Chaos Battle Cruisers

The Battle Cruisers of the Chaos fleets take a page from the Imperial versions, basically offering a smaller selection of slightly more powerful ships with a few extra offensive weapons. For the Chaos, they have a clear specialization in each of their three Battle Cruisers, the Acheron being the lance boat, Hades being your Macro spamming vessel and the Styx being a heavy combat carrier, with 4 launch bays, something very uncommon this low in the weight classes.

For these extra upgrades, you are paying a slight increase in points over your regular cruisers, so the Battle Cruisers can't fill out your numbers as well, but a few of them in the right places can really increase the punch of your fleet.

One final bonus which is really nice for the Chaos ships, is they still have good secondary weapon systems to complement their primaries, like the Hades lance turrets which help supplement the Macro batteries to still give versatility.

Terms Used

This section briefly covers the advanced weapon data you will find for each ship. These values are calculated based off the base weapons stats and are explained as follows:

DPS - Damage Per Second - The total damage output per weapon type (all guns combined) per second, assuming 100% of shots land, before considering armor penalties.

Crits Pm - Critical Hits Per Minute - Assuming all shots land, this will be the average number of critical hit's the guns will cause every minute before modifiers. (all guns combined)

Salvos PM - Salvos Per Minute - The total number of combined waves of fire, not including multiple rounds fired from the same weapon.

Rounds PM - The actual number of shots or individual projectiles fired each minute from all guns combined.

The choices for the Chaos Battle Cruisers are pretty straightforward. You have your Lance option, the Acheron, with your other two choices being split between Macro stacking and a combat carrier.

Thanks to the impressive arrays of weapons on the Chaos Battle Cruisers and the Acheron's addition of 4 turrets, 2 of them also lances, to the main four lance batteries, gives the Acheron a pretty high raw dps and crit chance for a lance cruiser. Given the Chaos' preference for longer range and the ability for the Acheron to put out high damage at range without needing lock on, this ship might be the more typical go to with the Hades macro BC being more special case.

The Hades is the cheapest Chaos Battle Cruiser with the full Macro package, giving it the highest potential on paper dps and crit chance. As a nice little bonus, the turrets are all lances, so you still have some supplemental armor piercing, 100% accuracy damage to soften distance falloff for your macros. The one downside is the prow mounted heavy lance ends up getting locked in to that typical 90 degree forward firing arc that keeps it from firing in unison with your batteries.

While Macros and closer range fighting aren't generally the Chaos' strong-suit, since the Battle Cruiser base stats give the Hades some toughness, combined with it's (relatively) low point cost, it may be worth taking one or two to serve as sacrificial front line fighters that keep your enemies attention off your longer range ships.

The Styx is a powerful Carrier that is a bit of a specialty for the Chaos fleet, considering it's comparison, the Imperial Navy, doesn't get 4 launch bays on a single ship until their expensive and limited Battleship class ships. While you are still paying a premium on the Styx's point cost, as far as quad launcher carriers go, the Styx has got to be one of the best values as far as cheapness/strength.

The main reason carriers with 4 launch bays are so significant, besides the ability to just launch stronger squadrons, is that those squadrons are more capable of punching through defenses on their own. If an enemy cruiser has enough turrets that it can shot down a wing of two bombers, you not only deal 0 damage but lose the squadron. If your squadron of 4 bombers attacks the same ship, it's likely to punch through with at least 50% health remaining, doing less damage, but still something, and more importantly returning to the carrier to return the launcher charge.

When you consider the increased chances of those squads getting back to your carrier, you realize how the increase in bays is a threefold bonus, giving more damage, more reliability and more longevity to their use.

As a little bonus, the extreme range of the offensive turrets means the Styx should have no problem contributing to the fight well out of return fire range.

A new Battle Cruiser for the Chaos Navy, released with the Chaos Campaign expansion, the Hecate drops two of the launch bays carried by the Styx to provide a more front line combat carrier type of vessel, with a much better DPS/CPM profile and a nice chunk of savings on points. The Hecate seems to be a alternative carrier for when you want to bring squads but still need the raw firepower to deal with any unexpected surprises that could end up running your squads dry or proving them to be ineffective, even in large numbers (ie: Necrons and their aoe fighter killing ability)
