How Do People Cheat on "World Golf Tour"?

I'm an avid outdoorsman who also enjoys playing video games from time to time.

Here, we are going to look at ways of cheating on WGT. This article is not intended to encourage people to find cheats for World Golf Tour or cheat in any way. It’s just a look at some of the methods people use to cheat.

WGT markets itself as the most realistic online golf game and it surely is. But over the years, there have been various forms of cheating allegations made that range from basic sandbagging to people using specially-designed software.

WGT uses state-of-the-art technology to give people a realistic golfing experience. However, as with most online games, there are always people trying to find a way to beat the system.

You can win some excellent prizes on World Golf Tour so people are sometimes looking for that little bit of help or how to get free credits. So how exactly do people cheat on WGT? Well, let’s have a look at some of the most common ways.

"WGT" is a realistic game.

"WGT" is a realistic game.

WGT Sandbagging

This is one of the biggest problems that World Golf Tour has faced over the years. When you play, you’re assigned a tier based on your skill level. So a beginner starts at Hack level. Then you progress on to Amateur, then Pro, then after a few more tiers you finally reach Legend status.

There are certain tournaments that you can enter based on your tier, which means that you play people of a similar skill level. This helps to level the playing field a bit. Another issue with the tiers is that the better your tier, the harder the game. Legend players have to play from the very back tees and often find the hole around is around 100 yds longer than if they were playing at the Hack level. To counter this, some people employ sandbagging.

Sandbagging on WGT is basically manipulating your average score to prevent you from moving up a tier. So you might hit 5 rounds with a score of 70, then you throw in a round of 100 to mess up your average.

This will keep you playing at a lower tier and give you a better chance of winning tournaments. So what has WGT done to counter sandbagging? Well, there are various measures put in place to prevent sandbagging. Instead of counting every score towards your average, World Golf Tour only counts the 10 best scores of your previous 15 rounds. If you are shooting scores that are too good for your tier, someone will notice and get in contact with you. They also closely examine your score history.

Another way that WGT prevents sandbagging is by making everyone's round scores public so anyone can check anyone else’s scores. If a Hack is playing some amazing rounds, people can easily check up on their score history and find out if cheating is involved.

Although WGT has put measures in place to prevent sandbagging, it still goes on to some extent. The fact is, though, that sooner or later all sandbaggers get found out, and their cheating is short-lived.

Multiple Accounts

This is another major problem facing the World Golf Tour community. The rules state that you are allowed one account per person. This is pretty simple. However, people often break this rule to their own advantage. If you have been playing for a while and have advanced through the tiers to Legend status, you are no doubt a very good player.

So what some people do is then create another account. Now they start out again at Hack level but already have the ability to shoot some low scores and thus win competitions they should not be entering in the first place.

If there is any suspicious activity in this regard, WGT is often very quick to act. If someone spots what they think is a multi-account user, they often bring it to the attention of a WGT member of staff.

Game administrators can then check things like IP address to see if there are any discrepancies. If a user uses a different computer for each account, then there is no way of knowing if they're cheating.

However, WGT is a very hard game to learn. No one can just join up and then shoot sub-par rounds straight away. So if a Hack is shooting very low scores, chances are their account will soon be shut down. This is just another form of cheating that WGT will not tolerate.

Cheating Software

Over the years, there have been claims that people have been using software to cheat on WGT. However the fact is that even if you do have some kind of software, it is impossible to cheat properly. There are too many variables involved in the game to come up with a way of beating the system.

Some people claim to have used a programme that slows the meter right down. Even if this was the case, hitting the ‘ding’ on every shot would not guarantee a good score. Other software can select the correct club and work out the distances for you, but again you need some skill and ability to know where to aim your shot.

Chances are some people have come up with cheats for WGT. There are even things online that say you can download certain tools to help you cheat. But realistically the only way you are going to score well on World Golf Tour is if you practice.

When you see the scores some players hit, you assume they must be cheating. However, when you play for long enough you realise that shooting such low scores is very possible. Although cheating does sometimes happen on World Golf Tour, it does not affect the game in a big way. WGT is always working to eliminate cheaters and they work very hard to make sure the game is fair and just.

There are actually a few new tools on the game itself that can help improve your scores. There is a putting meter you can purchase which helps you judge the length of your putts. Some of the balls you can buy actually slow down the meter and make it easier to hit the all-important ding.

With the recent introduction of different lies which affect where your ball goes, the game is getting much harder and so there's a chance that more and more people will be looking for ways to game the system and cheat.

If you have never played World Golf Tour then you really are missing out. It is such a realistic golf game and it’s free to play. So forget all this talk of how people cheat and just go and enjoy a round of WGT.

Played in an 18 Tournament around Royal St George, shooting 64 and thinking I did good! But was 17 shots behind the leader! He shot 47! How is this possible??

WGT claims to be a realistic representation of proper golf but I can't remember ever seeing someone shoot less than 58 in real life!

Lizard1951 on June 12, 2020:

I putt out everything. The way that players use gimme's is pathetic. WGT and others call this game realistic. So, in a proper game of golf the player who is putting decides whether his putt is a gimme eh? The gimme's in WGT are all taken but the player putting, whereas they should be given, or not, by the opponent. The clue is in the name GIMME. It's not a TAKEME.

Dante on May 19, 2020:

I had about three years away from WGT and looking at the scores I've seen Hack level players with low 50's scores!! But that doesn't compare to the cost of golf balls which are the same as real golf balls and last half as long.

I entered a tournament with high winds and severe undulations on the greens. people were shooting 24 strokes under par...seems I'm[possible to me...I had a great round with -9 finishing 862 in 6the standings...NO FUN ANYMORE :(

YankeeAirPirate on April 13, 2020:

If the USGA recognizes and accommodates different skill levels, age levels and even genders (Black, Blue, White, Gold and Red tee boxes), then why would a swing meter tool like the former ShotMaster be considered a "cheat?"

At age 75, I find myself up against teenage lightening fast reflexes and eyesight for hitting the ding, or purposefully fore or aft of it. I don't consider it a "cheat" when I hit from the Gold tees IRL, I consider it a sensible and accommodating equalizer, at least to some acceptable degree. That's golf.

Kidmango41 on April 12, 2020:

Does anyone know why I have no option to play Challenges? When I go to game mode it goes from "practice" to "scored" but there is not the third option for challenge. It is not the state I am from as local friends of mine play challenges all the time. Any help would be most appreciated.

Was away from wgt for a while and being homebound decided to start again.

The first tournament I entered had a leading score of 52. That is for 18 holes. Less than 3 strokes per hole. That has to call for a perfect shot on each and every swing. Impossible without some other worldly help.

I'll be looking for something else to do.

Why am I being forfeited so much?

you sound like a salesman for wgt

Is it possible to preset wind speed and direction in practice mode?

Listen up people....cheating and sandbagging...can happen in ANY sport...ANY. Do your best...and quit your’s just a game at the end of the day

Rich Clanton on October 18, 2019:

I know there are a number of cheaters om WGT acting like they are beginners but are Masters or ?. I also have a complaint that my screen has been blocked for 3 days with a big box that says TOTAL XP+1 and I cant get rid of it, please fix.

WGT Hater on October 13, 2019:

WGT are just money grabbers who don’t care about players enjoyment or if people cheat. The servers are so inconsistent it is untrue and if you dare to question WGT you are brushed off with them stating that it is your broadband’s fault.

Their administration and algorithms are completely rubbish.

Callawaymaster on August 29, 2019:

How do you get unlimited coins?

Gary Laderoute on May 31, 2019:

What he said always the same people shoot mid 50's impossible is correct... than this means there is cheating going on... no one can do it... the pros do not do it on any shape or form... so this also means it is cheat to allow this to happen... and the biggest suck in is game is meter you have paid for the meter to be slow and it bounces all over... and ti is from 8 years playing this game and comments from all the players I have played... all... all.. every last one?????... second it the money they charge you for balls... then then you get stuck playing on 12 and 13 greens where it is not even likely able to know the green speed is constant the run is never the same from putt to putt... then when you can make something happen the wind always sem to blow against you????no cheats??? bull;... not cheat when yo ustart a game the wind is coming in one direction then restart and the wind will blow in another??? no cheats … bull... the money the make is astronomical... correct the issue they should... is you buy the clubs to maintain a 4 speed on the meter the is should be so always... absolutely... you have paid your dues... but not going to happen... the say you're computer... you're flash... wgt has the power to make it the same for all... make it own flash player for the game and keep the speed constant... but then why … it is all about the dollars and cents.... that is why... it is easier to blame all else around you're game then fix up the mess you have... create the fair game for all...

jobies on May 29, 2019:

you say that this game is realistic, but how can the same people like magnets for example shoot 52 every round, that in my opinion is NOT realistic

DuFussMcGoo on April 19, 2019:

I find it funny that people call others cheaters if they have bought some software that slows down the meter, yet WGT offers a player just that feature for 37 WGT credits (a shot). Your thoughts?

IlDioCane on April 02, 2019:

"state-of-the-art technology"... please no.

El Tuco on February 23, 2019:

I'm a geriatric (74) who loves the game for the wise and clear thinking plus good decisioon-making it demands, and the overall genteel behavior such a noble game seems to engender. But what I'm no longer in possession of are the lightening reflexes of the typical teenager and young adult.

Should I be penalized by a golf-like game that, so vastly unlike real golf, keys so vitally on mouse click reflexes, or just meekly accept my role as a prey species in open "challenge" and fee-based (Ready Go, Bracket, etc.) type games?

I'm confident that I can still out-think my way around a WGT golf course against my share of competitors, but gameplay on WGT is just SO dependent on those lightening reflexes that it really skews the game more in favor of the young MUCH more than the IRL game of golf.

I believe it may no longer exist, but at one time a third party offered a "tool" called Shot Master. Once correctly set up in your WGT account, it would help players of diminished physical abilities (such as reaction time) such as me "ding" the shots on a pretty dependable basis. Of course, there are many times when hitting the ding isn't what's needed to counter a severe crosswind, so it wasn't a slam-dunk cheater that would assure a win against a "bare-handed" opponent.

I'd like to see a tool like Shot Master brought back as I bellieve Ben Hogan was right on the money when he said that "Golf is a game that is played on a 6-inch course.... the distance between your two ears." [paraphrased -- I think that was Ben, wasn't it?].

Either that, or that WGT would accommodate senior citizens by creating a Senior League so we olphardts could at least know that we're up against a fellow dinged-up and "rode hard and put away wet" golfer. 'Course, there'd be cheaters who'd prey on that league as well, but I for one would certainly appreciate the accommodation by WGT to consider creating such a bracket.

Beyond that, does anybody know of an alternative to the apparently now defunct Shot Master tool? I'd really consider such a tool a fair game-leveling feaure more than a cheat, especially now that the rough-and-tumble of age has cheated me out of those prime stud lightening reflexes.

DS on February 21, 2019:

Players don’t have to cheat playing WGT golf because the app does that all by itself! How do players who win a few more coins than posted seem to pull off miraculous shots and recovery or how does a shot you’ve consistently played (I.e., same parameters - coarse, hole, windage, elevation, etc.) from the ‘fairway’ suddenly go 10-20 yards shorter or longer at a key point in the match x even when hitting the ‘kong’? WGT consistently responds that there are more parameters that affect the outcome of a shot - fantastic WGT, then provide them in the game! WGT may look the best but the playability is a function of who the app has selected to win!

Roshani Tripathi from New Delhi on August 01, 2018:
