William Wallace Campaign Walkthrough Guide - "Age of Empires II: Age of Kings"
This guide provides a walkthrough for the William Wallace campaign in Age of Empires II: Age of Kings. In total there are 7 missions in this campaign, however they are mostly short and simple, serving to provide more of a tutorial than an actual challenge. Because of the way the first campaign is structured, all seven missions have been condensed into one guide.

Note: There are no difficulty or speed options available for the missions in this campaign. Also, this guide was created using the Age of Empires II: HD version of the game.

A very simple mission, introducing basic movement, the fog of war and control commands. You'll be tasked with moving your lone warrior to each subsequent flag, eventually receiving a couple extra Militiamen and a Light Cavalry. Next up is crossing a small river to attack an outpost before reaching a small town which is given to you. Finally you're asked to defend the town from three enemy Militia that attack. They'll pretty much ignore your soldiers and go straight for the buildings, making it extra easy on you.
Easter Egg: If you use the cheats "Marco" and "Polo" to uncover the map, you'll find the letters "ES" drawn on the map near the right corner in an are you cannot normally access. The initials likely stand for the studio who developed AoE, Ensemble Studios.

Now the game will introduce you to the basics of the economy and collecting resources. Here you are asked to collect 50 wood, 50 Food and 50 Gold. Just start harvesting food with the single villager you start out with and after the first return trip to drop off it's resources, you'll be given an additional 4 villagers. Avoid building any yourself as it will only make the mission take longer. Move the villagers to the next resource you need after you gather 50 of one until the mission completes.
Remember, villagers start out being able to carry 10 of whatever resource they are gathering, so it only takes one full trip of all 5 settlers to grab you the resources you need from each source.

More training lessons, now the game works up to the basics of base construction along with troop recruitment. You start out with some villagers to collect resources with, which you can task on food while building a couple more at your Town Center. You'll be asked to build some Houses to increase your population limit, then a Barracks from where you'll train troops. Once the Barracks is done, queue up four Militia and the mission will be won once they're production is finished.
With the nice helping of resources you start the mission off with, there is little need for much resourcing of your own to complete the objectives.

Now things get a bit more advanced, covering some of the additional buildings you can create along with the process of researching technologies and aging up your civilization. You'll start out with a large town and several villagers, which you can use to collect food whilst building additional ones to speed up your economy. Avoid building extra Militia for now so you don't have to harvest gold later and wait for the cues to research things like Loom, which makes your villagers more resistant to damage and the Mill building which serves as a drop off point for food harvesting.
Once you've saved up enough food to do so, after taking part in some other small tasks at the game's request, you can begin the aging process from your Town Center by researching the Feudal age. Taking part in this expensive process is important in any game, as it serves to unlock entirely new tiers of units, buildings and upgrades for you to utilize.
While you are upgrading you'll be attacked by 3 enemy Militia from the right, which should be no challenge for your standing army of 8. Build a couple more after the fight, as you are asked to do, then go back to the Barracks after the aging process is finished to research the upgrade to turn Militia into Men-at-Arms. After the upgrade you'll be attacked one last time from the same direction, by two Militia and a Knight. If they manage to run past your army towards your villagers, click on the Ring Town Bell icon on the Town Center, to call your villagers into the building. Once inside, they'll be protected as long as the building stands, while also being able to fire arrows from the Town Center, a useful way to fend off attacking forces.
5. The Battle of SterlingClick thumbnail to view full-size
Objective: Defeat the English army and destroy their tower.
This is the first mission that has you building up a moderately sized base from the basics, with which to produce an army and attack an enemy outpost with. Take your time building up a decent economy, constructing houses, Mining Camps, Lumber Yards, a Dock and so forth, experimenting a bit if you'd like since you aren't any initial pressure to defend yourself. Your first objective will be constructing 5 Militia to use as a defensive force, however you can hold off on this if you'd like since the weak english attack doesn't come your way until you do so. Remember, even just your villagers garrisoned in your Town Center, are strong enough to defeat smaller groups of invading enemies.
There is only the single spawned attack of Militia to worry about in terms of your base's defense or securing resources you'd like to harvest, with the rest of the English and their tower behind some palisade walls to the west. They will stay inactive until the wall is destroyed, which is something you'll be warned of if you approach them.
The mission prompts tell you to bring at least 12 soldiers to the final conflict, but you should wait until you can age up, research Men-at-Arms, then build up a force of them along with Archers. A group of about 30 total soldiers should be sufficient to take on everything behind the walls.
6. Forge an Alliance
This is the first of the actually challenging missions, leaving the tutorial side of things in Age of Empires II, however still keeping the difficulty relatively easy to help smooth the way into the tougher missions in the later campaigns. Here you are tasked with building up your town, defending your ally Yellow, while fighting off and protecting them from the red enemies, the English.
The map is set up with a river that runs through the middle, dividing the land into north and south. In the south is the enemy english base which stretched between two access points that allow land units to cross the river. On the north side and to the east is your base, with yellow, your ally to the west.
Objective: Capture 3 relics and garrison them in your Monastery.
Relic #1 & Initial Base Building
The first relic is located just outside your Monastery in the town you start off with, so use a Monk to pick it up and move it into the building, which provides you with a steady stream of gold. You should work on your initial economy, harvesting mainly food to allow yourself to reach the Castle age. Use the Scout Cavalry you start out with to uncover the map, avoiding crossing the walkable paths that go over the river for now, since the English defenses on the other side can kill them if engaged. Don't worry too much about defense early on, as the AI is slow to get on the offensive.
You can also take one of your Monks and move them to your Ally's base to the west early to grab the second relic ahead of time if you'd like. It will be beneficial to research Cartography from the Market, and in any other mission with AI allies, since this allows you to share their vision.
Relic #2 and the Allied Celts
The second relic, as mentioned earlier, is found within the walls of the allied town that lies to the west, in it's upper right corner where a path leads up to some hills surrounded by trees. Retrieve it's relic as soon as you get the opportunity.
The English will begin to send attacking groups out around 9-10 minutes into the mission, so try to build a few extra soldiers with some upgrades if possible, to combine with your starting army. The AI seems to go after your ally first, which makes things easier on you, and you don't have to worry about rushing too quickly to their aid since the English will take forever to do any real damage to their town.
If your prompted to send your ally resources through tribute, feel free to ignore the request as it makes little impact on the outcome of the game. The AI doesn't seem to make much use of the resources given anyway.
Fighting the English and Relic #3
Once you've fended off the English attack on your ally, continue to pump out soldiers so you can start taking the fight to the enemy. If you push across the river and start to engage their gates that protect the base, you can pull out all of the defenders inside the walls which you can then engage. This will leave the walls defenseless, preventing you from having to deal with them as attackers at your own base later.
Once the walls are for the most part, free of enemy soldiers, work on breaking them open, which is best left to your Man-at-Arms (or upgraded Long Swordsmen) since they have a bonus versus buildings. Once you manage to break open the gates, stopping of course to fend off any new defenders that come to try to kill your soldiers, rush your troops in and start having them clear out the military production facilities and any remaining enemy soldiers. You'll need to bring one of your Monks to the center of the English base, where the relic stands on a hill and run him back to your monastery with the relic to complete this mission.
7. The Battle of Falkirk
The final mission in the William Wallace campaign of Age of Kings, The Battle of Falkirk has you occupying a large landmass that takes up the upper portion of the map with your enemy on a smaller stretch of land to the bottom left, accessible by a single water crossing to the west of your town. In this mission your tasked with both building your own Castle, while establishing an army strong enough to destroy the English's.
Objective: Build a Castle
When the mission starts, you'll notice you have a ring of outposts on the edges of the land mass your town occupies, along with a half built wall with some large gaps around the edge of the town. You should get to harvesting from the farms, stone, gold and trees that lie within the partial walls of your base while working on closing the gaps that exist in the wall. The right side may need a bit more wall than the left, stretching to the edge of the map.
The English will start to attack almost immediately, however they will be kept busy for a while, taking out your expendable Outposts around the edge of your land mass, before they attack your town itself. Avoid trying to defend them, instead using the time they buy you to strengthen the defense at your town itself.
Protip: Always remember when building walls that if you're going to use trees as part of the wall, make sure you don't later harvest from that same group of trees for lumber, unless your really careful about doing so. You may unintentionally break holes in your defensive line, allowing the enemy into your town to wreak havoc.
When you have the wall finished, you can add some gates to the wall itself to allow your units to pass through later in addition to Watch Towers just behind the wall to serve as defense. You'll use up some of your stone reserves you need for the Castle to do this, however there is plenty to harvest from within your walls to make up for this.
Protip #2: Gates will open automatically to allow your units to pass through when they get close. This can have the unintended effect of letting the enemy in, since hostile units can move through the gate if your own units are keeping it open. To prevent this, select the gate and toggle it to it's locked state to prevent it from opening until you come back to unlock it, when you are ready to move your units out.
Now it's time to save up resources to hit the Castle Age, unlocking the upgrades you'll need to destroy the English town and it's castle, along with unlocking the build option for your own. Try to put some resources into building a few military units here and there, particularly some Archers to defend from behind the walls. Melee units will come in handy when you need to run out to destroy a battering ram, which has a powerful attack VS buildings and is resistant to ranged attacks.
Hitting the Castle Age
Once you've aged up, you can start building the Castle you need for the objective, inside the walls of your base. Put the rest of your resources into teching up your military units at their respective production facilities while researching damage and armor upgrades for them at a Blacksmith. In addition, you'll need a Siege Workshop and a couple Battering Rams to deal with the enemy castle itself. Once your castle is finished, your ally yellow, arrives with a significant amount of reinforcements to supplement your army.
Objective: Destroy the English Castle
Take the forces you've built up to this point and combine them with the ones you get from your ally. You have two options here, you can either use the Transport Ships you receive to make a landing over water, skipping the wall and tower defenses of the English entirely. Your other option is to use your large army to just plow through the wall, handful of defending soldiers and pair of towers that defend the water crossing that connects the two land masses in this map. If your army is on the weaker side and without siege backup, it may be best to go for the water landing.
From here on out it's all about doing enough damage to the English town to prevent them from recovering, while carving a path of destruction to the Castle which sits on a hill in the center of the base. If you have a large force still left over, you can just swarm the Castle itself with little regard, or you can take the more careful route and send in a group of Battering Rams to lead the charge, taking the damage that would do more harm to your other units while being sufficient in a group of just 4, to bring the Castle down by themselves.
If for any reason, you lose too many units, just hold them outside the range of the Castle to keep wrecking the other buildings while you build more reinforcements to join the fight.
