:00 am - 4:00 pm
  • Days: Monday - Wednesday, Friday
  • Bonus: $703, An Open Book, Framed, new CAS parts

You’re a staple at the newspaper now. To reach the next level in line your sim needs to reach level five in Writing and Self-Publish four books.

Once your sim hits level six they’ll split, leading you in one of two possible directions.

Level 6 - Short Story Writer

  • Wage: $60 / hour
  • Time: 1:00 pm - 9:00 pm
  • Days: Sunday, Wednesday - Saturday
  • Bonus: $956, Antique Tomes

Keep it short. To reach the next level on this branch your sim needs to reach level seven of Writing, as well as earn $500 from published book, regardless of how they’re published. Move away from Self-Publishing to speed this process up a bit (and to create a nice source of passive income each day).

Level 7 - Novelist

  • Wage: $115 / hour
  • Time: 1:00 pm - 8:00 pm
  • Days: Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday
  • Bonus: $1,243

Or long, perhaps? To jump past Novelist your sim will have to reach level eight on Writing and write five books. You probably have the second have of this nailed done if you’ve been Self-Publishing or just plain Publishing on a regular basis.

Level 8 - Fan Favorite

  • Wage: $202 / hour
  • Time: 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm
  • Days: Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday
  • Bonus: $1,808, Non de Plume Quill Pen

They love you! To leap beyond regular fame your sim needs to reach level nine on the Writing skill and earn $2,500 publishing books, regardless of your method of publishing. This will probably take a while, but it’s quite straightforward.

Level 9 - Bestselling Author

  • Wage: $296 / hour
  • Time: 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm
  • Days: Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday
  • Bonus: $2,421, The Muse

Almost at the top of the world. Your sim must complete the final leg of their Writing career by maxing out Writing at level ten and submitting two books to Literary Digests. There’s a cool down time on this, but it’s no different than normal publishing methods.

Level 10 - Creator of Worlds

  • Wage: $465 / hour
  • Time: 12:00 pm - 6:00 pm
  • Days: Tuesday, Saturday
  • Bonus: $2,885, Door of Perception

Level 6 - Page Two Journalist

  • Wage: $56 / hour
  • Time: 8:00 am - 4:00 pm
  • Days: Monday - Friday
  • Bonus: $956

Welcome to a big time newspaper. To reach the next level in this branch your sim must raise their Writing skill to level seven and Charisma to level two. Charisma can easily be raised by Practicing Speech in a mirror. Your sim must also Write three Articles, available by clicking on a sim, using the Interview about Life Friendly conversation option, and then selecting Write Article on a computer.

Level 7 - Front Page Writer

  • Wage: $83 / hour
  • Time: 8:00 am - 3:00 pm
  • Days: Monday - Friday
  • Bonus: $1,562, Antique Writer’s Desk

You’re the star of the journalism world. To reach the next level your sim must raise Writing to eight and Charisma to three, as well as Write five Articles.

Level 8 - Investigative Journalist

  • Wage: $145 / hour
  • Time: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
  • Days: Monday - Thursday
  • Bonus: $2,031, There Where Should I Go? Ball

No one can hide from your mighty pen. To rise above Investigative Journalist your sim must reach level nine in Writing and level four in Charisma, as well as earn $3,000 from your Articles.

Level 9 - Editor-in-Chief

  • Wage: $189 / hour
  • Time: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
  • Days: Monday - Thursday
  • Bonus: $2,844, Antique Typewriter

You’re the boss! To reach the final tier of your Journalist career you must raise Writing to level ten and Charisma to level five. Continuing with past trends, your sim must also raise $5,000 from their Articles. Simple enough.

Level 10 - Scribe of History

  • Wage: $287 / hour
  • Time: 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
  • Days: Monday - Thursday
  • Bonus: $3,697, Deep Thoughts Bookcase
